Shack in the Back BBQ

Turkey ribs with great home cooking type sides. Stopped in Louisville for lunch with a friend. I had the turkey ribs, mac and cheese with Kentucky wonder green beans. Everything was seasoned very good. The meat had the right amount of smoke, it was tender and moist. Never had turkey ribs but they are really just a part of the wing I think but tasty. Oh yeah they have a white lightening sauce that is served with it in addition to the bbq sauces at the table.

A legendary spot in Fairdale. Amazing bbq, great service, very nice atmosphere. If you haven't been, please try this place. Great menu items, a full bar, and great happy hour specials.

The Mac is good. So are the ribs. I like the variety of sauces. The pork was delicious. We also really liked the beans.

Great spot for local BBQ. The decor inside and out was new age rustic, and cute. Our service was great. We ordered:

1. Pork rinds - the group liked these, but pork rinds are not for me.

2. Homemade potato chips - these were delicious, and the accompanying white listening sauce was yummy. (5/5 🌟)

3. Beef brisket - a little dry but overall good flavor. The accompanying bbq sauces paired nicely. (4/5 🌟)

4. Pulled pork - this also had a good flavor. (4/5 🌟)

5. Potato salad - this mayonnaise based side was seasoned well and had great add-ins.

6. Green beans - these were delicious and were in an au jus like broth that I really enjoyed. (7/5 🌟)

Overall, it was a great place to stop and try the local eats. Would recommend.

First time at Shack in the Back. Service was a little slow but not too bad for a busy Friday night. Had the Turkey ribs appetizer, pulled pork sandwich with Mac and cheese/potato salad sides, and Combo #2 (Ribs, Smoked Sausage, Brisket, Pork with two sides of corn and fries). Turkey ribs were fantastic and an absolute must with their White Lightening Sauce. Also used their mustard based BBQ sauce on other items and that was very good as well. Pulled pork had a good smoke flavor. Andouille smoked sausage had good flavor and heat. Only disappointment was the Mac and cheese which was thin for my liking.

ETA: Went back today (5/13/23) and quality was still on point. Service was quick as well. Well priced for the quality of food. Went with the Turkey Rib Dinner and it was fantastic. Will come back out again and have found a favorite in the turkey ribs.

This place has really grown up since moving to their new location. Still same great BBQ!

Shack in the Back is a true Louisville(ish) gem. We visited here a few years ago, before the move to the new location, and promised we'd visit again.

Then things like COVID happened and life got in the way...so we finally made it to Shack in the Back again. Woo-Hoo!

While the original location definitely had its own charm and character, the new location is freakin' gorgeous. It's probably 3 or 4 times bigger than the original location, it has a large outdoor seating area, and even a few table on the second floor. (Yes, a Second Floor!)

We visited on a Saturday afternoon and were seated immediately. The weather was fantastic and there were a number of people eating outside (not me...I'm not an outdoor seating kinda guy). Our server greeted us immediately and got our drink orders.

The menu isn't extensive, but it doesn't need to be. It's well suited to Shack in the Back's focus (BBQ) and doesn't clutter the menu with nearly the same items.

I love, Love, LOVE the interior. It's kind of rustic inside with a lot of exposed wood, several television screens showing various sporting events, and the most unique gift shop I've ever seen. I get the impression that some time before it was the improved Shack in the Back that it was a bank. The gift shop is inside a literal bank vault. #CompletelyAwesome!

I had the pulled pork nachos (I'm a sucker for nachos anywhere I go) and we delighted to find they're served on fresh-made potato chips instead of your average tortilla chips. While I've had pulled pork nachos before, they did not measure up to Shack in the Back's.

Our server (Abby?) was spot-on with drink refills, making sure we had what we needed, and stopped for a friendly chat a few times.

I absolutely love the new location of Shack in the Back and I feel bad that I haven't been there in so long. Gonna have to fix that and go again soon.

Absolutely amazing BBQ in a really unique location. They've got all of the staples including pulled chicken, brisket and pork. I got the brisket sandwich and really enjoyed it. My wife really enjoyed her pulled chicken as well. The sides were all delicious as well. I really enjoyed all of the different sauces they offer, and even bought a bottle to take home with us. If you're a lover of BBQ, then definitely check this place out!

