El Traviezo Mexican Food

Captivating. It's been years since I've had Mexican this good and laid back. This is our second visit this week and after trying 5 different dishes we are thrilled to have El Traviezo in the neighborhood. Good spice, generous servings, lovely staff. A side of rice has no right to be this good.

My mother can rarely have even black pepper on her food these days; but she scarfed down her spicy dish. It was clear she was in a trance from how tasty the food was.

We walked in, got sat right away, there were guests sitting inside and outside. A nice outdoor space for dining, we chose to eat at the bar. It was Cinco de Mayo, we got margaritas and nachos. They were quite delicious and we will definitely be back to try more of the menu!!!

Really nice bar and space overall. Got the chicken chimichangas and they were incredible!

Simply incredible food, the best we’ve had locally. Everything was fresh and service was fast and friendly! We loved the drinks as well. Can’t wait to return to our new favorite local spot!

I ordered the mango margarita & chimichangas & my husband ordered the traditional margarita & taquitos. My seven month old LOVED the rice & chicken from my chimichangas. The server was a doll!

An easily overlooked dinner option, this small restaurant and bar delivered the best Mexican food I have ever enjoyed. While I have never professed to be am expert of Mexican cuisine - I have eaten enough to know that I will enthusiastically be returning here soon.

Service was fast and friendly and there looks to be outside dining options when weather is cooperating.

Loud music greets you as you enter the small dining room from street side parking. And the appointments are basic - but for me this only furthered the authenticity and fun of the night.
I should have photographed the dishes but we were too quickly enjoying them. Nothing we ate or drank rated behind such Mexican alternatives as Sol Turo.

My husband and I wanted to try a new place for drinks and apps. We ordered margaritas for drinks and they were very big and delicious!!! I ordered the nachos traviezo with Al pastor. You have a choice of meat for these nachos. These were very tasty but I would’ve liked to have tasted a bit more of the meat/sauce. My husband ordered the shrimp tacos and said they were tasty. The atmosphere is authentic and quaint. You get a lot of food and huge drinks for a good price. We had 5 huge margaritas between the two of us and food for $75! The staff was very friendly! We definitely revisit to try other things in the menu and sit in the outdoor area with warmer weather.

If you're looking for authentic Mexican food this is it. Uh-may-zing flautas. Can't wait to come back and try something new!

Definitely a hole in the wall kind of place, so set your expectations about ambience accordingly! The food was great, and the margaritas were pretty good too. It's a reasonable value for what you get. I got the mole chicken and the sauce was really good. There was a bit of a language barrier with the server though. I asked if there was flour in the mole, and in retrospect, I don't think she knew what I meant. So I probably had some gluten. I can tolerate a bit, so it wasn't terrible, but this may not be a great place for people with serious food allergies/reactions. The refried beans and guacamole were great too. Our vegetarian friends were happy. I'd definitely go back and get a corn tortilla option. It was very warm and stuffy in the dining room. The patio looks nice, but it was raining, so we stayed inside. The food is definitely the star here.

Our first time here. Loved the chips and salsa. I had the chicken mole burrito and really enjoyed it. My wife had a chicken quesadilla which she liked but has had better. It's a small place with not a lot of seating and the bar is small. We were there early so I figure they'd be at capacity pretty quick. We noticed several folks coming in for take-out. I will come back if I find myself in that area.

We Californians are snobby about our Mexican food. This place is legit. My husband and I love it here. It might not have the most spectacular ambiance in the world, but the food certainly makes it worth it. We almost always get the Alambre. The Al Pastor burrito was very good too. Plenty of food, very filling. The staff are always super nice.

Amazing food, the meats are all marinated with full flavor throughout. I wanted to go back that first time and order one of everything on the menu, the flavors were spectacular!

My wife and I had dinner there last night and everything was great. I had three hard shell tacos and they were overflowing with meat, cheese and lettuce. Nancy had chicken Mole and ate every bit, yummy. Service was quick even though the place was almost full and people lined up for take out orders. The owner (Jose Corona) waited and served us personally, highly recommend going!!

This is an amazing family run restaurant! The owners use to run a food truck in New Haven and have opened up shop here! The food is absolutely amazing! Everything is fresh and made with great quality ingredients and it shows! The owners strive to have the best food around and I would highly recommend it!

The Mexican food was authentic and enjoyable. He’s moving across town shortly and will have more seating space as well as an upgraded establishment. Highly recommended restaurant if you are searching for Mexican cuisine.

Blown away! Got our order through Grub Hub and it was amazing. The food was filling but not greasy, everything was tasty and came with great sauces. Great portions for the price too. It was perfect... huge props to El Traviezo.

Been in New England now a few years coming from San Diego. Have had a middle of the road experience at best with most Mexican food in the region. I went in with no expectations and figured this would be the same. It definitely is not. This is the best Mexican food I've had in a very long time. Carne asada Torta, burrito and pollo taquitos. It was like being in a taqueria back home. Que rico, muy sabor. Found our new favorite restaurant. Thank you

Absolutely delicious food. We had nachos, asada tacos, and a chicken burrito. Everything was perfection. Large portions. Fast service, kind staff. Worth a trip!

First time here..was driving by and was a bit hungry..wanted to give El Traviezo a try...Since I was famished, I immediately put in my order..Waitress was very attending and curious..I ordered Chicken Quesadilla..Boy!..was I surprised..when the waitress brought in my order..They were huge..size of a small pizza cut evenly..quite impressive and might I add very deliciouso..There was Mexican music playing in the background as well as on the large screen TV. Overall..the food was great, folks friendly and hospitable. I would highly recommend this establishment.
