I’ve stayed at the Burrow twice now, and hope I can visit again.

Both times I came to The Burrow for week-long visits as a writer's retreat. It surpassed all expectations! I am an academic and a mum and having the time and space away to myself to focus was invaluable. The bush wetland setting is unbeatable for restoration and the creative space to getting serious writing work done. Sue and Bill are incredible hosts and adding the meals option is a must for all writers (it not only gives you the time to work and be looked after, but Sue's cooking is delicious).

The first week that I stayed I got so much writing done, about a third of the book I was working on! I l couldn’t wait to come back, and when I did (to edit the same book) I managed once again to meet all of my writing and editing goals.

It’s such a beautiful peaceful setting (I’ve included both foggy and daytime winter pictures to show the view from the writer’s desk), what every writer needs.

I stayed at The Burrow for 3 wonderful nights and I cannot recommend it enough, it was pure magic. Sue and Bill are incredibly generous, attentive and super warm hosts and have built a very special place where you can retreat and recharge in nature. The cabin is very comfortable, the breakfast was superb and the billabong and gardens are so beautiful. I came to do some writing and found deep rest and relaxation. The cherry on top is of course, Angus! their gorgeous and sweet Airdale terrier dog who was the best writing company I could have asked for.I will always cherish the memories of The Burrow, especially the chats with Sue and Bill , watching political debates with Angus and seeing the moon rise over the billabong. If you're looking for a place to slow down and unwind or need to do some focused work this is the place to go, I cannot wait to go back.

A magical hideaway, no wonder the wombats love this place! Sue and Bill were gracious and charming hosts with a passion for nature and a true delight. Lovely B&B, most definitely recommend this for creatives and nature lovers.

Oh my - what a glorious stay I had at The Burrow over end of Jan/start of Feb this year (2024). I was incredibly fortunate to tuck myself away for five days to write in this beautiful bush setting. So serene and peaceful. While I got heaps of writing done, I also felt that I was able to reenergise and rejuvenate, which was a complete treat. Deep sleep, nourishing food, and incredible natural surrounds absolutely did the trick!
The real joy, however, was Sue and Bill. They are just such wonderful humans and were generous hosts. I really treasured the snatches of time each day when we crossed paths and valued our conversations together. I have been so very lucky to go to wonderful places and undertake 'writing retreats'. They have all been wonderful, but my time at Wombat Bend was particularly special and one that I cannot recommend highly enough.

The Burrow is the most perfect place for a writing retreat. Sue and Bill have created something truly magical at Wombat Bend. It is so comfortable and well equipped with fresh food and everything you need to burrow away and write, relax and rejuvenate. I loved meandering around the billabong in my breaks, having the birds watch me write through the window, and having Angus the Airedale swing by to make sure I was still working! This place is absolute perfection, and I can’t wait to return for my next retreat.

My partner and I had a wonderful time at Wombat Bend. We flew from New York to the Yarra Valley for a wedding and stayed a few extra days to experience the nature before venturing to other parts of Victoria. While we slept off the jet lag on our first day, Sue and Bill were kind enough to drop off a hot meal for us to wake up to.

The accommodation itself is very comfortable and had pretty much anything we could ask for. The website doesn’t do the bathroom justice - it’s got a luxurious glass walled shower, great water pressure, and tall ceilings with high windows and natural light. The location had great access to wineries as well as Healesville and the Black Spur Drive. It was incredible to look out on the beautiful billabong in the morning and hear all the different birds, like in the attached video. We spotted a wombat and some kangaroos nearby as well.

Sue reached out before our stay and asked if we’d be interested in a rare opportunity to go spotlighting for nocturnal gliders with a wildlife expert and it was the highlight of our entire trip. Sue and Bill were eager to suggest other ideas for our trip as well based on our interests. We had a great time at Wombat Bend and would definitely go back!

We loved our four nights with Sue & Bill at The Burrows at Wombat Bend. Delightfully unique, supremely comfortable in a beautiful setting surrounded by wildlife, cared for and loved by the owners who created this paradise from a blank page they started in 1978.

We enjoyed our stay so much we extended it. The Burrow at Wombat Bend delivers a beautiful environment for those loving peacefulness, beauty and diverse Australian Nature and wildlife - especially birds. And I saw my first ever wombat! The mudbrick cottage is very comfortable, and full of fascinating items - though the best part is the view - or rather various views through the different windows. We were well catered for by Sue and Bill - and there were surprise treats. Just lovely!

My recent stay at Wombat Bend while working on my PhD thesis was a remarkable experience. The serene environment provided an ideal setting for both relaxation and focused academic work. Sue and Bill's attention to detail in guest comfort was exceptional, making the cozy accommodation and well-maintained facilities highly conducive to productivity. The tranquil natural setting was not only visually pleasing but also inspiring, contributing to my academic progress. I highly recommend Wombat Bend to those seeking a retreat that combines the tranquility of nature with comfort and hospitality. My heartfelt thanks to Sue and Bill for making my stay both productive and memorable.

