The best selection of bulk grains and dried beans, and other ingredients and spices and olive oils that I have yet to see in NYC. Located just East of 2nd ave on 4th street. I often purchase whole grain hulled barley and black beluga lentils which are difficult to find at any other organic grocery stores, where few if any whole foods stores even have these bulk items in bins. You are encouraged to use your own container or charge to save on packaging waste, and you don't have to be a member and can still receive discounts in some cases. The prices are very fair. The members that work as staff are unusually friendly and patient. If the store is crowded or there is technical error, it can be a long wait, but it is still a better store than other grocery options. Almost all of the bulk items and fruits and vegetable are organic and locally sourced (not as local as the union square greenmarket, but sourcing from local Lancaster Farms in many cases from PA), and some items such as apples can be sourced from the NYC greenmarket, at one time from the only NY State organic apple orchard.
- Be careful of the hours, as the store is only open later in the day on Wednesdays when they are re-stocking, posted on their website, and regularly opens after 12pm on most days of the week and weekend. You can conveniently call the store to confirm they are open, and confirm if anything that you want is in stock, which I often do before traveling to the store when stocking up on grains and dried goods.
- 4/24/2023, Monday, 4:30pm, stocking up with flaxseed to be milled later in my own stainless steel container from the bulk section, and looking at chocolate/cocoa options which are made without the additive soy lecithin, and noting the organic Savoura greenhouse tomatoes from Canada with compostable labels.
- 5/1/2023, Monday, now Raaka local Brooklyn factory unroasted 75% unrefined maple nib chocolate bars on sale, and I like the organic Tierra Farms dark Italian chocolate covered almonds from bin/jar, made without soy lecithin additive. 4th St Coop is still out of the bulk roasted peanuts today.

The 4th Street food coop has some of the best and most affordable produce on the whole island of Manhattan. Much smaller than the Park Slope Food Coop but packs a similar punch. Get the family yearly membership to save an extra 8% on produce. Bring reusable containers to reduce waste. I highly recommend you do all of your grocery shopping here. Enjoy!

the best prices + experience in all of new york. they always have what i need. the employees/volunteers are the sweetest. BYO containers/bags or buy some jars. they even have an area where you can drop off empty containers for other people to use! i always look forward to shopping here.

I've been shopping here for years. Freshest non gmo locally sourced organic produce. A trusted local establishment that has survived all the big chain supermarkets. Here's hoping they don't get priced out like all the other great small businesses in nyc. Supporting this store feels good too! Thanks to all who help make this co-op a success!

Best bulk bin offerings in Manhattan I've found yet. There is a large selection of beans, grains, nuts, dry fruits, and other ingredients at a good price. I'll continue making the trip to refill my essentials. Oh, and the person working was nice and told me about the student discount.

I love coming to the 4th st food co-op. They are very friendly and comply with safety regulations against covid. When you go in you must leave your bags/carts in the entrance and go into the back of the store to wash your hands; only 4 people allowed inside the store including staff. Their prices are reasonable and products are great quality. A little far from me but it's always nice to make the trip and buy something from them. 😊

I went for the first time this afternoon and even being unprepared I had the absolute best experience. The store is very small, but they had exactly what I was looking for (laundry detergent and flour both by the bulk) and had nice reusable containers to put the items in but also had a shelf of clean containers people had donated to the store for other shoppers to fill things up with to take home (for free!).

The workers were nice and helpful even with my “newcomer” questions :) I went 4 PM on a weekday and was the only person in the store, which is a nice change of pace!

I love shopping here and even was a volunteer worker for a while (and hopefully will pick up a shift again one day). Great produce, dried goods, and a selection of vegetarian/vegan products. Some of my favorites are the tamari, tempeh, and fresh tofu. The place has a great community vibe, and it’s neat to know your purchases support Manhattan’s last all-volunteer run co-op! And I find the prices reasonable for the quality.

This 44 year old food co-op is entirely run by members that volunteer 2+ hours a week. It's one of the few remaining coops in the country that operate this way and is open to the public. Everything in the store is organic and most things are local. The bulk spices and teas are the best deal in town.

Firstly, I am currently a working member at the 4th St Food Co-op and have been for a year. For volunteering a mere two hours per week working members receive TWENTY % off all goods. As already mentioned, non-working members can pay a small annual fee and receive EIGHT % off.

These discounts are on top of already great prices, especially the fresh produced and bulk nuts/dried fruits/ herbs and spices. As a college student in Manhattan, the co-op has allowed me access to affordable and very high quality products.

I would recommend the co-op for anyone who cares deeply about food sourcing practices, as the co-op's rigor and methods are unmatched in the city. Also, for the eco-conscious shopper who prefers minimal packaging, the co-ops emphasis on bringing your own bulk containers and bags is ideal. Lastly, for the penny conscious shopper who is willing to cook, the co-op will not only enable you to bring some of the highest quality ingredients into your kitchen but also a massive variety.

Be sure to check the website or subscribe to the produce list for timely reminders of fresh deliveries :)

Everyone should go out and join this co-op now. Firstly this co-op is super affordable even if you don't have the time to work there. I'm a non working member at only $35 dollars a year which is amazing. The produce is always superb and the product selection forces you to learn something new about health.

Great local produce, lots of bulk food, and everything in the store is organic. Plus anyone can shop, and members get a discount. I’ve been a member for over a year and will never by produce anywhere else—it’s spectacular, especially the stuff that comes in from NY, NJ, and PA farms.

Amazing place - you can bring your own containers and buy all sorts of items - from cereal, flour, pasta to (dish) soap and detergent. The staff are very nice and the prices are great.

I honestly wouldn't eat if it weren't for the 4th Street Food Co-op. Shopping with a conscious can be very difficult, but luckily since becoming a working member at the 4th Street Food Co-op I am able to purchase delicious organic produce and bulked goods without the fear of GMOs and nasty pesticides.

I love having access to fresh organic produce year around. Their produce and bulk goods are also reasonably priced.
