Great school! I attended Irondale from 2004-2008 and I felt that they have a great program. All the teachers were helpful, classes were relevant and went onto to help in college especially with PSEO and AP courses. Irondale isn't a huge athletic school as I felt that the main focus was on academics but bottom line is they are a top notch school in my honest opinion.

No need to send your kids to private schools if you live in the 621 district. In fact you'd be foolish if you did sort of, no need. They have 8 tennis courts, and has great access to 35W and 694. Duluth is just a hop, skip, and a jump and both downtowns are less than 20 minutes with the culture that the suburbs can't provide to our kids.

My son has been in this school district since kindergarten and we have always been pleased with the schools. He is now at Irondale and he loves it.

It's great, for a public high school. The issues are rarely in the staff, and more with the students. The food isn't the greatest, but it's always been a lot better than in other districts, even before Michelle Obama came around. All juniors take the ACT for free, and the school is very focused on getting as many people as possible into post secondary education. B+ for effort, my guys. Despite strange social problems, I have never felt unsafe on school grounds.

P.S. Weed is a major thing there. And it's not always obvious who does it. The highest looking kid could actually be the cleanest kid on the block, and your straight A student could be a massive stoner

If you're on the good side of the school, with the AP classes, and the PSEO opportunities, it's one of the best schools in the state. If you're on the low end of the GPA scale, the teachers turn a blind eye to some of the terrible things that go on in the school. I've had friends who vaped weed oil in the middle of class. I've had friends who did drugs in the hallways after school. It prejudices against everyone equally. Blacks are typically encouraged to take the worse classes, but are given more help when they are seniors. Whites can sometimes even be forced into the better classes, but are expected to just "Figure it out" when they become seniors. I don't know how to explain this school other then, just stay out of trouble.

It has some good programs but it's not as safe as they make it seem. The staff aren't on top of things. Lazy instruction kids get away with everything they have a dress code that's only in forced on certain kids same goes for its weapons policy. Lacking in parent teacher communications

I am a father of two children whom attended Irondale High School, both of them there for the full four years, 9-12 grade. I am so thrilled that my youngest has now graduated, and will never have to return to this school!

Negatives:

My youngest had a lot of trouble with bullying at Irondale, she herself went to go talk to staff members, and many passed the problem off to other staff or completely ignored the issue. Both of my children had issues in Sports at this school, at Irondale the only thing that matters is your last name, not your athletic ability, if the student/athletes parents are friends with the coaches they'll be suiting up for varsity in no time at all! My children also expressed to me that when many students would hint or imply that they participate in risky behaviors like drinking/drugs teachers would turn a blind eye to it, as they did many other issues.

Positives:

My children were able to participate in PSEO, which was really a great opportunity, to earn college credits while still in high school.

I can only speak of my own/ my children's experiences at this school, but if I had a third child to send into high school, I would not put them in Irondale.

Didn't like it but definitely was not the worst. Counselors here are lazy and mean and yes i know they are busy but still, they gotta find time to help each student who reach out to them better. The counselor assigned me a chinese student to help as a guide around the school on my first day just because i was asian. I thought it was pretty racist since she just assumed all asians were the same or that i was chinese which i am not. Some nice people here but overall people were shady and mean unless you're popular like any high school. Courses are ok. Some teachers are good and nice like the math and science teachers but some are also horrible like the german teacher here. At my old school, i enjoyed learning german and i learned a lot of stuff but when i moved to irondale, i stopped learning because the teacher taught so horrible.