My partner and I enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing and creatively inspiring stay at The Burrow whilst doing some research in the local area for a film project. Sue and Bill are such friendly, considerate, respectful and kind hosts . They went out of their way to help us with our research, and made our stay a truly memorable one. It is remarkable to witness the land regeneration work they have done over many decades on the site, which is now teeming with wildlife.

Meeting Sue and Bill (and their Airedale terriers Angus and Jemima) for the first time felt like being welcomed back by old friends. They are warm and hospitable hosts with an infectious passion for the natural environment. The Burrow is the perfect place to relax and unwind; the attractions of the Yarra Valley are right at hand, so it makes a great base from which to explore, but there is much joy to be had in quietly contemplating the billabong and absorbing the sights and sounds of this delightful slice of Australia developed and nurtured by Sue and Bill over many decades. And if you're very lucky, you just might get to meet Jennifer!

I'm sad not to be writing this at the little writing desk overlooking the beautiful billabong, and with my dancing wren friends out the window - but alas. I do however have wonderful memories of an idyllic writing week at The Burrow, beautifully hosted by Sue, Bill, Jemima and my adoring (and adored) friend Angus. It was easy to create a routine within the comforts of the mud brick cottage and seamless hospitality. I cannot wait to return - my many many thanks for creating such a beautiful piece of paradise Bill and Sue, and for sharing it so generously!

We had a relaxing time at beautiful ‘The Burrow’ to the birds chipping and regular visits from the lovely Airedale’s Angus and Jemima. It is so close to many great spots wineries and chocolate factory and such good cheese shops. My favorite was doing the black spur drive and completing easy walks to so many water falls. If you want to recharge spend a few days at Sue and Bill’s lovely cottage ❤

Sue & Bill have a beautiful property which we were lucky to share for a weekend. Great provisions and spoiled with some homemade apple & rhubarb stew. Enjoy !

Sue and Bill, (and Angus the
Airedale) are kind, generous and helpful hosts.
We loved the picturesque lake, the blooming callistemons, the wonderful bird life, and the croaking frogs!
The cottage contains everything you need, including excellent breakfast provisions, a super large shower recess and heaps of books.
Altogether a charming retreat!

I spent two nights at The Burrow to do some serious writing and editing on a novel. It was the PERFECT place to do this. Sue and Bill are wonderful hosts, who completely respect privacy and made sure the accommodation was fully decked out in anything you might need. I got there, and did not need to leave until I checked out. Coffee machine, tea pot, snacks, chocolate, electric blanket. Meals as optional extras (dinner was delicious). Sue even loaned me a phone charged because I forgot mine. The view of the billabong out the window is magnificent. My only complaint is I had to leave!!!! Highly recommend, and I will be back.

What a pleasure it was to arrive at The Burrow and straight away feel at home, cosy and relaxed, in the midst of truly beautiful and tranquil surrounds. Sue and Bill are caring and generous hosts, and very kindly arranged for myself and my two girlfriends to stay – the three of us were reunited after being separated during the pandemic, and it was the perfect retreat for us to spend time together. I felt genuinely able to unwind, even for the short duration of our stay. There’s nothing more restorative for the soul than waking to the exquisite sounds of birdsong in the mornings and taking in the billabong and landscape surrounding the property. As well as their special knowledge of local plants and wildlife, Sue and Bill had excellent suggestions for places to eat, to walk, and explore, within the region. It was also a real delight to meet Airedales Angus and Jemima, and to have Angus visit us in the evenings! I am very much looking forward to a return stay, and cannot recommend The Burrow highly enough.

Had a very relaxing and productive weekend writing at the burrow. Particularly enjoyed the company of the many birds who came to visit the porch, the cosy cottage, and Sue and Bill's generosity and welcome.

The Burrow @ Wombat Bend is the perfect place to zen, write and tune in to your self. I came here to work on a creative writing project and left nourished and replenished. The bed is even better that the photos, and Sue cooked me the most delicious, hug-in-a bowl meals. Oh, and that billabong with all the water birds! Would go back again and again. Highly recommend.

From the moment we walked into The Burrow it felt like home. It was a beautiful rustic mud brick cottage with everything you could ever want for a real getaway. The fridge and pantry were stocked with lovely fresh food and treats, and if you didn’t want to read one of the many many books, you could walk around the lovely billabong and enjoy the bird life. Sue and Bill were a delight and entertained us with their stories - we instantly felt like they were great friends. On our first night we were treated to a beautiful home cooked meal and just enjoyed the serenity. We can’t speak highly enough about our stay - The Burrow had everything and more including Angus the airedale who greeted us every morning. Thank you so much Sue and Bill for sharing your little bit of paradise - we will definitely be back. The only negative was it wasn’t long enough!!!
