Calypso Spirits Bar

Came here a few months ago. At the time they were only open 2 months. They were out of some things but I enjoyed my food and drink. Dec recommend the bread and butters and the drink with the egg whites on top. Service was excellent. I can’t wait to come back.

Ate at this restaurant following a recommendation from a family member. Food was on point…delicious. Specialty cocktails…10/10. We had the NOLA style BBQ shrimp and it was perfection. Also had the Adair with Spiced Shrimp. Both dishes were perfect with the chosen spices. Sampled the Breads and Butters as well and the pepper jelly was fabulous. I had a spiced pineapple margarita and it was amazing. My brother had the “you’re killin me smalls” and it was so good he had 2. Desserts were wonderful as well. Can’t recommend this place enough. Low-Key atmosphere, great outdoor space too.

One of the top places in the city for quality cocktails. They have a great selection of hard-to-find liquor and a classic yet modern cocktail menu. Atmosphere is wonderful and service feels very homey and friendly. I haven't had the food (yet !), but can say without a doubt the drinks will not disappoint. Highly recommend a classic daquiri made with Probitas rum !

I ordered the Shrimp and Grits, it was pictured with bread on Google Maps. While waiting for my order I saw that someone else ordered the same dish, theirs came out with bread. Mine was delivered to me without bread, when I asked the waitress about the bread she brought out pumpernickel rye. Which was not the bread pictured in the photo. They also were having supplier issues, they were not selling chicken wings, the Calypso salad, and some type of patty.

I love Calypso’s! Definitely not a standard Soulard bar. They have an impressive drink selection, and of course regular cocktails and other beverages. The atmosphere is so cool! It’s very chill and very laid back. It’s a great place to get comfy, sit, and have a beverage or two. My only complaint, the service can be slow (but the staff is very friendly and very professional) However, I do continue to go back because the drinks are so good and I love the atmosphere.

The atmosphere is what drew us in to give Calypso a try. The open feel of the covered patio flanked with flickering street lamps really fits in with soulard and felt very welcoming.

The list of spirits is pretty large and there’s easily something for everyone. Pours are 2oz. so you’re getting enough if you’re having some bourbon or rye. The cocktails are great and I highly recommend trying the “I’m older & have more insurance” made with tomato gin, empress gin, basil simple syrup, lemon juice and citric acid for a tart finish. It tasted amazing and the presentation was simple and refined. I also ordered a gin fizz with moletto gin as a custom order and the bartender did an amazing job. They even garnished it with a little sliced tomato on a skewer and tomato juice art around the foam on top kind of like a latte.

The food was also great. We had the bread & butters, as well as a Calypso salad to split. It was easily enough to share and provided a lot of different flavors. The bread & butters comes with marble rye, focaccia, and baguette slices served with two butter spreads (savory and sweet) pickled veggies and a sweet pepper jelly. The salad has dried banana chips, apricot pieces, and fresh pineapple wedges tossed with walnuts and romaine.

We finished the night with a dessert of Hummingbird cake. It was served in a square cast iron skillet and was very decadent. The cake was skillfully spiced and baked to a fluffy consistency, and the cream cheese icing was very rich. It’s best shared with fiends, as it’s a lot of sugar.

Overall we really enjoyed our time at Calypso and we highly encourage you to check it out if you’re visiting Soulard.

The bartenders were incredible. The 5 of us got different drinks, and all described them as “balanced”; all flavors were present but very well mixed. The bartenders were very experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly. One thing that puts them apart - when we ordered our second round, they asked what they could improve on in those drinks (more bitters, sweeter, etc.). We had nothing to say, but appreciated the time the bartenders took to learn how to improve our experience.
We’re super excited to try the kitchen next and consider this a staple now in Soulard.

What a spot! I stumbled upon this cocktail bar in Soulard, and let me tell you, it's something special. The patio is where it's at – cozy and laid-back. And the cocktails? Just wow. Tasty, creative, and served with a smile. Whether you're out with friends or just need a chill place to unwind, this is the place to be. Definitely coming back!

Food was on point. Let me tell you that bacon OMG I’ve been trying to cut back on pork but mannnn if I had to break my own promise I’m glad I did for theirs. The Cornbread Benedict was soooo rich. I don’t even like hollandaise but the lemon hollandaise really sent this dish over the top. My friend had the Asaro and Shrimp when I tell you her plate was cleannnn by the end of our meal. The shrimp was extra jumbo lol when they say jumbo they mean it. The staff was amazing, Kayla really was the best wait/host staff I’ve encountered in a long time. When she wasn’t with us I could hear some of her interactions with other guest and she really brought a light to the ambience in the restaurant! The breakfast shot will get you right for sure. Thank you for a wonderful first brunch of 2024 to celebrate my friend!

The renovations they have done to get this place open are incredible. We had an AMAZING brunch that looked like it could be on the cover of a food magazine at a completely normal price. They had a great band but you could still have a conversation. The staff was incredibly friendly. Great addition to Soulard, nice change of pace. We will definitely be back. PS great coffee too.

Very good drinks. I loved the spicy pineapple margarita . I would have loved to try food but unfortunately the kitchen was closed .

Amazingly chill atmosphere with top of the line drinks for a reasonable price! Chris is one of the greatest mixologists in Missouri and the staff makes sure that you feel at home. Excited to try the food next time I'm there.

What a great addition to Soulard. The Cajun BBQ shrimp are AMAZING! And they have non-alcoholic options for those of us that are not drinkers, which is a huge plus!! 10/10

This place is a vibe. Great ambiance, excellent cocktails and small plates, and lovely staff. They have a huge outdoor patio with air conditioning. The non-alcoholic cocktail I had was delish; I would love to see them expand their n/a cocktail offerings beyond 2 options. The hominy hummus with fry bread is what's up.

This is Def a gem in soulard! Their craft cocktails are amazing and awesome friendly staff! The bartender was outstanding! Just an experience all in itself watching him make the drinks! I got the "your Killin me smalls" cocktail and it was amazing!

Great place for cocktails and atmosphere! Everyone was so nice and very knowledgeable on mixology. Wonderful place to hang out and sip on the best mixed drinks in Soulard. We will definitely be going back often.

Calypso is a cut above the rest. Comparatively, Calypso stands above the typical fare from the surrounding Soulard neighborhood (not to knock the Soulard vibe; I live here for good reason). I'm amazed to find a high-end cocktail lounge in the unassuming dive bar landscape of Southern St. Louis. More over, I found Calypso is a bar that Soulard has been significantly lacking. The drinks from Calypso are brought to life by the friendly bar manager, Chris—a practiced mixologist of 15+ years who is as adventurous as he is rationale with his utilization of spirits. I had 2 amazing drinks while sitting at the dog-friendly semi-covered patio. My favorite part is that neither drink was a feature on their menu. Upon request, Chris was able to give me the exact kind of drink I was looking for. If you're looking for a great craft cocktail, a friendly staff, and a modern yet intimate setting for a Soulard hang-out, Calypso is the place to be.
