Oak Knoll Pioneer Memorial Park

Note: As of 6/14/23, the map location is incorrect - the map shows the Granada High baseball field, but this is the adjacent public open space located on the hill northwest of the baseball field.

Everyone I know calls this Boot Hill. It is definitely a stretch to call this a “park”, and I don’t think it’s even maintained by the city or LARPD. There’s currently a lot of litter from GHS students along the trail near Wall St. Nevertheless, it’s a valuable open space for the local neighborhood, affording a place to escape the surrounding suburban “sprawl”, get some exercise (the hill will get your heart rate up!), and see some pretty nice views, particularly toward South Livermore and the Sunol Ridge. The main trail goes straight up the hill at a steep climb from Wall St., through a grove of eucalyptus trees at the top, with filtered views down into Arroyo Creek, then loops around along Stanley and Wall. There’s a short connection to Stanley if you want to get on the Arroyo path near the AM/PM station. There’s also a connection to Arroyo Creek near the baseball field, but this is probably only useful when the creek is dry.

This park formerly called Boot Hill by locals and is formerly Oak Knoll Cemetery where prominent leaders of our town were buried, fell into disrepair after the 1930s and the bodies were moved to Roselawn Cemetery in Oakland along with their headstones or given to the families. In the 70s it was a beautifully maintained park with play equipment for kids and lovely lawns at the top which afforded a limitless view of city and hills. Arroyo Creek ran below and began eroding the creekside of the hill, exposing what we heard were caskets and a door to a worker's room below the hilltop facing the Creek. It neighbors Granada High School and many students either enjoyed "The Hill" recreationally or were made to run it repeatedly if you were a football player. It is a shame it has been forgotten and let become an eyesore in a town with multi-million dollar homes and wineries
