The Oar House

My husband and I rented the Oar house from December of 2020, through August of 2021. We were moving and needed a place until our house was built. The house was right in the village of Wiscasset so it was great for walking which I love, and the house was comfortable and although small perfect for two people. We slept in the main bedroom, the mattress was so comfortable I asked the owner where she got it and to my surprise she said "matress in a box". I ordered one for the new house and we love it! The kitchen was fully supplied, she even offered her spices for use! The house was warm and comfortable in the winter. This was the December that the pandemic had begun and we were to move out in April, but our house was not finished yet, and we were very fortunate that the woman who rented to us allowed us to stay longer, we had no place to go. She was very gracious and we actually ended up staying until August! We greatly appreciated her working with us to stay longer than agreed upon or we would have been homeless during the pandemic! Yes, it is an older home, but new bathroom downstairs with a nice shower. Laundry right on the first floor. A nice yard to sit in..and close to all the shops and restaurants. Our experience was a very good one. The landlord is a very nice woman, responds promptly when needed. Overall we had a very positive experience.

Very disappointing stay. I have never given anyone a bad review. In fact, I’ve never been disappointed with a stay before. She’s the only truly awful landlady I”ve ever had. The house was dirty when we moved in for a four month stay last winter. Complained we left the place dirty because her cheap, plastic shower curtain needed a bit more cleaning than what we did. We left the place MUCH cleaner than we received it. So much clutter and furniture, you couldn’t move (and it was just the two of us). We actually discouraged family and friends from visiting because the beds were so antique and delicate, you couldn’t sleep a couple in the master bedroom. Guest room bed was the same. She actually withheld part of our deposit for supposedly losing a box of fabric in her cluttered garage which we never touched. Didn’t accept that her son was using it as a storage facility and brought boxes in and out a few times when he moved houses. This obnoxious and truly offensive owner complained we weren’t “real Mainers” because we asked her what she wanted us to do if the power goes out if there is a storm. She suggested lighting a fire in the fireplace which she had told us not to use?????. Circumvented VRBO/AirB&B and wanted payment as a person to person transaction so you have no mediation. Oh and btw, water rushes through dungy, dirt floored basement when it rains or the snow melts. Mold and mildew a bit scary.