I have been eating at this place for years! Best service, great food! I love getting the turkey ribs (always cooked to perfection). Every one of their sides is amazing!

They have recently added an appetizer consisting of fries, cheese and bacon. They were incredible!

Just go! You will not be disappointed.

Great food. Glad we went here. This was my daughter's first time at the Shack. She really enjoyed her pulled pork sandwich, fries, and potato salad. I enjoyed my ribs, fries, and baked beans. I keep forgetting to buy a bottle of their sop, not as good as mine, but I like it. Much better prices and quality than the BBQ place closer to me, so worth the drive.

First time 01/27. Best BBQ place ever! I had a great Pork Chop sandwich, Burgoo and Fries! All fantastic flavors! Wife had Brisket! 5+ stars! Atmosphere family friendly. We will be back!

A great spot for some delicious BBQ. It’s known in the area and worth a stop if you get a chance. The brisket was really nice and the mac and cheese and green beans were excellent. There are four sauces to choose from, with all four having very distinct flavors (my favorites were the tangy and spicy). Nice staff with fast service. Go support this business.

Let me tell you guys, if you’ve never had the food here, you better RUN at here to eat! Jennifer and her staff were all so polite, friendly and I called them to do a order for 50+ people for my husband’s birthday party.
The food is amazingly good. No complaints at all. Everyone loved it and was yes her number and business card. Contact Jennifer King I promise you, you will not be disappointed in the quality and taste of their food. I’ll definitely use them again for a huge event and for a regular night out to eat.
Reasonable on prices too even through this Covid and price rises that’s going up.

BBQ, potato salad and max n cheese is what we got, I can only imagine what the rest of what they have would taste like. Now I wished I got more from them at the time of ordering but trust me I definitely will order different things from here on out. My go to catering for BBQ FOR LIFE!

I will ABSOLUTELY be coming back here, and I live out of state! I had the full rack of ribs, side of baked beans, and a side of potato salad. Everything tasted exactly how it did in my head. Zero disappointments. And the BBQ sauces... 🤌🏼. The staff was super friendly, the prices were very reasonable, and the atmosphere made me fall in love. 🥰 Thank you SITB for making my stay in KY so amazing.

Good prices, a little out of the way but a cool little drive into small towns. The food was amazing, the sides were delicious. The mac and cheese was my favorite but the coleslaw was also great. The ribs were meaty and well seasoned but made tons better with their hot bbq sauce. The pulled pork was juicy and smoky. Quick service and fair prices. Love this place.

After a long hike, a Jefferson Memorial Forest we stopped in for lunch. It was more than just good. The turkey ribs were amazing and the pulled pork was excellent. The green beans were like crack I couldn’t stop eating them. From the hostess to our server Alexandria, we had a wonderful experience. It’s a long way for us to drive, but worth every mile!

Shack catered my wedding last year, and made all my visions come true! A full charcuterie board for the crowd, and a bunch of options for any type of meals you want! Their new location is sooo nice! Super cheap drinks, hot and delicious food!

Facebook @bbqunchained visited 06/23/2022 Shack in the Back BBQ in Fairdale, KY hit the spot today. I paired the pork sandwich (sweet sauce, of course) with mac 'n cheese and Nanny's potato salad. One bite of the potato salad and I knew I'd love this place. I could've sworn they stole my mother's recipe. This place has an awesome down home vibe and the most friendly staff. My waitress dropped off an unsolicited to-go sweet tea saying "no one should have to go out in this heat without a drink." So, if you find yourself skipping along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, be sure to stop in to the Shack and say hello.

This new location is great. Really cool balcony and patio seating. Every single person working was great and my server Deahna was super friendly and quick. The turkey ribs with white lightning sauce is what everyone talks about from here and the hype is absolutely real. Just really good bbq, amongst the best if we have here.

This place is phenomenal, they catered our company Christmas party a few years ago. So being in the area just had to stop for some turkey ribs. Definitely was not disappointed.
