Well worth a detour of approx. 10 kms. off the main road heading towards Hobart down the East Coast of Tasmania. The oysters were superb & of decent size. Lovely little caravan where you place your order. There's oyster shells laid out everywhere as you walk up to view the water, which is a quirky touch.

The gold oyster wasn’t ready when I went there so just got to try the silver ones. One of the freshest oysters I’ve ever had in so long. Place is a bit out of the way but it’s definitely worth the trip, especially when you’re in the east coast. Pretty sure I saw a free campsite nearby as well which was not on wiki maps, so if you’re going on a roadtrip/camping, it’s a bonus. Pretty nice local cider selection as well, and the decor is very cute

What an incredibly gorgeous place. Reasonably priced and super cute tables overlooking the lagoon. Highly recommend!

We ordered half a dozen natural to eat there and also took a dozen unshucked to do later!

Great play area for the kids. We could have stayed for hours!!

The best oyster experience we had during our trip to Tasmania! The oysters were beyond impeccable and the prices were amazing. We went for a spilt of gold and silver. The staff were so sweet and really welcoming. This spot is definitely off the beaten path but well worth the detour.

Wow, Simply the best oysters I have ever had! I've eaten oysters in a lot of places and these were the biggest juiciest freshest ever!
I'm so sad I don't live here. Great view, nice people. Deserving of a detour to visit, and you'll want to go back!!

Finally found again from few years back we stumbled upon this cute Oyster shack. It has now fully licensed with Alcohol and all.
Love to find this place again and the Oyster still very fresh and juicy.
Very authentic atmosphere rather than commercial.
When we back again next time, wish to see that Pirate sign. 😉

Amazing large and creamy oysters. If you only have the chance to visit one oyster farm, I’d recommend visiting this one. I visited others nearby and their oysters were smaller and less creamy. These oysters also had an iconic gold shell !!

Arrived at around 2.30pm. They had run out of the gold shell oysters but still glad we got to try the silver ones as they were so fresh and tasty with just lemon. The non-alcoholic apple cider was also delicious. Finished with a couple of Valhalla ice creams. Ladies were so friendly and the place is so cute & quaint. 4 stars as unfortunately we got charged for alcoholic cider but did not realise until it was too late...

Edit: Cassie kindly refunded me the overcharge. Could not fault the service here at all! I hope one day we will get to return and try the gold shell oysters next time. Will definitely recommend this place to all our family and friends!

Super fresh oysters directly from the farm next to the shop. Taken straight from the sea the same day and shuckled on the spot. Can't beat the freshness in any other places.

Must visit and eat oysters here!

Overall 4.9 out of 5

Absolutely a gem of a place and 100% worth the drive just for them gold oysters. Honestly every oyster we shall ever have, will be compared to this place forever more! Best oysters hands down. We ordered a dozen of the gold oysters EACH, washed down with local craft beers with a spectacular view. Service was great & everyone was super friendly. Definitely on the "we'll be back list"

We only found this place by accident following the small road signs but was it worth a detour.
I have never heard of gold oysters but I can safely say they were the tastiest oysters I have ever had. Nothing comes close.
Staff were really nice and it's a well set up area. My son loved the sand pit

We thoroughly enjoyed our oyster tour at Melshell Oyster Shack. The lovely Cass talked us through the harvesting process, and the price of the tour also included a drink of your choice and a half dozen oysters. We were also shown the best way to shuck an oyster and even had a go at shucking one ourselves! Highly recommend it. There was a fire at Dolphin Sands the day we originally had booked in, so a big thanks to Cass for rescheduling and fitting us in the following day at a time that suited us. It was also great news to hear that everyone at Dolphin Sands is now safe. Thank you!

Great oysters - creamy and large. We only had the silver variety - were great with lemon and Tabasco sauce. This is a quirky spot with seating overlooking the estuary. Fun and yum!

We still have this issue with our car - it keeps turning into oyster farms. We thought it was just one area but it’s happening all along the east coast of Tasmania.

The oysters - just amazing. We have always had great oysters in Tasmania and Melshell is right up there!

But to sit looking out over Pelican Bay on a lovely spring day was absolute heaven!

Be sure to stop at Melshell Oyster Shack near Swansea. You can thank me later!

Wonderful, WONDERFUL experience having super fresh oysters for the first time! I mean I've tried to eat them before in Singapore and even in Sydney's fish market, but they always seemed too fishy for me to stomach them.. BUT these Gold ones from Melshell has totally changed my view of oysters... Forever? Haha.. Thanks guys! Now I hope that I can find some other place that serves a half decent oyster.. Hope to be back again soon!!

Oh, and my kids loved the cheese toastie too.. 🙄

We were just cruising the sights when we saw the sign for their oysters.
Decided to drop in and see what they had to offer.
We bought 1/2dozen of mixed. Gold and silver.
Never had a gold oyster before and wanted to see the difference.
The gold oyster was plump and buttery.
The silver was also plump but crisp and salty. Loved them both👍
We also bought a serving of pickled octopus.😋👍

This place is a hidden gem! Their oysters are very reasonably priced and extremely fresh. Unfortunately, the less familiar gold oysters were not available the day I visited but plain old silver were still delicious! Other seafood dishes on offer were also of a high standard, such as the pickled octopus and mussel platter. This little eatery is definitely worth going off the beaten track for, especially if you are a fan of oysters.

The biggest and freshest oysters we had during our trip to Tasmania in mid-Sept this year. Quick and friendly services.
