The meal began with sourdough toast with grated cheese, the cheese may have been a Grana Padano. The toast was crunchy and was generously grated with cheese, the fragrant backdrop was thanks to the butter had been slathered on. The salad was akin to that of a farm picked vegetable, fresh and crisp the balance of the sourness and creaminess was spot on.
The gnocchi was indulgent, every morsel was savored. The meat was tender and flavourful thanks to the tomato jus. The meat was somewhat lacking but what could you expect of a young and energetic young man?

The chocolate dessert was worth the wait, if you like a freshly baked dessert, that is. The dessert takes around 20 minutes from finishing the last meal to delivery. Bask in the dark chocolate goodness, the dessert was crisp on the outside, velvety spongy throughout. As I broke through the insides, a lava of dark chocolate flowed as Mt. Vesuvius did. The semifreddo was creamy and perfectly understated in its sweetness.

Great place to visit, very busy and cosy. Had to wait for a table even on a rainy Wednesday night. Food was excellent and came out quickly. Service was friendly. Try the Wagyu bresaola, it was a real standout.

We went on a vacation to Newcastle.
I went to dinner on Friday in time for the opening. The food was excellent and the staff were kind. I want to visit again next time. I think you have to make a reservation for the weekend evening.

The food was brilliant. I ordered the crab fettuccine and it was beautiful. Extremely authentic. I really like the vibe of the place and the service was really good. I loved the place would recommend.

The best hand made quality pasta restaurant in Newcastle. On the cusp of being fine dining without the pomp and price tag but still pretty expensive. Stunning presentation and delicious authentic Italian flavours. Small serves, but every bite is heaven. We've been three times and loved it each time. Be prepared to wait up to 30m for your meal... it's worth it.

Love Coal River & Co. It's not just the superb food that the chefs create, it's the also the staff that makes us feel welcome each time we visit. Already booked in for the next one.

Really famished and one look at the menu @CoalRiverandCo_DarbySt had me ordering the ricotta gnocchi with Hunter Valley wagyu brisket, spinach, green pepper and crispy shallots.

Such soft pillowey gnocchi, melt in your mouth brisket, spicy hit from the green peppercorns and a lovely rich sauce to round out the medley of delicious flavours. I like the shallots for a textual contrast. Totally satisfied. Comfort food at its best.

Impressed with lunch, I had to try the tiramisu. Oh, so delicious. Slight alcoholic flavour, chocolate, creamy, soft and yummy with each bite. So yum. @CoalRiverandCo_DarbySt - Thanks for a wonderful dining experience.

My husband and I enjoyed 2 different dishes of pasta here. It was the best pasta that I've ever tasted out. Mine has 6 big meatballs which made me over full.The only thing that I can mention for improvement is small place which you may not like when you need some room & privacy.
In general, highly recommended.

Had Sunday lunch here and enjoyed the experience! This is a quiet little cafe with delicious pastas and starters. The main staff manager was very well presented and has clearly studied the menu. One of the female staff members was a tad awkward, but in her favour, she had only just started her shift. The chef did a wonderful job of sending out food in a timely and efficient manner and it was always delicious.

Absolutely a great dining experience. The food was perfectly prepared fresh to order. No cold food sitting around at this place. It was hot, delicious, fresh, and fast. You can't beat that. The meatballs were so tasty. Yummy, I'll be craving it again soon. The the ambience and atmosphere of the place was stunning. They also had a great drink variety of Spirits. We shared a bottle of wine and lemon Frenjelloces to end the evening. We will be back to try some of their other pasta dishes. Everyone in our party raived about their meal. I know mine was incredible. Great place for an Authentic Italian dinner. You will not be disappointed. The meal was so filling we didn't have room for dessert. That will be something I'll be looking forward to for our next visit.

Great little place that does a fantastic job of serving delicious meals in a timely manner.
The staff are attentive and work fabulously together, it was a joy to watch.
We shared 2 entrees and the special for main and was just right.
We were lucky enough to get the last table at around 6:30, I noticed that they do then start a wait list and I totally recommend to go on it and grab a drink nearby until it is your turn to enjoy some delicious flavours.

Every time we visit Newcastle we make sure we visit Coal River, the food and service is too good and we always leave impressed (and full!)

I was blown away by this food. We have lived in Melbourne for 34 years and this food is so much better than any Italian I have had there. I loved the music mix and found out the owner had done every track just for his restaurant.you guys should be really proud of what you have there and we will definitely be back cheers

After reading all the 5 star rave reviews I had high hopes, but I have to say I was a little disappointed. It’s a lovely cosy setting and was very popular. The waitress was kept busy but was attentive enough. Unfortunately the meal fell a little flat. I had the pappardelle and meatballs; the pasta was nice and the sauce was lovely and fresh however the meatballs lacked flavour and needed salt.

The best pasta we've ever had. Delish starters and desert too. Great atmosphere, great hospitality, great customer service. Forgot to tip, but absolutely will next time sorry! Thanks for a lovely night!

I could literally smell the food from Coal River & Co while walking down Darby street when I was looking for a place to have dinner. My boyfriend and I stopped here and it was absolutely delicious, I would highly recommend it to anyone. The pasta is amazing, the servers were awesome as well, great vibes.

Absolutely stunning house-made pasta! From the entrees to start to the honey and lavender panna cotta for dessert, every single bite was heavenly.
Great selection of wines to choose from and warm, friendly, attentive service topped off a first rate dinner out.
I couldn't fault a thing- 100% recommend!

Excellent night out with the girls. Sensational food, nice wine and friendly, efficient staff. What more could you ask for? I'll definitely be back and hoping oxtail ragu pasta is still on the menu.

Great place for a date. Ambiance is nice and the place is quite small. Reasonably diverse wine options. Staff gave us space and were there when we were ready. They also had a good bit of personality. Easy to talk and eat (we had gnocchi and rigatoni) and was delicious. Give it go. Darby street is on the way up.
