This architectural wonder is a must-see for anyone traveling through the midcoast region. Just a stone’s throw from Bangor, the observatory at the top of the tower of the bridge offers 360° views of the surrounding towns and out into Penobscot Bay. The interpretive signage is professional (and accurate) and the cost to go up is minimal (especially if you’re a veteran: $2.50). The bridge is adjacent to Fort Knox, allowing a combo ticket to be purchased for both venues, if desired. Take some time to have an ice cream from the gift shop and look out at the placid river. Great summertime stop!

You will cross this bridge as we did taking route 3 from Augusta area enroute to Bar Harbor. We actually crossed this bridge for first time about 3 yrs ago. We also went up inside the tower to the observation floor. The bridge is an amazing site and very high off the river below. The construction amazed me as I was in the construction and design field before retirement. The towers are all native granite and the tallest in world that you can actually ride to the top in an elevator. I have gone up in the elevator to the observation deck and the elevator is very smooth riding and quite fast actually to that level. The views from the top are panoramic and amazing. The suspension cables are enormous in size to support this bridge. As you enter the tower, you will see a compass etched in the granite slabs outside the entrance. The craftsmanship of the etchings and the entire bridge structure are amazing! I feel this is a must see to drive across and go up the tower. There is a nominal charge to ride the elevator up the tower. When we went we paid to get into Fort Knox and the bridge tower at the gate to get in.

This is one of the coolest attractions in the midcoast area. Pro tip: go around 430pm and have the place basically to yourself. Definitely pays to ensure you visit when the weather is clear so that you can see far and wide from the observatory.

This bridge connects Verona island to Prospect. This is the only bridge observatory in the US. It has a great view from the bridge. I did not get a chance to make it to the observatory deck. I should try doing it the next time I’m there. This bridge is the longest bridge in Maine. The view from the bridge is amazing. The design of the bridge is great and it’s well maintained.

We drove by this beautiful cable stay bridge on the way to Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park.
The design was modeled after the Washington Monument, which was built with a granite tablet from this area inscribed with Welsh.
It was constructed in 3.5 years starting in 2006, replacing the Old Waldo-Hancock Bridge which in 2003 was found with cables too damaged to repair. The old pier foundations can still be seen in the river.
Photo taken from viewpoint south of the bridge.

Amazing views from the observatory. Quick little ride up to the top. The compass on the floor is very nicely done.

This is an amazing place to visit. You can see the whole bay and valley. If you're scared of heights I wouldn't recommend it. Firt Knox is a neat place to visit too. It is rich in history and the views are good too.

Don't go if it is foggy. But on a day with good visibility you can see Blue Hill and the Penobscot Bay. A good way to get a new perspective.

This is truly a unique bridge which goes over the Penobscot River. Oddly, it is only one way each way. The bridge has two very large towers. The views are pretty awesome. There is a pull over where you can take pictures.

This bridge is fantastic. Ive driven over it many, many times. I remember when it was the structure was first constructed. The bridge was an engineering feat. I haven't gone up in the observatory yet as I hear the views are breathtaking. I will tour it soon as I love the bucksport and coastal Maine area.
