Hoxworth came to my work and did a blood donation bus today. It was my first time donating and I was excited to finally do it because I had been wanting to for a while. Below is my detailed experience.

Andrew was so kind when checking/registering me in. I didn't feel nervous at all and he was a great conversation-holder.

Once finally in the chair, I was ready for my nurse (who was also SUPER sweet) to put the needle in. She did a fantastic job - it barely pinched. I do not have a fear of needles, I just don't like seeing them go in sideways, so I looked away during that part. She continuously checked on me until halfway through I told her I was getting lightheaded. She turned on the fan and told me to move/kick my feet, but I started seeing black. I said this right before I put my head back and passed out. I had never, in my life, passed out or fainted. I woke up to her bandaging my arm and practically mothering me to make sure I was okay. To me, it felt like I took a peaceful nap, though I'm sure it was mere seconds for everyone else. I also woke up sweating to the point where I was concerned I soiled myself (TMI, I know). Luckily I hadn't, and the kind staff put cold wet towels on my face and throat as I came to my senses more and more. The towels definitely helped in this area.

I had what I consider a full, standard meal for lunch (about 500 calories) and a very sugary iced latte for my breakfast drink (300+ calories) but I guess it wasn't enough. I tend to have low blood sugar and didn't even consider this when donating, so I think that contributed as well. Regardless, the staff took SUCH good care of me until I felt better! I wish I could remember the woman's name that tended to me. She knows who she is. Thank you, kind soul!

I haven't been to the physical location but I highly recommend this donation bus. And if you're asking if I'd do it again, my answer is yes. Though next time I'll make sure to eat more sugar/carbs before donating AND to inform the staff of my chance of syncope.

From day 1 it has been a blessing to even walk through the doors. I've been so impressed with the amount of knowledge the entire staff passes along to their patients. And what a benefit that really is. Dr. Govel is an incredible wealth of connections & kindness as well as information. I am truly greatful to God for having met Dr. Bryant thru him, my Kidney transplant went fabulous because of their dedication to the people they serve. The whole staff @ UC deserve recognition for all they do. I love them all. The phlebotomy team. The pharmacy. The secretaries. The housekeeping crews. My awesome Surgeon Dr. Lemon. Nephrologist Dr.s throughout. Every single Nurse, Males & Females! I'm thankful for you. The Anesthesiologist! Even the food! It's simply a round of care like no other experience I've had. Blessed by God. Absolutely. My deepest gratitude. May the Circle be unbroken.

The staff ALL the way through have been caring, informative, consistent & professional. I truly have felt like part of an extended family. Thank you ALL!!! We are BLESSED to be in the care of UC Hoxworth transplant team.

I've been receiving the best possible prenatal care for myself and my unborn child at the Hoxworth Center. Staff is lovely, doctors, nurses and ultrasound techs are friendly, knowledgeable and have wonderful senses of humor. I cannot wait to have my little dude here in August 💕. Thank you for helping me heal from a traumatic experience at another hospital in the area with my first child.
