Fred's General Mercantile

Just a fun place to stop and shop at the top of Beech Mountain. They sell gifts, have a small grocery store area, and absolutely anything else you may imagine you could need from toys to candies to hiking gear to automotive supplies to Christmas ornaments and even firewood. If you visit Beech Mountain make sure you take time to stop in and see all the neat things they have to offer!

We love Fred’s. Have been stopping in there for years. Their tag line is “if we don’t carry it, you don’t need it. Perfect store for a mountain town. You can buy a bottle of French champagne, gluten free bed, floor mats or hiking boots. Definitely worth a stop for any area visitors. I especially love their fall decor. Stopped in today just to ck out their fall decor and ended up buying some items from my grocery list.

Took the family here for breakfast and really enjoyed ourselves. The atmosphere is really laid back and the service was great. The Deli is located downstairs. Watch for the sign saying Fred’s Backside Deli. The walkway down is decorated with lots of memorabilia, so take time to look.
The front porch on the main level has fresh produce and is one entry into the store. Inside, you can find items such as souvenirs, clothing, camping supplies, general groceries, frozen foods such as pizza, and a large selection of wine and spirits. Check out the train whose track is suspended from the ceiling. It will only run for one minute and only after you push the button to start it. The large red button is located on the side of the counter.
Be sure to shop upstairs and you will find a selection of hiking footwear and clothing, Knick knacks, Christmas ornaments, and photographs.

Cute little stop for groceries, souvenirs and everything in between. If Fred doesn’t sell it - you don’t need it!:) Great staff, nice experience browsing the selection of goodies. They also carry beer and wine. Enjoy this little stop while visiting Beech Mountain!

If you are on Beech you have to stop at Fred's! One and only grocery/hardware/clothing and shoes/gifts and decor. It is an interest g place to visit. There is also a restaurant on site open for breakfast and lunch. There is always seasonal decor outside. Creaky wood floors and cobbled together architecture make for a great experience. Plan on having conversation with other patrons and staff as well! The place to get a sled in th wintertime too.

Fred’s is such a quaint General Mercantile, that it feels like a destination in and of itself! I have bought everything from food, toiletries, artwork, shoes, your name.. at Fred’s … he has it! Nice family run store with lots of history! To me, Fred’s is an iconic symbol of the mountain.

so we decided to hike up to Fred’s for breakfast. It was about 30 min hike from where we are staying. Let me say The food was awesome! And the people were so kind and welcoming! I definitely recommend stopping by and getting some delicious food. Also make sure to visit the gift shop. 10/10 definitely recommend

Super cute and really has groceries and hardware! Tough to find parking and if it’s foggy you better watch out. People don’t always watch out. The employees were nice. Someone in our party bought a long sleeved shirt for $25 which I thought was pricy but hey. They had a large selection of weather gear, nails by the pound, old time Candy, bird seed and houses, bacon and eggs, cheese, produce! What an awesome place. They also had sidewalk salt and shovels. The coolest thing is the pipe out front to Mark the feet of snow each year. That was awesome!

My wife and I went here and had excellent hamburgers. The place it's beautiful! It has great outdoor seating! There are flowers and great decorations all over the place. The inside where you can give your order has a diner feel to it. The outer room that isn't quite outside has more of a Cafe or sunroom feel. Then outside there are tables next to flower gardens. It is a very good place to eat. The art on the wall is sometimes hit or miss. They have ice cream and cinnamon rolls 😋 I would give this place 5 Stars! The staff is very kind as well.

This place is amazing!!! If they don’t have it, you will not find it! Fred’s is PACKED, with anything and everything. It’s a trip back to the olden days when mercantile stores were more prominent… a must visit!!!

Everything you could ever want in a general all on one place in Beechwood. I particularly liked the old signage on the walls. Great memories of ads long past

Amazing place!!! You can find everything, I mean everything. The staff is very friendly and super sweet people, the 2 high floors you can buy anything and the basement opens up to the restaurant and the ski shop! The food is great and you can have a Country bigs breakfast for a really fair price. This is a major stop in Beech Mountain for now on!!!

Ni cute place. Going at the begining fall was the perfect time to see the outdoors decorations. Beautiful indeed. And yes they have a little bit of everything necessary for a short visit if you are in an Airbnb like we were.

Great spot to stock up on all of your groceries and any items you forgot to pack for your ski weekend.

Great store for all your grocery needs. There is a nice selection of clothing, and a fantastic deli. They also offer ski rentals.

Looking for a southern breakfast biscuit? Come here! My husband and I loved our biscuits so much we came here twice while we were staying on Beech Mountain. Bacon, egg & cheese biscuit was obviously my favorite. We also tried the breakfast potatoes & grits and they were both delicious as well. Can’t go wrong here! And the general store itself was nice to walk around in too.

Nice place for a breakfast, if you are looking for something more than that, here can be found, from clothes to treats.

The people here are absolutely amazing. Helped us through anything and everything we needed. They also have great food and rental equipment.

Quick easy breakfast. Great service, even when busy. Loved the positive vibes. I'll be back, undoubtedly.
