We recently stayed at Stepping Stones (Stablemans Cottage) and I can honestly say it was an amazing place to base ourselves. We were a party of 5 adults and the accommodation was perfect allowing for 2 good size double rooms for my friends and an ample sized single for myself. All rooms look out to the river and the surrounding fells. Having arrived late at night I was greeted with a spectacular view and sunrise over The distant fell, with a tinge of mist to set the scene (as per pictures). The hosts were very helpful and although I did not meet them face to face, they provided excellent service via emails to ensure we were happy and had everything we needed. Ambleside is a 30m walk along the river and the check out the Badgers at the badger bar (Glen Rothay hotel) just 10 minutes walk up the road. There are great walks on the doorstep and we explored Rydal water and caves en route to grasmere (about 1hour walk from the cottage). All in all we had an amazing time and the accommodation was perfect ( word of warning to tall people, there are some low ceilings and beams to be aware of as the bedrooms are in a rod annex. One of our party was 6”7 and had a few knocks!!

Nice walk along the river with beautiful scenery. Unfortunately, mid July 2023 was quite rainy putting stones way under the water

Lovely Easter Break.Further from the wedding crowd of Ambleside with quick access to the falls. We stayed in the Garden Cottage with our 57kg dog, and although it was small, we fitted in perfectly. We loved sitting in the garden with a beer watching the light change at the end of a day's walk.

It is just 20 mins walk from Rydal Cave. Lovely to go and see if you can. It is surrounded by beautiful scenes around that.

Google maps show it in the wrong place, the difference is 0.7mile. I was trying to find it yesterday but after walking to the place shown on map, I thought that maybe water was to high. Today I was coming back from the other direction and there it was. I literally stood by the stones and asked google maps for directions it said I have 0.7 miles to go.

Kids loved the challenge of race over the steps !! Great fun for all.

Definitely worth a quick visit to prove that you can do it ;-)

I have came across it many times on my walks around Ambleside and Rydal! The stones can be more or less visible depending on the day and weather circumstances.Beautiful!

I went there very early one morning on our holiday. It was a beautiful sunny morning, I must admit I was a little scared crossing the river on my own and was worried I would slip and fall in with my camera, but I made it and was then able to go for a walk in the beautiful countryside and enjoy the peace and quiet of the early morning with just some sheep in the fields as company. A beautiful place!

First time the stones weren't underwater, I had to take the opportunity to cross a wonderful experience

Beautiful house packed with everything you could need. The stepping stones just over the road are a great place to explore but ensure you get there early, as we often watched a queue build during more active times. That can really put you under pressure crossing the slick stones.

We had a fantastic weekend at Stablemans. Beautifully presented accommodation in an idyllic setting, walking distance to Ambleside and Grasmere. It's tranquil and stunningly pretty, with great walks all around, which makes it Lakes-perfect.

Our first wedding anniversary. We had a lovely time despite the rain which was quite spectacular on the stepping stones. We will be back but may not wait for our next anniversary we want to cross the stones.
