WOW! We Love this place! Spent five days with the beautiful fall colors! Love the large campsites! The newly renovated bathrooms are great and kept extremely clean! We enjoyed the full moon over the Potomac, as well as a wonderful hike along the General's Trail. We were also fortunate to have a Revolutionary Reenactment on Saturday and a tour of the Smallwood House! There is so much to do in the area...Kayaking the Mallows Bay National Marine Sanctuary and a 27-mile bike ride in Indian Head Rail Trail! As an added bonus, we found shark teeth! We will definitely be back!

Very nice place to go camping for the first time with our kids (2 yo and 3 mo). Loved that the cabins had AC. The bathrooms must have been newly renovated- they were so nice and clean! The General’s store was nice too since we forgot a few things and were able to get cold drinks there too. Wish we had gone on the trails more but that’s life with small kids.

What a beautiful place for family, senior, maternity, or engagement pictures, or just a nice walk down the pier and across the bridge! With the views like that it's great for a picnic or camping as well! There is a cool playground for your kids near the parking lot too.

I was actually trying to get to another park I stumbled upona few weeks ago...but yet was directed to Smallwood... best word to describe it is 'serene'. I am sure it gets much more action on a weekend and smmer time, but for me it was a great break after a long early spring Monday. I was a little timid about walking the trails because I was alone...but they were Soooo tempting. I love the water and it looks to have plenty picnic areas and boat piers. I look forward to coming back one.

This place is beautiful. Old growth trees, interesting landscape, and a sprinkle of history. We love coming here.

A wonderful place to spend the day with family and friends or just unwind by yourself.
Fishing, boating, camping & nature trails. There are playground areas for the kids and covered picnic areas.
General Smallwood, Maryland's fourth Governor, made his home on the Mattawoman Creek that you can visit while you're there.
History & nature abounds at Smallwood state park.

Wow,as seasoned glamours/campers we’ve stayed at a lot state parks throughout the US, experienced the good, bad and ugly.

A stopover at this park for two nights left us amazed at the facilities and amenities provided. The campground just reopened after a major renovation, beautiful, shaded, spacious, leveled sites with fine gravel. Electrical hookup and water, beautiful restrooms and showers. Facilities are better than some hotels we’ve stayed at. The hosts are welcoming and do a great job keeping the campground looking great.

There is a trail within the park about 2 miles and a marina overlooking a lake.

We really enjoyed our time tent camping here. We felt like there was plenty of privacy. The bathhouse was good, but did run out of paper towels two of the days.
The fishing was a real disappointment. There was one pier that didn’t have “no fishing” signs, and it was surround by motorboats coming and going, so there were no fish. I was planning on that being a big part of the trip, but we just enjoyed watching the boats, and the huge playground that we found over by the pier.
There are deer EVERYWHERE. Always fun to see wildlife while camping.
There were crows that woke us up with loud squawks bright and early, and a huge eagle flew right threw our site. We could hear it’s wings flap. Amazing!

Nice Marina. Good parking and bathrooms. General's Walk footpath well marked with white blazes. Have to look hard for trailhead junctions a couple of times across fields and roads. Campground looks good

Great place to take the family for a walk/camping. Couple playgrounds for the kids too. Big park too so it'll take a while.

Nice park, near the water. There are other things you can do, but I only take my kids to the playground.

We have our annual end-of-Summer cookout here. We reserve a space under a Pavillion just in case it rains. The park has boat slips and areas where the children can play. Plenty of parking.

Very helpful park employees and rangers. Great access to the Potomac River, nice general store with most all that you may have forgotten about at home. Lots of parking for vehicles with boat trailers. All in all, a great park to spend the day at. Including trails to walk and even a campground. What is there not to like?

Youth Group campsites were clean and accessible for our Pack Spring Camporee in May. The Generals Walk trail through the woods and a bridge over a shallow inlet with good fishing. There is a boat launch, pier, playground area, picnic tables and large parking lot providing access to the confluence of Mattowoman creek and the Potomac River.
