National portrait gallery has a large range of portrait on exhibition, both more traditional depiction (oil, bronze) as well as an expanded portrait in more abstract display. As an abstract artist I thought the works may not resonate but was delightfully surprised. Staff were very friendly (including security). Bring your own water - $7 from the cafe!

Unique experience with so many artists and different visions! NPG is definitely a place that everyone has to visit and get into artists' lives and style.

We visited this gallery and were initially worried that it would not be so interesting, since all art works are portraits. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the variety of art, ranging from paintings and photographs to sculptures. They have some very interesting art works here and it was well worth our visit. They also have a shop and cafe here.

Visited last Sunday, 6/8/2023. It was a very vibrant place where people were involved in grass weaving workshops and children were enjoying entertainment whilst encouraged to be artistic. The portraits were a trip through the history of our people. The Monash gaze, the playful eccentricity of Charles Blackman, a serene Aboriginal female artist, and the elegance of hat wearing ladies from a bygone era were samples of memories I left with. The architecture of this gallery is stunning. Entry was free but I couldn’t resist spending money in the bookshop.

A good amount of portraits including Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. A ton of history.

Artistic beauty in paint, pastel, photo bronze etc etc.
A sight of our past and present iconic people through the ages of our great nation. Couldn't get past the beautiful bronze sculptures especially of truganini and her husband.
A must see gallery.

We went to visit with our grandchildren as we were picking up a book from the shop. Thought we would only be there for 5 minutes but there was a craft activity for kids that involved them making decorations - kept them occupied for an hour. We had to supervise and the staff were so helpful. At other times there are specific kids programs. Well worth a visit.

Great collection of art and amazing works to look into. Such a warm welcome at the entrance as well. There is also a little art shop and a nice cosy cafe in the gallery which makes the experience more enjoyable.

Very inclusive and modern gallery that will appeal to everyone. Book online (tickets are free but best to make sure there is availability) to avoid disappointment. There is underground parking (think it is free on weekends? But $3 per hour normally). Galleries will take approx 2 hours to tour. They had the "pop rock" exhibition in Feb-21 and they brought back great memories growing up in Australia in the 80's and 90's, very powerful and nostalgic.

Had a great time here. The staff were very nice and inviting. Nancy was amazing, giving me a rundown of the place, as I had just missed the tour. Galleries were great as well.

Outstanding gallery in a building of significant architectural quality. The gallery is striking in its use of light and space, with a wonderful combination of large and small spaces that draw you deeper in to the building.
The portraits are excellent both in their variety and the curation- with an emphasis on the people in the pictures. This is really a picture of Australia through the personalities that created the nation - arts, indigenous, investment, education, science and culture. A must see for any visit to Canberra.

Outstanding museum showcasing exceptional portrait collection both historical and modern.
The extensive selection of photos and paintings by Australian and International Artists were truly a great joy to see.
The museum is mostly free except for the featured collections. It's only a few minutes walk from the National Gallery and the National Library. It features a nice cafe for you to sit and enjoy a cup.

This is a crazy, quiet, gem of a place in Canberra. I love the collection of works. They encompass a thriving range of Australian creatives. My favorite: Yellow Portrait by Lina Bryans, oh, and Girl by Charles Blackman, it's his wife, Barbara, who eventually became blind. Wonderful stories in this place. From my last visit: I cried listening to Paul Kelly’s “How to Make Gravy” at this gallery. Pop in now to see a delightful mix of portraits, in various media, Lee Lin Chin in photo realism, or Nell Schofield in absolutely stunning watercolours, and bask in our rich stories. Love it that the gallery reflects many women as well as male artists. it’s always worth a look in.

We love the NPG. The cafe is very good, with a spacious outdoor area. The collection is always worth a browse. And the shop has an excellent stock of books, gifts, cards etc.

Fabulous experience .
Under parking is bit expensive. Free entry to main gallery, but paid for special exhibitions. Great cafe and gift shop. Walking distance to national gallery.
