This is the house where Swami Vivekanand was born. The condition of this house was very bad before. In 2004, this building was restored by the government and developed into a museum including research centre, English learning centre, computer training centre, memorial shrine, yoga class, library, and a charitable dispensary.

I'll recommend to every visitor going there to keep some extra time and watch the 3D show on Swamiji. The duration of the show is around 30 minutes, but it will give us a good feel for sure.

🚫 Photography is prohibited inside.

Ticket price : 10/- (30/- if you want to watch 3D show)

Museum time: 9 am to 12 pm / 2 pm to 5 pm (Monday closed).

The birthplace and ancestral house of Swami Vivekananda. In this house Swami Vivekananda spent his childhood days when he was known as Narendranath Dutta. The most famous Shrine Hall of "Bireswar Shiva" is present inside the area only, where Swamiji's mother Bhubaneswari Devi used to worship and pray to Lord Shiva and as a blessing of Lord Shiva got Child Naren as his son. A most famous, historical and heritage house in the heart of Kolkata. The view of the house and the area is a majestic one. An auditorium is here where various spiritual lectures are being conducted. Classes on various spiritual literatures, cultures and different languages courses are also conducted here. It is a cultural centre with various activities. Wonderful Shrine Hall where daily morning and evening prayers are worshipped. A 3D show on the life of Swami Vivekananda is also shown here in the evenings. A perfect place for the character development and mind development for the youths. Thank You.

Its a devine place. I am no one to praise Swamiji.. He took Hinduism to the world stage. His devotion & dedication to his work is unparalleled.

This place is very calm & quite & very clean as well. They have a light & sound show on the 1st floor & a 3D movie on Swamiji. Though the meditation centre was closed due to covid restriction. This house was restored completely after several damages to the old structure.

swami Vivekananda was born on the 12th of January in the year 1863. His ancestral house is located in 105, Vivekananda Road, where he was born and brought up. The house hosts a wide range of stories that are told time and again of the various ingenuous activities of the man, himself.

Following Vivekananda’s father's death, the house was faced with a legal battle between his mother and aunt, concluding a few days prior to his death. Vivekananda won full legal rights over the property.

It was not until 1962, that the house – which was then in terrible state – was taken up by the organisation called Ramakrishna Mission and turned into a museum. Ramakrishna Mission follows the ideologies of the saint Ramakrishna Paramahansa, whose disciple was Vivekananda, himself.

Inaugurated by the then President of India, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the house currently is a museum, research centre, library, a memorial shrine, a language centre, a computer training centre and a charitable dispensary.

The House Where Swamiji Lived

Swami Vivekananda had an affluent lifestyle, with well-off parents. He grew up in a big house, the front gate leading up to a marble staircase. The walls along the staircase are adorned with portraits of the Swami, himself.

Different aspects of his life are preserved and arranged chronologically to give you a visual representation of his life right from his birth to adulthood. For instance, depicting the time of his birth, there is a clock that has been stopped at five minutes to seven beside his birthplace indicating the exact time when the world was truly blessed by his arrival.

There are clay models of Swamiji at various activities such as the time when he was so engrossed in meditation that he did not realise there was a snake around him or when he was lost in his studies. Original relics of his clothes, boxing gloves, horse riding stirrup, etc. depict Swamiji’s various hobbies in boxing, riding and fencing, among others

A must visit in Kolkata

The house is must visit place of all devotees who are attached to RKM and obviously for all other general people. It's situated on Bidhan Sarani. If you are going towards north from Esplanade via Central Avenue or C R Avenue, then from Vivekananda road crossing take right turn and again after going through Vivekanand road 500 mtrs max and then from Bidhan Sarani crossing left turn and go slightly forward, you will find Vivekanand ancestral house at left.

It's actually a museum and it was almost demolished condition. It was taken over by RKM at 1998 and renovated completely with the 19th century materials in collaboration with ASI.

If you go via personal car, you may park your car at two sides of Bidhan Sarani in front of the house.

RKM Swami Vivekananda's ancestral house cum museum is the ideal place to learn what is life and for what it is meant. It is the place where the new generations must have a visit. One will get detail information about Swami Vivekananda's birth, his work and his speech at Chicago, as, light-sound show and 3D movie is shown on behalf of the museum and no extra charge is required for this show. Though the house was not like what is right now, the house was completely destructed in coarse of time. It is due to the immense hard works of Ramakrishna Mission that made it possible to restore the house to it's present condition. Everyone should visit it as it a cultural heritage site in kolkata. I visited the place yesterday and I assure that RKM Swami Vivekananda ancestral house will conquer everyone's heart.

This is the birth place and ancestral house of Swami Vivekananda who was known as Narendranath Dutta before his initiation from Thakur Ramkrishna Paramhansadev. This place is a must visit for any Indian, because as we all know that each and every Indian, irrespective of caste creed and religion has deep love ❤ and respect 🙏 in their hearts for this affectionate and beloved son of mother India 🇮🇳. His holiness took birth on 12th January in 1863 in an upper middle class family of 'Kayastha ' caste. This liberal Hindu monk earned much prestige and pride for his motherland. Thinking about the great job he had done in his short span of life that we still get astonished. His movement to promote Vedanta philosophy in the western world is well known to everyone. Social reform was in his heart, he spread a strong message to the youths of India to build a powerful and enlightened nation. Worldwide, highly regarded Ramkrishna Mission founded by Vivekananda have been working consistently as per his direction and wishes. Sadly, India lost her one of most prominent and popular son in 1902 too early 😢 😞
