My most favorite place during my school days. I got interested in reading electronics from here only. The thirst made me to study electronics engineering at PEC later days. Lot of old collections of books for all ages is available here. Great library!!!

Famous, main & old library in Pondy. Currently construction going on. Members can only return their books Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm. It will be fully functional from January 2018 but not sure. Don't miss the nice wall paintings around library Children's wing.

Nearly 177 years old, it comprises almost 335,000 books of all genres set against the timeless walls of the library.

It has an extensive collection of manuscripts, French and Portuguese books, Hindi and Tamil literature, and English literature. If you are a bibliophile, it boasts of a treasure trove of reading material that can take years to complete. However, with a detailed history, the library helps scores of individuals to research their subjects and spend some quiet time reading.

The library also has a good collection of over 8000 e-books, and several rare books get micro-filmed frequently to preserve them.

#Trivia: In the birth centenary of the notable French scholar, Romain Rolland, the library was renamed after him in 1966. He was a close compadré of Mahatma Gandhi.

Location of the library
The library is close to Raj Niwas on Ananda Rangapillai Street or White Street. It is surrounded by different eating joints and gorgeous palm trees too.

After visiting the library, you can see a few places nearby, such as the Mahakavi Subramania Bharathi statue, old bandstand, Jawaharlal Nehru street, the Promenade beach, and much more

Awaiting egarly to open the library. Security told me that it will take one to two month to open. Only newspaper reading is available nowadays.

If you love reading books then this is gonna to be your favourite place in Pondicherry. You can visit there in daytime before 8pm and can enjoy books... you will find different types of books in different languages and the most amazing thing is entry is free of cost.

It is one of the oldest libraries in India; they have an amazing collection of about 15000 old and rare books. It's fascinating to find such unknown classics.

Good place to read books , comfortable and silence...ground floor for tamil readers and first floor for English Hindi and french readers....u can see the direction while going on the entrance..at the top..👍

I have seen a comment that girls are not allowed in the reading room. It is not so. I am a regular visitor. There is a table in the reading hall allotted for women. But yes there are around 5 tables for men.

The literary hub of Pondicherry has open its gates after a long hiatus! The enthusiasm of locals is quite noticable as they queued up at the librarians desk to take home their favourite books within a day of reopening ! Was myself quite happy to see some brand new english novels by some of the favorite novelist such as Ken Follet, Dan Brown, PG Wodehouse to name a few.Go on then grab ur favourite authors before someone borrows it!

It is oldest and biggest library in Puducherry.Children's wing Roman Roland library. It's great place during my childhood. I spent most of time here.

The Romain Rolland Library, earlier known as ‘Bibliotheque Publique’, is one of the oldest Libraries in the country and the biggest in the Union Territory. In the year 1966 when the birth centenary of the Great French Scholar, Romain Rolland who was also a contemporary and a close friend of Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated, the Library was renamed after him and ever since it is known as ‘Romain Rolland Library’.

In adequate seats for readers. A list of magazines being purchased has to be placed in the notice board, since many magazines are not available for readers.

Best library in Pondicherry. Very old. You get almost all books you need.
