The foundation stone of Matru Mandir was laid on 21 February 1971. We are also celebrating Mother Language Day today.
Auroville City of Dawn is an experimental urban area in Villuppuram district. A desert plateau of about 20 sq km, 10 km north of Pondicherry and 5 km from the coast.
It was designed in 1968 by architect Roger Anger, known as Mirra Alfassa Emene "The Mother" Amma or Matrumurti, in a different architectural style.
Commemorating Auroville Aurobindo (1872-1950), work on the Matrumandir, a golden spherical 'mother temple' next to the banyan tree at the center of the International, began very soon. The foundation stone was laid on 21st February 1971 on mother's birthday.
The entire area around the Matrimandir is called Shanti area. Inside the Matrimandir, a spiraling ramp leads up to an air-conditioned chamber of polished white marble referred to as "the place to find one's consciousness".
Everything in this town uses solar energy. There is rain water reuse.
Auroville is one of the last places on Earth to host a significant portion of the emerging Tropical Dry Evergreen (TDEF) forests.
Alfassa's first public message in 1965 stated:
Auroville aspires to be a universal city where people of all nations can live in peace and progressive harmony across all religions, all politics and all nationalities. Auroville's purpose was to realize human unity.
Alfassa hopes that this experimental "universal township" will contribute significantly to humanity's progress towards a better and more glorious future by bringing together people of goodwill and aspiration for a better world.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram is founded under the guidance of Mother in 1926.
.The Ashram consists of an interconnected block of houses, including those in which Sri Aurobindo and the Mother lived for most of their lives.
At its centre, in a tree-shaded courtyard, lies the Samadhi, a white marble shrine where their bodies are laid to rest.
Devotees sit here and pray.
Mobile phones are to be switched off before entering the Ashram.
Absolute silence to be maintained in order to support the meditating devotees.

It is the most important attraction of Pondicherry. The people from all over the world come to this beautiful divine place. In the center of building there is Samadhi of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother(formerly known as Mirra Alfassa) under shaded trees. The visitors come and sit quietly around Samadhi and meditate. A limited number of rooms are available in Ashram guest houses for short visits but most of the time they are fully booked. it is advisable to make reservations in advance. While the visitors can enter the main building freely during visitors hours, some sections require pass to enter. The Bureau Central Office, designed as an exhibition hall, also provides an introduction to the vision of Sri Aurobindo and The Mother and their method of spiritual practice , through permanent exhibits of photographs, captions, text, videos and books in different languages. Shoes, mobile and photography are not allowed inside. The visiting hours are from 6 AM to 12 noon and 4 PM to 6 PM daily. Visit for divine experience !!

One Divine place with ABSOLUTE SILENCE, I have seen so far, just the sound of nature around. Well managed for tourists, enforcing discipline (mobile to be switched off, not talk inside), a good place to sit and meditate.

The Ashram, according to Sri Aurobindo, "has been created with another object than that ordinarily common to such institutions, not for the renunciation of the world but as a centre and a field of practice for the evolution of another kind and form of life which would in the final end be moved by a higher spiritual consciousness and embody a greater life of the spirit.

There are very good Guest Houses provided by Asharm, affordable and neat. But booking has to be done well in advance and we have to be flexible for the availability of the rooms. There’s a common Dining hall nearby, where they provide food 3 times a day for a cost of just Rs. 50. The tickets can be collected from Bureau Central, if available.

Timings : 8–11:30 am and 2–6 pm
Location : Marine Street in White Town, near the Beach
Parking : In general parking in White Town, Pondicherry has its own challenges. Cars can be parked in the adjacent streets where allowed. Narrow streets, so be prepared for slow moving and close navigations. Better take an auto.

This is a peaceful place and a spiritual community. This ashram grew out of a small community of disciples. This ashram has a samadhi where all are allowed to walk around and take his blessings. From there there is an entrance to the main ashram where only people living are allowed and no tourist interference would disturb them. Photography is strictly prohibited in this ashram hence you will only find the photos of the entrance. There is a free chappal stand to keep your shoes safely as these places welcome thousands of people in a day. There is also a small library which is dedicated to the life of Sri Aurobindo 's life and his works. Right before the exit you will find a souvenir shop where one can buy all souvenirs made in the name of Sri Aurobindo as a memory. Must visit place by everyone.

Lovely place by the promenade beach, tranquility n serenity can be felt at this place it is sitting in total silence in between the chaos of this beautiful city. The entry is free to the ashram. Shoes are to be removed in opposite lane before entering. U can get good hotels in near by areas . In the very next lane of this ashram is manakula vinayangar temple . Mobiles need to be switched off before entry too. There is a library inside for you to buy books written by shri maa and shri aurobindo ji in different languages and some post cards too. Cash card both are accepted. If you are in pondicherry to feel the peace of this magical yogic place that has been brought to life by yog kriya of shri maa and shri aurobindo visit ashram n mediation near their samadhi for some time. Afternoon is good time to visit as people are less at that time. This place is better then auroville to understand shri maa’s vision.

This place is a must visit when you are in Puducherry. This place is located near Pondy beach and is a famous landmark in the city.

So, it won’t be difficult to find it. This place is a ashram established by Aurbindo Swami(the great Indian philosopher) and mataji. Both of them are resting in peace their. It is called samadhi sthal.

As soon as you enter the place you are enchanted by beautiful flowers all around. Neat and clean premise.and very disciplined.no one even talks there.complete silence. Then they have the place where you can sit for some time.meditate if you want.it’s an amazing experience. It will calm your mind.aroma is such.

Then they have nice library where you can buy books of Swami Aurbindo and Mataji at very reasonable rates. And believe me books are really worth reading. They also have music cds of lectures and meditation tracks etc. If you don’t visit this place.you don’t visit Puducherry. People of all religions and cast come there. So, what you can do is start your day in the ashram everyday till you are in Puducherry. Photography is not allowed. Crows are all around but don’t be afraid they are human friendly.:)

Inside there is one library and a gallery where you would get lot of books (avl in english, tamil, bengali) and pictures of Rishi Aurobindo, you can buy those if you are interested.
The Sea shore is near by the Ashram, i hope you would love to walk through. A must visit if you are in Pondy.
