Chez Max Restaurant

My favorite French restaurant in Richmond/Charlottesville area. Troy and Brian are wonderful. The escargot and venison are my faves but everything here is delightful and delicious. Can’t recommend anywhere more highly in the area. I always look forward to my next visit.

Every meal we have ever had at Chez Max has always been fantastic! This is a super great place to have a romantic dinner. There is a cozy fireplace, low lighting, and candles. The servers and the owner Brian go above and beyond to make each meal memorable. The restaurant is themed to be a French chalet that has been broken up into intimate rooms.

Absolutely delicious! Paired with a nice glass of wine. Will definitely be back.

We had a lovely early dinner before going to the altria to see Hamilton. The fresh baguette was wonderful. We also tried the Duck a L’orange, the seafood crepes and the special salmon topped with crab and buerre blanc sauce. All delicious. The wait staff was very helpful and the attentive. We definitely see why this is a local favorite!

The food and service are top notch. Don't go here for a new and trendy experience, but for what has defined the term "fine dining". Places like this are rare these days. Our meals and desserts were absolutely perfect. With amazing flavor, and solid presentation. I have seen many a meal ruined in the pursuit of unbelievable presentation. The presentation is honest and noteworthy without taking away from the quality.

It is a great restaurant for many reasons, all of which actually have to do with enjoying a meal.

The staff is focused on your service always being effective, not the quantity of attention you are receiving. The lighting is ample, not too bright, but also bright enough that you get to clearly see the meal prepared for you. Music is tasteful and appropriate, but never a distraction. And the entire place is clean. No corner, picture frame, air vent, or light fixture is caked with dust or debris. It's clear there is continual effort to maintain all the details.

I have to post about the lovely dinner we had last night! The food was excellent as always. Thank you, Brian Moore, for saving my sanity (we have been without power since Monday). Roland was attentive and knowledgeable. Keep up the good work, you guys! Always spot on!

As my experience had been lately, not impressive from the outside but inside we were met with excellent service and an authentic menu. One photo is the Halibut and another Sole. Recommend both!

Brian and the team always do a phenomenal job. We’ve been there many times but last night we tried the bar menu and it was off the charts. The French dip and the burger were amazing so whether you’re fine dining or going in for a light bite This was a fantastic evening! We look forward to doing it again soon

For decades, Chez Max has been our go-to restaurant for special occasions. It is simply awesome.

Bob here - My wife and I were celebrating our 55th wedding anniversary and decided to choose Chez Max as our place to celebrate. What a fantastic choice we made, from arrival to departure. The restaurant itself, the décor, the soft French music in the background, returned us to the days when we traveled in France. We were seated at a table by the fireplace. The cork was popped out of the Champaign, the Champaign poured into our glasses, and we shared a toast. A loaf of warm bread was delivered. When I tasted it, the flavor was unlike any bread I had ever tasted, delicious and unique. I could have made a meal of it, but, fortunately, I didn't. The savory fragrance of our dinners as they placed our plates before us, combined with the presentation, displayed the obvious love and care by the chef in the art of preparing and serving food, surpassed only by the flavors and textures as we ate. The garçon was very friendly, professional, and accommodating. The dessert was perfect! Lite, naturally sweet, not sugary. All aspects of dining here made our celebration perfect. We shall return…

We had not been to Chez Max for a while, but made a reservation last evening for our anniversary...what a wonderful meal. We were reminded of how much we had always enjoyed the setting- busy, yet intimate enough for conversation. Our meals- the veal chop and duck l”orange- were delicious. And we loved the presence of 2 wine menus- bottles and by-the-glass. Our waiter, Ian, was excellent- attentive and professionally friendly, and very knowledgeable. Congratulations to the “new” owner- Chez Max is a gem.

Boss took us for a corporate dinner. Surprisingly comfortable and warm for a fancy french restaurant. Well made cocktail, she crab soup was good but the star of the show was the special. Venison with blueberry reduction. Cooked perfectly to medium rare. I am a carnivore, I have eaten some terrific cuts over the years but this was the most succulent, tender, flavorful piece of red meat I have ever eaten. Venison can be a little gamey and a lot tough with the wrong cut and preparation. This was so good I started trying to figure out where to get some for home grilling. I am seriously going to take my son for this dish. He works a Ruth's Chris and I don't think he has had better.

One of my favorite Richmond restaurants. Great cocktails. Nice wine list. Try the Dover Sole, fileted table side. The mussels are exceptional, as is the tuna tartare. Filet mignon is extremely tender and of very high quality, devoid of fat. Lamb chops are delicious. Whipped butter for the baguette is a nice touch. When you can have cocktails, champagne, appetizers and delicious entrees for around $100 per person, that's pretty special. Especially in Richmond, Virginia. Excellent value. Highly recommended.

Can not wait to go Back. We went to Chez Max to celebrate our anniversary and we were very happy with our decision to dine there. The atmosphere was wonderful and the staff was very attentive without being intrusive. Quite friendly I might add. Now lets get to the meat of this review. Yes, the food was excellent and the cocktails were perfect. We read it was a special occasion restaurant and it is but, it is also on our list of places to dine when you just want to enjoy yourself.
