Exquisite architecture.

In the memory of Tipu Sultan, this mosque was built by his youngest son, Prince Golam Mohammad Shah in 1842. Tipu aka 'Tiger of Mysore' never came to Calcutta. Thousands of devotees (both men and women) can perform Namaz here. Non-Muslims can enter here after covering their heads. It has been declared as a grade-I heritage building.

Tipu Sultan Masjid Located at 185 Dharamtalla Street, the mosque is a relic of architectural and cultural heritage. Tipu Sultan (20 November 1750 – 4 May 1799) was the ruler of Mysore and well known as a scholar and poet. Tipu Sultan Mosque was built here in Calcutta (now Kolkata) by his 11th son Prince Gholam Mohammed. He was the ruler of Mysore but why his youngest son built this mosque in memory of his father, far away from Mysore here in Calcutta. There is a history behind this.

I had the opportunity to visit the Tipu Sultan Masjid Kolkata on a weekday afternoon and I was awestruck by its beauty and history. The mosque is named after Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore, who fought bravely against the British. The mosque was built in 1842 by his youngest son, Prince Ghulam Mohammed, who was exiled to Kolkata by the British.

The mosque is located at Dharamtalla Street, a busy area in the heart of the city. The mosque stands out with its exquisite architecture and intricate carvings. The mosque has a brick-red structure with four minarets and 16 domes. The main entrance has a large arch with a colorful stained glass window. The mosque can accommodate up to 1000 people and has separate prayer halls for men and women.

The mosque is a place of worship and peace, where people of all faiths are welcome. The mosque also hosts various social and cultural events, such as seminars, lectures, and festivals. The mosque is a symbol of the legacy of Tipu Sultan and his family, and their contribution to the Indian freedom struggle.

The Tipu Sultan Masjid Kolkata is a must-visit for anyone who wants to experience the rich heritage and culture of Kolkata. It is a magnificent example of Islamic architecture and art, and it is a testament to the spirit and courage of Tipu Sultan and his descendants.
