Almost all the dishes were delicious. Well almost all. Those which were recommended by our cheerful waiter were all great. Special mention to the bhetki fish batter fry - awesome. It was oozing quality. Kata chorchori (for the uninitiated this is a mixed veg hochpoch dish mixed with bish bones - a true homely dish albeit a tad too rich than how this is cooked at home. But nevertheless very tasty).
The availability (and off course the taste and quality) of the tel ilish (again a quintessential bengali household preparation) just won us over. It was too good. The mutton curry again was perfect. Fully balanced (rich yet thin gravy)
All in all we had great food. It is not super cheap for a pice hotel. But at the same time at this day and age of content creators they are making some money out of the new found identity and outreach among the Gen-Z by serving food that can easily rival some of the best ‘bengali themed’ restaurant sans the their decor. But pice hotel is for such no non-sense minimalist experience. So all absolutely justified.
What we didn’t like were some of the fry items other than the fish batter fry off course. Our total bill was Rs 1700.

The service was fast and the waiters were extremely polite. The 15 mins waiting in the line was worth it.
Recommend dish: mutton curry and bhetki paturi

Tarun Niketan - A remembrance to the erstwhile Kolkata!

Wind the button backwards into a time when everything was pure, to a time when the roads of Kolkata had a colonial charm; the less than muddy roads imprinted with the footsteps of bullock carts, little remains of those bygone era still standing with all its might in this rapid age of modernism.

Hidden away from the plain sight, overlooking the hustle and bustle of the busy road lies this tiny eatery Hotel Tarun Niketan. Regarded as a 108 year old institution, Tarun Niketan proudly carries the tag of a PICE Hotel, a genre and selection deriving from the term 'Paisa'.

A place where everything was sold and priced against Paisa, the then most common and lowest accepted denomination of the erstwhile era. Walking into such a place where everything gets charged on an individual basis, be it the humble and earthy banana leaves, to the slice of lime wedges, the history and legend of Hotel Tarun Niketan still continues to perhaps elude thousands of eyes.

A simple and rustic sitting arrangement, the ambiance here is no-frill and serves as a nostalgia of the past. The black chalk boards penning down the daily menu, the variety of dishes here are endless, and although they keep on changing every day humbly keeps satisfying patrons day and night, month after month for more than a century.

From the decadent Aloo Posto to Maacher Dim'er Bora, ground vegetables like uchche, badhakopi, thor, enchor to the more eye-catching variety of fishes and finally ending with Ghorer Chicken Jhol and Mutton er Jhol, no meal here is complete without the house special Chutney and Papad.

Although with inflation and rising costs, the prices are no more in sync than they were in the past, what lies the same is its aura and humble beckoning to the general masses making this place stand proudly after all these years.

Great place to have some authentic Bengali food, these are the few spice hotel who survived. If u r bored to have Chinese, continental then try here, u feel homely food and for sure u enjoyed the meal. Also they have dry fish sometimes, and Saturday and Sunday Desi chicken curry.
Don't need to read all just go and enjoy the meal.

This classic old Pice Hotel near Kalighat Metro station is probably the best of its kind in Calcutta. Tried Doi Katla, Illish maach er matha diye kochu shaak, Aam er chaatni, Maach er dim er bora. For two persons the bill struck approx 500-550/- .
There is no thali system though.
Variety of fish on the menu is diverse.... And the food was wowly tasty !!!

Bengali Thali : Steamed Rice, Chicken Curry, Muri Ghonto (Bengali Fish Head and Rice Mishmash), Uche Alu Bhaja, Alu Makha, Moong Daal aar Aamer Chutney (₹160)

Hotel Tarun Niketan is a 106 year Pice Hotel which still serves food on Kolapata (Banana Leaves). This is a part of series on decades old pice hotels of Kolkata and they still serve freshly made food from catch of the day and usually serve at cheap prices as compared to any restaurant.

Simple Interiors, Wooden Marble Tables, Old Plastic Chairs, Hand written rate menu black board on wall with white chalk will give you an idea of the antiquity of the place, Home like food at very low prices and also they've a wide range of authentic bengali delicacies that will definitely tantalize one's taste buds.

Also, their dishes have “NO ONIONS” – every food item is made without onions and garlic apart from the Fish, Meat and Egg preparations.

Where : Hotel Tarun Niketan, 88/1B, Rash Behari Avenue, Near Lake Mall, Kalighat, Kolkata.

It's a old pice hotel serving Bengali food with basic hygiene and comfort. I find their fish items very good and fresh. However Mutton is just amazing. Last time I took their famous Bhetki Kata chochori and it was out of the world ❤

This is a very good place to eat bengali good. I tried rice, macher matha diye dal, macher dim bhaja, chitol mather muithya, mixed chutney. All the items were very tasty, even the last drop of gravy. This plate cost me Rs 470. There are lot of other items to order here. Please come early to avoid crowd. There is a nice sweet snack shop just beside it from where you can pack some food after eating at tarun niketan.

There are total 5 to 6 pice hotel in and around calcutta and the worst of food quality is at this hotel. Peple who buys daily vegetables meat and fish for their family they definitely have an idea of how it should be priced. Just for an example... For One pomphret they charge 300 where as at sidheswari poce hotel at Dharmatola(just beside Rani Rashmoni house) it is 200 and the price of a raw Pmophret from fish market cost around 80-90 rupees. In a nutshell i would never ever recommend to visit this low qaulity resturant at all. Instead, i can refer Sidheswari Pice hotel(dhormotola), Sadhin Bharat pice hotel(college street) and Jogonmata vojonaloy(koilash bose street, near vidyasagar collge). Never ever visit to Tarun niketan, the owners behave and are decoits.
