While visiting from Tassie I called in for a Saturday morning session at Sydney West Martial Arts.
Luke and his team were incredibly friendly and helpful throughout the training session.
A great facility and the absolute gold standard for no gi grappling in Australia.
Highly recommend!

One of the best gyms in Australia! Everyone is super welcoming and friendly. From the very first day I came to train I knew that this gym was different. The coach Luke Martin is great at breaking down techniques and explaining them in a very technical but easy to understand way. One of the best coaches in the business. Great facilities and great people. Whatever your experience level I would highly recommend Sydney West Martial Arts.

I have had nothing but amazing things to say about this place.
I have been here roughly 4 months now and have loved every minute.

Joining any gym can be daunting, especially a martial arts gym (with no prior training) but I couldn’t have felt more welcome from the first day. Not only the coaching staff but the other students as well.

The coaches Luke, Brad and Dave are all exactly what you want from coaches. Their ability to break down technique and explain things to people of all levels are second to none.

Clean, friendly environment suited to everyone from beginners all the way up to the highest level. Their results at competitions speak for themselves. I would recommend this place to anyone.

Sydney west martial arts has something for everyone. If you want to win competitions, this is the place for you & if you're hobbiest looking to get better, this is also the place for you.

Luke, David & Brad are all amazing coaches who are dedicated to learning and teaching the highest quality of Jiu Jitsu possible.

The facilites are top class and the overall culture of the place is something that all other gyms should strive for.

Best grappling gym in Oceania, with two huge matted areas and a sauna. Decent sized change rooms with a heap of showers available, along with ample parking out the back any time of day or night. Schedule is loaded with options to cater to your life/work situation, and regardless of your level you will improve quickly in this training room.

SWMA and all the coaching staff are phenomenal. This was my first introduction to full time NoGi and it has been very enjoyable.
Everyone is happy to help out and offer advice.
Luke, the head coach, was awesome in welcoming me to the gym.

The best place for Nogi Submission grappling in NSW.. you're more likely to win a billion dollars than not get better at Jiujitsu training with Luke.

Great class structure and options. I would strongly encourage people to give this gym a try if you wish to start your bjj journey, or if you wish to improve bjj game overall. Swma is a wonderful community that will benefit anyone that joins it. Take from it me, as me and Luke have our differences and don't get on.

I’ve known Luke Martin since 2005 and he has been on a mission to find and teach the absolute best Jiu Jitsu. I’m a high level black belt competitor. I live and train in America with multiple world champions. But whenever I’m back in Australia, Luke Martin at Sydney West Martial Arts is my absolute go to for training and coaching. SWMA has the most successful competition team in Australia. I know plenty of people that regularly travel an hour or more to train there. There’s really no other choice if you live anywhere near Sydney.

Luke is one of the best coaches in Australia. Highly recommended if you want to take your no-gi Grappling to the next level.
Just make sure you don’t wear shoes on the mat 🙃

Went along for a drop in one night a while back and was greeted by all of the great and friendly staff. The level of teaching is second to none. Luke and his team are changing the game immensely for the entire country. The post class Q&A was like watching an instructional in person especially since Jeremy Skinner and Josh Saunders were in the final prep for ADCC. If you want to train with the best no-gi team I highly recommend making this place your home or hell even your second home if you still want to stick with your OG team.

At Sydney West Martial Arts I trained,
Where the mats and the people maintained,

A friendly and supportive vibe,
And a spirit that helped me survive.

Although I was submitted with grace,
Leg locks put me in a tight space,

But still I left with a smile,
And a heart filled with gratitude the while.

For the experience was so rich,
And the training was worth every stitch,

Of sweat that I poured on the floor,
And the knowledge I gained in this sport more.

So I'll go back to Sydney West,
With a hunger to give it my best,

And to learn and to grow and to win,
And to bask in the jiu jitsu kin.

High level gym at all belt levels.

All the Instructors credentials on and off the mats speak for themselves.
Head instructor spends countless amounts of time and money in sharpening his own skills, domestic and abroad, to then pass down to his students.

If you want to be a competitive killer on the mats or are just looking to level up your skills as a hobbyist, SWMA is the place to be in Sydney.

Anyone who says otherwise is a simp

I don’t know where to start with all the good things about this place.

First, I’ll start with Luke. His knowledge and experience is what initially attracted me to SWMA. I was at a local jujitsu competition where I first witnessed him coaching his students and was immediately impressed by his ability to calmly walk all his students through their numerous victories while seeing all the other coaches yelling and beating on the mats. Luke is extremely talented and so very very experienced. Luke was really welcoming when I decided to come to class and I enjoy the way he runs his sessions. Something I was looking for when coming to SWMA was consistency in not only teaching but teaching style day to day. Luke and others definitely deliver that here.

Secondly, the culture. The culture here is unmatched and you’ll find some great banter along the way. You’ll find all sorts of people here from hobbyists to serious competitors but everyone trains hard and we all hold each other accountable. Every class is packed full of knowledge and I personally believe you learn so much quicker here. I’ve found that everyone is so knowledgeable and really technical which will get you so far. Class is definitely a pick me up each day. As a female in jujitsu it’s no secret that we are outnumbered by the boys but I feel so extremely comfortable here. Everyone rolls with everyone and it gives you so much opportunity to excel exponentially. I enjoy all the people I see day to day and look forward to training here for years to come.

Finally, the cleanliness! This gym is so clean! Which isn’t
Something most people have at the front of their mind when considering gyms but when you are rolling your face and body all around you want to ensure cleanliness to protect your health.

Sydney West Martial Arts is one of the best grappling schools in Australia. They have professional instructors who have proven their creditability over the years on the competition mats themselves and producing multiple Jiu Jitsu champions of all ages. 10/10

If someone writes a negative review about this sanctuary of leg and wrist locks, know this, they are a complete idiot. The high priest of this sanctuary, Luke, is a gentleman and a scholar. Look no further than Sydney West, it wont get any better than them.
PS do not roll with Josh, dudes really really really big and strong.

It doesn't get better than this gym.
From the day i stepped in SWMA I've felt nothing but welcomed, supported and exhausted. The community of students is second to none and the training is world class.
From a coaching perspective Luke is as good as it gets, supportive and constructively critical when needed.
You will be forced to grow here, and will love every minute doing so.

Been about 5 years since I started my BJJ journey here. Had to move to another location cause of work but loved every moment training here. Always felt so welcome even as a complete beginner, Luke was a great teacher. Would recommend anyone thinking about getting into BJJ or any martial arts in the region.
