Dollar General

Dollar General has its origin in Scottsville, Kentucky, with James Luther "J.L." Turner and his son Cal Turner. James Turner's father died in an accident in 1902 when James was only 11. James quit school to work on the family farm, helping to provide for his mother and siblings, and subsequently never completed his education. After two unsuccessful attempts at retailing, James became a traveling dry goods salesman for a Nashville wholesale grocer. James left the sales job after 10 years and settled his family in Scottsville, Kentucky. During the Great Depression, he began buying and liquidating bankrupt general stores. Cal accompanied his father to these closeouts at a young age, gaining valuable business knowledge and skills.[14]

In October 1939, James and Cal opened J.L. Turner and Son with an initial investment of $5,000 each. The switch to retailing resulted in annual sales above $2 million by the early 1950s. By the mid-1950s Turner had 35 department stores in Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1955, Cal Turner developed his idea of a retail store selling goods for a dollar, based on the Dollar Days promotions held at other department stores, by converting Turner's Department Store in Springfield, Kentucky, into the first Dollar General Store.[15] In 1964 J.L. Turner died leaving his son Cal Turner to succeed him.

Just left there. I wanted to use a coupon but had to meet some requirements first. The cashier was very sweet and assisted me with getting those requirements met so that the coupon would be honored!

This store has gotten so much better since the changeover in staff. They are overwhelmed right now trying to do a remodel while the store stays open for business (people be patient). I have to say even with customer abuse, they are still nice. I witnessed an irate customer scream and yell about the store being a mess during the remodel. The staff was still nice to them even though the customer didn't deserve it! The acting manager is friendly & professional.

Updated! They have more available some fresh veggies and fruit and more frozen foods and drinks. Nice area for checkout

Convenient and newly remodeled store a lot more options to choose from, especially when you need to grab groceries quickly

Good store but the aisles are always blocked with carts full of stuff and no one putting it out on the shelf it's nobody's fault except for the company too cheap to hire more than one Employee

Very clean and well stocked. The employees are very nice along with any delivery men in the store when you're there. Easy to find what you are looking for and always clean and neat and stocked.

Has just about everything you may need from a food section, cleaning supplies and meds. Very friendly and helpful staff. The store is well organized and has reasonable hours to serve the nearby neighborhood.

It's my go to place for that one ingredient I forgot for dinner. Best price on name brand pet food. Always find something in the $1. aisle

The store is clean. Employees very helpful- helped us find what we needed. The assistant Manager Jeronda , went out of her way to help. When I am in the area again I will shop there...

Staff very pleasant noticed my entrance and cheerful good evening. Double bagged my liter's without me asking. And pleasantries on leaving thanks again.

Kristy is always very helpful and friendly, especially with my kids, they cant wait to come and see her! Very rare these days, need more like her!

Where else can you get alot of things you need for cheaper. My local dollar general has an amaing staff. Always friendly and accomodating to help you find odd things you cant find easily. I do alot of shopping here

Great selection at great prices. I havent been to a walmart in years and I will not return as long as there is a DG nearby and there always is.

They can be a little pricey but they had wat I needed which kept from driving to Walmart...
