After exploring the inactive amusement park nearby, I prayed I could access the Sombrero Tower...and they were answered! The observation tower, and the arcade below it are open, and a ride in the elevator is $4...plus maybe some quarters for the games, as well as for the binocular vision at the top.
The tower stands 300 feet above the town, and offers some nice views of the surrounding area, I-95, and both Carolinas. There is a chainlink fence around the top...as for a time limit for being up there, I'm not sure if there is one, but I was satisfied with the 10 minutes or so I spent.
You may be asked to wait for the elevator attendant (very nice guy); my wait was maybe 5 minutes. We had about 6 people in the cab; a bit crowded but not uncomfortable. Definitely worth a visit!

Really cool to check out. Not modern thats what makes it so neat. My family loves to see different things. This is a really fun stop even when it’s dead. The shops have neat gifts. Taking pictures of the statues was so fun.

We went to go up on the sombrero today to get the full south of the border experience and the lady who took us up in the elevator and helped us take pictures was so sweet and helpful she definitely helped to ease my mind otw up. Y'all need to give that girl a raise! All in all really enjoyed it!

We made an unplanned stop at South of the Border in 2006. Unfortunately, it was late when we rolled in so everything was closed. I don't believe that got in the way of us having a good time though ...

They rent rooms by the hour. Great place. Meet women on line come here for a couple hours in a room. Don't have to pay for the whole night.

I loved the sombrero ride. Tool more pictures with my camera. It’s about 5 dollars to get up there and the view was beautiful.

Great scenic views from above. Glass elevator makes it easier for those of us who don't want to do stairs!!

This is the BEST place to visit on all of I95. I have driven a 1000 miles south and 1000 miles north so many times. And SO is the perfect place to stop about half way. You can stretch your lwgs, do a little shopping, get something to eat, and... most importantly. .. go to the top of the Sombrero. It is almost too much fun for one place. So plan your time accordingly and visit Pedro at SOB.

I've waited for years to finally get on this thing and the early part of this month I finally did. I said with my luck it would be broken 💔 again but I called ahead and lucked out this time. It was worth the $4.00 to finally experience it. Love ❤ to be able to take pictures of the view even if it's through a safety fence ☺.

This place is simply a landmark to anyone who drives i95. Always a must stop, rest stop. Great fun and a good place to stretch your legs while looking at gators, buying fireworks or gifts, or simply using the bathroom or gassing up the car. Perfect location and always well lit at night.

This review is for the top of the sombrero, specifically. It's quite possibly the best view of I-95 and/or farmland on the East Coast! 😂 Seriously though, it's definitely worth the money, and it's something anyone who has ever travelled I-95 should do. It doesn't get any more silly fun than this.

Probably stopped here 50 times and never got up in the sombrero. The reptile house is worth stopping for.

I love South of the Border. It a place of wacky imagination that's truly stuck in time. With the current PC culture that's taking over America, a place like this will never exist again. It's truly an iconic South Carolina eye sore we've all grown to love. I once stopped in at 4am to use their bathrooms only to find a guy in the bathroom handing out paper towels in hopes of getting a tip...

Found this place and did not plan to stop. However, we could not pass up the opportunity to go after seeing all the billboards and the SIZE of this place from the interstate. Honestly, they are one water park away from being Six Flags. So kitschy, a tiny bit offensive, and a really wacky stop. We played at the arcade and took a bunch of photos, so I can't comment on any of the other services, but the bathrooms were clean and easy to find. Worth the stop.

You ever find yourself traveling by Dillon, SC with nothing to do? Then bring it on down to SOUTH OF THE BORDER! They’ve got everything you’d ever dream of in a Mexican-themed truck stop! I’ve never been there myself, but my girlfriend has been there and she says it’s full of epic awesomeness!
