SHOPPERS Leonardtown

This store has nice wide aisles, is well stocked and sells colossal donuts.

Nicely laid out. Well managed.

Shoppers in Leonardtown is a new store that was previously a McKays which was previously a SuperFresh.

Open later than most other grocery stores. Ultimate convenience!

So far, so good! Clean, pretty good selection and helpful staff.

Always personable!!!

Great sales on meats.

The new manager named Jenny , takes her job seriously and is really trying to improve customer relations between employees that work there and the public. She was very helpful and kind, I hope she can get that store turned around. Good luck to her.

They had nice fresh fruit & vegetables this time. Found everything I needed to get at a decent price, customer service needs improvement.

Average grocery store

Store is clean an well stocked......But I am disappointed with the fried chicken. They used to have great chicken but anymore its seldom fresh. Been under the heat too long. Also donuts are smaller than the other 2 stores locally.

Well, the Shoppers in Leonardtown has been open for about a week. Yesterday we made our first visit, here’s what I think:

Pros:
1. The doughnuts. Oh boy, if you haven’t had a “colossal” donut, you’re missing out!
2. They’re trying. There were a lot of people buzzing around the store stocking shelves and many management level personnel addressing issues as they arose.

Cons:
1. The prices. Holy cow! We were excited for Shoppers to arrive as they are typically a more budget friendly grocery store, like Food Lion. I’ve gotta tell ya, their prices are high as heck! With the exception of a couple sale items, the produce and meats were easily 25-35% higher than their competitor next store. It seems this is literally just a rebranded McKays.

2. Grand opening glitches. About 1/3 of our groceries wouldn’t ring up and the cashier was struggling to search through their system. Also, the primary reason for our visit (donuts) were nearly sold out by 10:30am. Everybody knows about the donuts, double down on your donut sale forecast!

3. Low inventory. You walk in and it’s like entering a Costco because there was so much unused space. There were also quite a few product brands that were nowhere to be found. Stock up!

4. Food shelf life issues. We looked at the bread and milk specifically, 0/2. Both items had the majority of the selection set to expire in 5 days. That’s not good. A half gallon of milk shouldn’t have a food expiration date of less than 7-10 days.

Summary:

We’re happy that the old McKays made way for Shoppers, but I’ve got to say, donuts alone won’t keep your doors open. Once the newness wears off and people realize they’re having to pay Harris Teeter prices without the huge selection and premium customer service… game over. Good luck and I sure hope things smooth out in the coming months.
