George Washington's Mount Vernon

Believe me, you have to do this! Great museum and education center, very informative and educational, and fun for the whole family. a little crowded mansion tour but cannot miss it! The ground is large (be prepared to walk A LOT) and pretty. I enjoyed the garden tour. The guide was kind and knowledgeable. They offer so many different kinds of tours, and surprise interactive opportunities throughout. Gift shop is huge with everything you could imagine, food court is fine, plenty of tables and seats. Really cannot think of anything bad. They also hold varieties of events throughout the year, check them out. Since I live not too far away (35-45 mins), I got a membership today. Will go back whenever I can!

While walking through this place I tried to imagine if I had lived in those days. Washington sure knew a thing or two about location. The view and grounds to at this place is so serene, but wear comfy walking shoes. The staff was very friendly and they could answer just about every question. Get there early the boat ride only happens twice, once around 1, the last around 12:30. I’m thinking a week day visit would be more beneficial for your trip. Go check out some history, this is a good place to start.

The grounds are beautifully kept. The associates were wonderfully polite. Even the weather cooperated!

The gift shop was well stocked with quality merchandise as opposed to cheap touristy junk.

It is such a beautiful historical place. The half of the house under renovation right now, but believe it is a lot to see there anyway. Walk around, breathe fresh air, enjoy view, get back in George Washington time. Amazing museum. Also here you can visit his grave and honor the memory of such a great president.

I've been dying to go here for years. I finally got to go and I wasn't disappointed. I love history and have done a lot of reading of our Founding Fathers. It's easy to get around and it's well marked. It's not necessary to have a personal tour but it helps to get some inside info. Don't forget to go by the gift shop. I got a bottle of Washington's original recipe whiskey.

Highly recommended - 3 hours minimum to visit the site and probably a full day if you can spare it..!

The main house tours take you through the entirety of the house as you follow a line of people.

The adjacent museum was very well done and informative - specifically the 4D movie and interactive Washington decision game.

Free public WiFi was available through most of the campus, too.

Very cool place. Several food options here and places to get souvenirs. The grounds are gorgeous and I was in awe looking at some of the huge trees planted over 200 years ago. The pictures don't do it justice. We went on a Friday in late April and it was busy, but I didn't feel overly crowded.

This is a great experience, especially in the spring. Everything looks exactly how it would've in 1798, down to the fake ponytail slinking out of the Revolutionary Army cot! The gardens were especially nice. Somehow, the gardeners at Mount Vernon managed to grow an apple tree in the shape of a fence, and used it as one! There's also an excellent and scenic view of the Potomac from the grounds.

Mount Vernon is a must-see location for all Americans and anyone who appreciates American history. I love how they blend historic preservation with modern story telling.

We happened to go on their annual Revolutionary War weekend, where they did reenactments, shot muskets and cannons, and had vendors selling period-aligned products. The river tour is also a great way to see more.

I highly recommend visiting mount vernon.

This place really teaches you some history in a deep and experiential way. Taking us back to a time when things were far different. Imagine an 11,000 square ft Manson with 21 Rooms and no bathrooms! Nope! They either went to the 3-hole outhouse or used the chamber pots indoors and the chambermaids got to empty them.

This sprawling facility is absolutely beautiful and you could easily see why George Washington loved living here and wanted to be buried here.

The tour doesn’t shy away from his history with slaves that was started with his grandfather. He fed them well and took good care of them. Things have changed for the better the world over because of this wonderful man.

He had huge gardens and plentiful orchards but his main business was fishing Chad on the Potomac.

Be sure watch the introductory video in the auditorium as it explains a lot of what’s going on. Also plan to spend at least 5-8 hours here as it’s worth every minute.

I very much enjoyed the "Hamilton Themed" tour which walked us through the grounds using the book and play as a reference.
You need to get tickets in advance for special tours. We had a limited amount of choices scheduling this the day before we went.

We stopped here on the recommendation by a friend. We were really glad we did. We bought grounds tickets online in advance it said tickets to the house were not available for the day we were going, but once we got there we were able to get some. Plenty of parking, and no wait to get in. Tickets to the house are a timed entry so we toured the grounds first. Beautiful and so serene. Right on the Potomac River. The Tomb is something to see. We made the rounds of pretty much everything. They have you line up for the house entry at your entry time and not before then we had another 20 to 30 minute wait- so for our 1:00 entry we probably actually got in around 1:30. The actual tour of the house is about 20 minutes. But is still worth it.

An absolute favorite for the family! So much history to explore and experience here. You can easily spend all day here, reading up on all the stories about George Washington and those who lived in this estate. I recommend buying tickets before arriving for a chance to walk through the actual house.

Very fun visit with lots of history involved. I learned a lot on my visit. I enjoyed looking at the architecture and also all of the views of the place that make it what it is. I wouldn’t recommend for extremely young kids as it can be boring at points but overall it is a nice experience with lots of learning.

Love history? You must come here! Takes you back in time. Loved the tour of the actual home. The property is huge.

You can buy tickets online and set a tie for the tour or you can buy once you arrived. There was plenty of parking when we visited but I’m sure during warmer months parking is limited. So come early.

We loved it so much we bought the membership. I can come during the week with my son. They have live animals like sheep and bulls.

I saw people walking with their dogs- therefore dog friendly, bring your furry friend.

As a history buff, this was the holy grail. 90% of this site is original to the days of George Washington. There are many artifacts on display that actually belonged to George Washington. To have been able to stand within a few inches of those artifacts really brings a sense of connection to the past.

This is where history comes alive! The whole experience was top notch. There is so much to learn here about George Washington that is not taught in the history books. This goes way beyond Washington crossing the Delaware 😁

Amazing historical attraction on beautiful grounds on the Potomac River. There are many aspects to this place enough to justify a membership if one lived locally. We were here for 4 hours and we had to move fast to see what we did. It would be worth coming back.

Truly one of the best historical sites we have visited. The museum, House, and grounds are magnificent. The house itself is well preserved and each room a masterpiece in period restoration. Many of the furniture and artifacts are original. The gardens are fantastic. Take your time and seen all the areas. I recommend spending at least half a day or more here. Parking is free. There are restaurants, gift shop, local crafters, and plenty of restrooms. Younger kids will enjoy seeing the hosts dressed in costumes of the time. The museums are best from ages 12+ as they are not that interactive and include short films or plaques to read. Bring your walking shoes. The paths are well marked, wide, and easy to walk. Make a reservation in advance for the house tour. No rsvp is needed for the museums , gardens, or grounds. Ample parking for busses and RVs.

Definitely a trip worth taking for anyone interested in early American history. Parking was free and was a short walk from the property. Tickets can be purchased onsite but it's probably easier to buy them online in advance. The property itself is quite large. The highlight for me, and I would assume most people, was the tour of the mansion. A quick trip to Mount Vernon would probably be 2-3 hours, although you could easily spend more time there if you want to see everything. For me, the only drawbacks were that admission was a bit high ($28 per adult ticket) and it was very crowded, as you might expect.
