Oak Mountain State Park

Beautiful State Park plenty of trails we had some nice rain the night before so the falls was rolling. Very nice overlook of the cities seen quite a bit of trash on the trails though which is just sad I wish people would quit throwing trash down.

We visited the park twice in October/2023. First time we hiked the Rattlesnake Ridge and we actually almost stepped in a rattlesnake in the trail. Second time, We did the Lake trail by bike and it was a great experience. That was a few Fall colors. It must be prettier by November.
The park is very well maintained, bathrooms were clean, there are showers and grills around. Great place to spend the day with family and kids too.

This is a beautiful, natural area just south of Birmingham. I was here in the winter and it was a very rainy day. I was still able to stroll around a little bit checking out the Nature Center with protected animals .

I can imagine in the summertime, the park is packed with people hiking, biking and swimming.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Oak Mountain State Park in Birmingham, and it was an unforgettable outdoor experience.

The kings chair trail makes for a moderate hike. Distance is about 7.89 km with a detour @ the Overlook. It took us almost 3 hours. A swim at the lake And a picnic was the best way to conclude a successful day with family.
Good walking/ hiking shoes highly recommend.
The best way to get to the kings chair is to Start Blue trail at North Trailhead take to Kings Chair out and back continue on Blue trail to Red Blue connector. Then Red trail back to trailhead.

Oak Mountain State Park is a fantastic nature spot. Trails for hiking, biking, and picnics galore. Beautiful scenery, a nature lover's dreamland. A perfect escape for outdoor fun and relaxation.

A glorious place to hike. The park is dog friendly, and kid friendly. There was plenty of parking, and the restrooms were very clean. Stay the path and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views like these.

one of the best places to hike, bike, kayak, fish, camp, grill out, or really anything you'd want to do outdoors besides hunt ( they do have an archery range though). heck l, there's even a beach. I've been going here for 20 or so years and counting and It's just a great way to get outside. if you haven't hiked to kings chair it's a must do (see photos)

If you love to go hiking, this is an awesome state park to visit. Although there were some sections of the trail that were steeper to climb, the reward of viewing Peavine Falls was worth it. We also hiked to the King's Chair Outlook which had a beautiful view of the green forest, mountains (in the distance), and a lake below. There were some beautiful views from the mountain ridge and large rock formations(along the Blue Trail). We also enjoyed hiking to Maggie's Glen - a pretty little area with a small bridge over a flowing stream. Another beautiful hike is The Treetop Nature Trail that follows a meandering stream surrounded by greenery. The beginning of this trail has a boardwalk section where rehabilitated birds of prey are contained in outdoor enclosures. The trails are well marked and there are several connecting trails. We packed a lunch, snacks, and plenty of water to enjoy the natural beauty of this park.

Love this place. Amazing the pure Alabama outdoors that's literally surrounded by big highways and towns. Tons of biking and hiking even horse riding!!

This looks lace is amazing. If you like hiking and being in nature than you have to go see these waterfalls. Not going to lie climbing down to the water fall can be dangerous but if you are in good shape you will have no problem getting down to them. If you are not in good shape, be warned it is no easy task!

I've camped here before and had a blast. Today we came just to fish and swim and have a good family day out. Beautiful beach area, rent a boat, fish off shore in multiple locations, big playgrounds for the kids. Great bike trails. And don't forget to stop by and visit the wild life center to see the bald eagle!

I adore Oak Mountain State Park. Lovely beach. Beautiful trails (King's Chair is breathtaking). Fun horseback riding. There is so much to do here. The $5 entry fee is super fair and affordable. I'm a big fan.

Love hammocking at the lookout! The hike to the waterfall is a nice climb up and down but worth it!

A very fun and affordable place to take your family. You pay an entry fee to get to the manmade beach. It's 5 for adults and 2 for kids. They have pavilions you can reserve in advance to cook in. The water is about 5-6ft deep and after that there are barriers to prevent people from swimming further. Very fun place

Beautiful state park. It’s very clean and the park has a lot to see and do including a gorgeous waterfall, bird sanctuary, petting zoo and playground for kids. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit there. Look to spend the whole day here, there’s so much to see and do.

Super happy to see one of the best managed state parks in the country utilizing prescribed fire to help manage healthy forests!!! Excellent mtb trail system, can’t drive thru bham without hitting it!

Military and military dependents get in free. The park is so beautiful as evidenced in the pics. It is not overly crowded. We brought our own kayaks but they have them for rent and you have to have a life jacket. We fished and kayaked on a relatively busy day here. They have so many fun/adventurous things to do that are cheap.

so we finally did the primitive camping at oak mountain.. and it was as amazing as Oak Mountain is every time I go hiking there!.. the camping side is great there are bath houses spaced out everywhere. I did learn that they are fixing to close for renovations on a lot of the camping area and the bathrooms but they were clean the three attendance in the camp office and store were amazingly helpful and had great information for us! This will definitely maybe a regular place for us from now on!.. there's also a couple of different swimming areas for campers a whole lot of activities like zip lining water sports and such
