Shri Vedapuriswarar Temple

Beautiful Shiva temple with a large tank inside located on a busy street.

The Vedapuriswarar temple is the other major Shiva temple in Pondicherry other than the Kalatheeswarar temple on Mission street. Architecture is similar based on Chola traditions.

The temple has a tank inside and it’s quite a serene place to just sit and be in silence.

A must visit temple is you’re in Pondicherry.

The most devine place with southern mandir architecture. Has elaborated gopurams and ample space. The deity is gorgeous. It is a shiva temple having navagraha, ganapati, devi parvati and many more god's under one roof. Must visit if you are in Puducherry.

Serene temple in the heritage town with Shiva worshipped as Vedapureeswarar and Parvathi as Tiripurasundari. Dewan Kandappa Mudaliar expanded the temple with the help of public contributions in 1788 after the temple was demolished by French troops in 1748. Beautiful pushkarni in the back with cows adds to the tranquility.

One of the famous temple in pondicherry , tourist place. It is a Sivan temple. Normally it will crowd on Thursday. Peace and calm place. You visit this temple on shivrathri there will be a special pooja happening here.

Very old sivan temple.all pooja are done well. Early morning Visvarupa dhrsan is good. Old library is there we can read old books and daily news 🗞.

The destruction was recorded in details by Ananda Ranga Pillai in his diary ~

“Sunday, September 8th, 1748 - the priests of St. Paul's Church have been trying in vain for last fifty years to pull down the Vedapuri Iswaran temple…Finally on this fateful day French priests with diggers, masons, coolies and others, 200 in all, with spades, pick-axes began to pull down the southern wall of the Vedapuri Iswaran temple and the out-houses. Soon the Arthamandapam and Mahamandapam were also destroyed.

Father Coeurdoux, the Superior of St. Paul's Church,…entered the sanctum and kicked the lingam, and with a great hammer broke it; then ordered the Europeans to break the images of Vishnu and the other gods...”

Vedapuri Iswaran temple was later re-built at a different location by Dewan Kandappa Mudaliar, with the help of public donations, in 1788.

Big shiva temple, clean and good looking, one of the top 5 temples of Pondicherry, big pond at the back side. Good place for hindu religious people.

This temple is beside varadharaja perumal temple. This temple is dedicated to lord Shiva and Tripurasundari. If you have enough time then you can visit these two famous temples.

You won't find this temple of pondy in most of the youtubers channel. But this temple is beautiful. Must visit place

Shiva temple is one of the oldest in pondicherry. Lord Shiva gives you peace. Tirupoorasundari amma gives you patience. Her mookuthi glows allows you to understand the spritual inner you.

Murugan in Aandi kolam and Mana kolam. Vinayagar also there.

Multi shiva idols inside the temple. Thurgai is there.

One big kulam is there with lot of fishes. Once Lakshmi elephant use to take bath there.

Varadaraja Perumal temple (also called Vedapureswarar - Varadharajar Temple) in the South Indian union territory of Puducherry, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu.

It is located heritage town region of the city. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is a storehouse of Chola architecture.

A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all its shrines.

The temple has a five-tiered rajagopuram, the temple's gateway tower.

The temple is originally believed to have been built by the Cholas during the 11th century, with later expansion from the Pandyas.

The temple follows Vaikasana Agama tradition of worship.

Four daily rituals and three yearly festivals are held at the temple, of which the ten-day annual Brahmostavam during the Tamil month of Chittirai (April - May) and five-day Pavitrotsavam during Avani(August - September) and 25-day Ramar festival during chittirai being the most prominent.

The temple is maintained and administered by the Archaeological Survey of India as a protected monument.

One of the best and oldest Shiva temples in Puducherry. Three side entrances are there. The place is neatly maintained and queue management is very well followed to the maximum. There is a separate goshala with a set of native breeds beside the pond which has more fishes. We can feed puffed rice.

It's the best and old temple in the locality. The paintings on the ceilings (recently done) deserves a special mention. The premises is well maintained. Better for visit in early mornings and late evenings as floor gets hotter during morning and afternoon sun.
