Historic Kitchen Hut

Awesome hut/shelter to visit, on a bad day you can really see why it’s necessary and provides a great stopover whether you’re doing the overland track, a circuit or heading up to the summit.

It’s basic inside but very historic! Very different to other huts/shelters I’ve been to in NZ. There are no amenities other than long drop toilets as it’s an emergency shelter. As in no water, cooking area as such, beds etc.

Gorgeous little hut just befor the summit climb starts on overland Track is not to be slept in unless in emergency is very unusual due to its double floor design. Amazing views from it. The track from Marion’s lookout to the hut is super easy. Pretty much a boardwalk the whole time. I recommend to go to the summit if weather is fine and you are ready for the rock climbing.

Nice hike to this point and a good rest stop before tackling the summit. The summit track from this point is very rocky, wet (or snowy even!) And steep!! Definitely worth coming this far though even if you don't want to make the summit.

Good to leave the packs for Cradle Summit

Good landmark to reach if planning to do day walk in winter starting from dove lake, cradle mountain.

Amazing walk. Carried my four year old on my shoulders for most of it. There are only three varieties of snake up here. We had two of them cross our path directly in front of us, awesome!

What a life saviour for us! We arrived Tasmania with a 30 degrees welcome, and immediately hit by the snow, sleet, hail, rain 12 hours later! Thanks to the much needed shelter at Kitchen Hut! Can you imagine 15 people trying to squash into this tiny hut?

Apart from the hut, for those completing the Overland Track, this is where things start to get interesting. Often cloud covered and misty, this first part of the track can be absolutely surreal. All part of the magic.

Scenic hut at the base of Cradle mountain, and a good shelter from the wind. Don't be deceived by the name, there is no food or kitchen apparatus there. It's an Emergency shelter. If you are walking this way, you will stop here.

Fantastic to see. Just at base of the mountain. We were lucky beautiful summers day.
