A quaint colonial structure that has stood the test of time, Raj Nivas is the place of work and residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. A quintessential feather on this union territories' hat, Raj Nivas speaks of an era gone by and a period standing strong today. It is one of the top tourist attractions of Puducherry.

The foundation stone of this stunning structure was laid in 1738, under the then French Governor of Pondicherry, Pierre Benoît Dumas. Raj Nivas was finally completed at the arrival of Joseph François Dupleix, the Governor-General of French India.

French Colonial Styled Beautiful Mansion with sprawling lawns presently Housing LG of Puducherry

The new House of the Governor was built on the former site of the Hotel de la Compaigne which was the origin of the present Raj Nivas. Initially, the Governor's House was built in the French Baroque style but it was destroyed in the year 1761 by the British. Later, the building was rebuilt in the Rococo style from 1766 onwards. The Raj Nivas was a rectangular, single storied structure running east to west with porticoes on either side of the flanked by two other rectangular wings on the east and west. It was later converted into a double storied House.

governor house, not allowed for common people

I was not able to go inside since the building was closed due to national mourning. From outside it looked grand.

Must see on the evening of 26th of January. Superb..
