This is called Cooke Memorial Park created before the Slocum memorial was added. John Cooke, the last surviving male Pilgrim was buried there in 1695. The Fairhaven Improvement Association placed his monument upon his neglected gravesite in 1901. The Cooke Memorial is the larger monument on the site. Cooke Memorial Park is in Oxford Village, the oldest and most historic part of Fairhaven, MA that was once a part of Dartmouth MA before the name changed to Fairhaven. This site was formerly called Oxford Burial Hill. Upon excavating for a foundation for the Cooke Memorial, the FIA accidentally unearthed 4 skeletons. One coffin had a primitive name plate that read, "John Cooke". In 2017, a Research Scientist, Tom Urban, did ground penetrating radar at Cooke Park and found potentially 60 burial shafts. Oxford Burial Hill est. 1600s has some of Fairhaven's earliest settlers in marked and unmarked graves.

It was interesting to see. I was walking by and stop to check out the monument. It's a cool piece of local history so if you're near it's worth seeing but it's not worth going out of your way.

A nice tribute to Capt Slocum, the first person to circumnavigate the globe alone. It was a thrill to see the spot where he built his sloop, The Spray.

Just be aware that there is no a lot of parking. It’s just street parking and limited.

It all started here in this water with the help of the people from Fairhaven and New Bedford. It's always mentally refreshing to visit a place you read about in a book. Some still whisper, "Will it pay ? "
