Glebe Park

In the 1960s, when I was at Civic and I had missed the bus, I walked to the woodlands on a muddy track, before a park was proclaimed, was a short cut to my suburb, this is my first introduction before it became as a park in Civic. Years later,when the park opened, my family walked with me in the park.

Glebe Park is a public park at Civic Eastern side of Canberra Centre.

The Glebe House 🏠 was built in 1871-3, which was a two storey house 🏠 with a single storey verandah made of bricks from nearby swampland clay 😳.
It was a Rector house for Reverend Pierce Galliard Smith (27 October 1826 to 18 November 1908) and other Reverends from 1873 to 1926.

Later, it became the Canberra Girls 👧 Grammar school until 1928.

Then Glebe house served as a guest house 🏠 for 25 years.
By 1954, Glebe House was in a poor state of repair, and the building was sold😢.
In the middle of the 20th century, it was demolished.
A plaque was erected ten years later in Ballumbir Street, Reid, just to the south of St Peter's Lutheran Church, to make the site of the former building

Community campaigns to save the trees 🌳 😊, as well known that Reverend Pierce Galliard Smith planting trees all over his 2330 square kilometres Parish, before coming the Capital of Australia, the English Elms (Ulmus Procera) and English Oaks (Quercus Robur), resulted in a park being proclaimed in 1983.

They landscaped with gates that are named after historic people or places on the ten gates 🤔, fences, paths, a Rotunda, and a playground that completed in 1989.

There is an exercise 💪 place in the park.

In 2002, they unveiled a statue off Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 - 30 January 1948).

In recent years, there have been outdoors Arts 🎨 exhibitions been staged in Glebe Park during the Canberra Festival.
2017 saw the Canberra Christmas 🎄 😍 come to the Glebe Park and on Mother 👩 day 😀.

It is a well maintained park with lots of seating.beautiful trees.a great place to relax in the city

This is a beautiful and well maintained park. It is especially nice in autumn when the leaves change colour and fall from the trees.
The grass always appears to be green and well maintained and there are a great variety of flowering shrubs. The park rangers that look after this park do a great job!

The park is always open and has public toilets that are (most of the time) decently clean.
There are a few free use barbecue areas scattered around the park with ample seating and tables.
There are also two playgrounds that have been well constructed and are suitable for most children. One of them was built only in the last few years.
There is also a stage at the south end of the park for live performances.
I haven't seen it used before but hopefully now that covid restrictions have eased we will see some live music there.
Go sit somewhere in this park and enjoy the serenity!

Really enjoy coming here with my dog. Some nice walking tracks and a really cool barbecue facility. Lots of nice trees and a great place to unwind.

Lovely tranquil park to grab some quiet moments. Very shady during the summer months. It has public toilets, drinking fountain and a rotunda for smaller events.

Beautiful trees, green grass, playground, brick paths. A great place to spend some time with kids or relax in the shade with a book.
