If you’re a history buff this is a must see if your in the area visiting or if you live in the area and have never been. It’s an old military base with a museum and lots of history. Beautiful old houses and church. The museum has lots to offer and you can walk the grounds of the base freely. I will say that they do have some civilians occupying some of the dwellings so please just be mindful. We wouldn’t want to trespass in others property. Fort Monroe is very educational. It is surrounded by a moat and you can walk up the steps outside the museum and visit an actual pet cemetery as you walk on top of the museum and take in spectacular views as the museum itself is actually built into the ground. It doesn’t cost anything but you will have to obtain tickets that you can get at the information center located just steps away from the museum itself.

Incredible place to visit for anyone interested in American history. The staff was helpful and the interpretive ranger was one of the best I have ever met at a national park. I will definitely visit again.

Great museum of American history. This is a free museum. There are a couple of buildings that you can go into. You can also walk the base on a self guided tours. There are maps available.
All of the staff we encountered were friendly and knowledgable and answered any questions that we had. There is also a scavenger hunt that children can do.

Fantastic staff, clean, well curated . So much history to absorb and appreciate. I would suggest if you have a timeframe you know you’re wanting to come booking the time on eventbrite it made everything really easy and I knew I had a guaranteed time slot to plan around. I am from Florida and in school this wasn’t a place my teachers focused a history lesson on but really should have . It’s really history is so immense to the founding of our country and really reminds you of how much effort people in the United States history made to protect it.

Best thing about this place: it’s FREE! Staff are super nice and informative. We went to the museum, but we had to go to the visitor center to get the free tickets. We ended up staying at the visitor center for 30 minutes and then heading back over. Kathy was a volunteer there and was super knowledgeable. We got to see Jeff Davis’ prison cell. Afterward, we walked around the fort on the self guided tour. Highly recommend, especially for the price, ha!

Enjoyed time with the family here. We enjoy learning about history. The museum is the centerpiece of the park! Note: you have to get your ticket (free) from the visitor center first! We made that mistake and had to back track. We didn’t realize! Overall, still found it interesting!

This museum is FREE & filled with amazing history. My 8 year old daughter loved it. We spent about 2 hours there and she kept wanting to see more. Fort Monroe is a must see and visit. I would suggest that afterwards if the weather is right swim outside the fort on the beaches. This is great place for families to spend the day, and pack a picnic.

It's a very nice scenic place to walk around. Great exhibit inside the base too. I spent a whole day walking around here. The top of the base, you can walk here with your dogs. The graves are a pet cemetery. The landscape is taken care of but just be careful of the steep hills.

This was such a cool and interesting experience. We had no idea this place even existed but came across the name when we were searching for things to do on our Williamsburg vacation and I'm SO glad we came across it! It's an eerie place but really fascinating. The town almost seemed ghost like when we went...it was a bit cloudy and passing rain squalls so that probably added to it but it just added to the eerieness of the fort...pretty cool! The Casemate Museum was fascinating and I had no idea Jefferson Davis was imprisoned there or that Edgar Allan Poe served there. We took our 5 and 8 year olds and they were equally fascinated with it. I totally recommend this place and make sure you have time to walk around Hampton, as it's a really interesting place! If you have kids, this place is part of the Junior Ranger Badge program that they can do for free!

It was not open when I visited, but the outside had several historical interpretive signs which told a little bit about what went on here. The main two were about Jefferson Davis, since this is the building where he was imprisoned. One of them is in gratitude of the US Army doctor who attended to him while here. Across the street is Lee’s Headquarters, and since the current Virginia administration loves erasing and contorting history, they had the sign removed that told about it. The walking tour should still mention it, but who knows how long it’ll last. Very cool cannon on the side, be sure to visit while at Ft. Monroe. Cheers.

Way better than we were expecting! First of all it's free, so that's a huge plus. Amazing size, you can do a self guided tour both outside and inside. Very knowledgeable staff answered all of our questions, and there were so many exhibits to see. So much history all in one place between the visitor center and the museum! Gift shop is reasonably priced. Kids loved the musket and cartridge candy (when in Virginia... haha)

This is one of our favorite museums in Hampton roads! This place has so much history, but the casemate museum really showcases and includes stories from it's amazing past! The content for the price is such a good deal, and the staff is so knowledgeable and helpful! We highly recommend this great establishment!

Endless sights to explore at Fort Monroe, former Army Base, now a National Park. If you stop and park at various places inside and outside of the moat, and explore either on foot or bike, you'll see more and more. Be sure to venture on top of the Casemate Museum where you can get a 360-degree birds-eye picturesque view of most of the base.

If you visit Fort Monroe, you must take the time to stop here. It's like a step back in time, all the while you are in the casemate learning about the incredible history of the fort.

On my last visit to Fort Monroe, which is such a fantastic location for biking and walking...the weather turned windy and chill. I could have used the weather as reason to head home but instead chose to go inside the Casemate museum. Don't miss the chance to dwell briefly in another world. Immediately there is a mighty shift in energy between where you were and where you now are: secure, surrounded by massive stonework, imagining what it was like to be part of this time in history.
