If you are environmental governance and policy enthusiasts, this place can be a Mecca give Teedie Roosevelt’s staunching leaning towards environmental conservation. It was excellent please to see a sickly and homeschooled boy leads the country against the crony capitalism and builds foundation for environmental governance. National Parks and natural conservation has a golden history in this place.

I am glad to have pursued career in environmental policies and also democratic schooling (self-learning). It was also fascinating to hear from the park ranger that the homeschooled and always reading and learning ornithologists and conservationists, Teedie wanted to major in Natural History and started taking classes for it but lost interest in it due to hyper lab science focused approach of the field where las he was still a field learner! Also joined Columbia but dropped out of that place too. I find myself always struggling with hyper inbreeding academia the same way.

Learnt about his ideas about progressivism!

Really nice free tour offered by the National Park service. The only way to get up into the house is via a tour otherwise you can pop in and look at the museum off the lobby. The museum talks moreso about Theodore Roosevelt's childhood and doesn't focus much on his adult life. A large portion of the tour talks about the evolution of the house and its demolition. With that being said this home is a replica that was built in the 1920s shortly after Theodore Roosevelt's death by his family. It is really quite the place and our tour guide was very informative. If you have mobility restrictions it is important to note that the tour consists of many stairs and I am unsure of any elevator access being available. There is however a small chair lift in front of the building that would at least allow you to visit the museum portion of the home.

This is a rebuilt replica of Roosevelt's birthplace (rebuilt by his family with original furniture in the rooms so it is pretty accurate!). There's a display area downstairs with cabinets and a video to watch and they also offer guided hours tours as well.
The small visitors center has a gift shop and restrooms available too.
I'd recommend calling as today they were only offering two tours during the day and it is first come, first served! The tour itself is upstairs and shows you five recreated rooms including the children's bedroom and parlor. Our guide was brilliant and it was a fantastic tour that brought so many aspects of Roosevelt and his early years to life.

For those that enjoy US history, I can’t recommend this location enough. To visit the birthplace of such an important and iconic figure is really inspiring and a unique experience for New York.

I suggest signing up for a tour which shows you various parts of the house.

The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about all things Theodore Roosevelt.

If you’re lucky, you can also go into the library room if a curator is available!

I randomly walked past this with a friend and we decided to take a look. We made it in time for the last four of the day. The guide was very knowledgeable and was such a contrast to what I recently saw at the tenement museum. If you like presidential history, history of nyc, or just want a free museum, I would recommend this place.

A hidden gem that’s not talked about in blog posts or YouTube videos about visiting NYC (at least the ones I’ve seen). We got there totally by accident and it turned out we got a guided tour. To make it even better - all of it was free.

Really worth visiting - the guides (rangers) know a lot about T. Roosevelt. Plus, the house itself is a nice museum. You can feel the atmosphere of the 19th century.

Mr Nick the guide gave us an enchanting glimpse to a life well lived - Teddy Roosevelt. A must visit for history buffs. It’s a well maintained brownstone house. Keep an eye out for the collectibles around the house.

I just love to visit any place managed by the National Park Service, and specialty visit the birthplace of the president who created it. The Rangers are always very welcome and knowledgeable. A lot to learn from our beloved Teddy and his family history. Not tickets required. There are 4 free tours per day, 10:30, 11:30, 2:30, and 3:30

Had some time to spare and happened to be a few blocks away. Wish I realized the last tour was at 3:30 to go upstairs but I still got a chance to browse the memorabilia.

Had a great house tour today by the ranger and completed the Jr ranger program to get my badge and pin. Highly recommend this spot for a bit of history.

I have to admit that I am passionate about Theodore Roosevelt. Very interesting tour with knowledgeable guide. Look out for the hour of the tours. Takes about 1 hour to visit.

Didn’t take the guided the tour because after all this is just a replica home Roosevelt never entered (Original Brownstone was Demolished), but the museum was cool, had actual real historical artifacts.

Free admission everyday! Nice museum showcasing the life and times of the first US President born in New York City. There are free guided tours showing the different rooms in the house, explaining their purpose and grandeur. The current building is beautiful but is only a reconstruction of the original one, which was demolished after a new owner took over. The Roosevelt family bought back the place after the President's death. Allot at least an hour when visiting.

Excellent and free museum devoted to Theodore Roosevelt. The setting is a replica of the home he was born in. To see the upper floors (parlor, dining room, bedroom), you must take a free tour.

This is a very small museum but it is educational and well-worth a visit. The Ranger inside was knowledgeable and friendly.

Fantastic place!
This is where he was born and lived between 1858 and 1872.
He was 26th President of the USA.
Theodore Roosevelt was the first President born as a native Newyorker, his face is on Mt.Rushmore, and Roosevelt Island is named after him.
The original house was demolished in 1916, but was rebuilt in 1923 by the Woman’s Roosevelt Memorial Association.
The new house museum was designed by Theodate Pope Riddle, one of America’s earliest female architects.
Rooms have been restored to reflect their appearance between 1865 and 1872 and most of the furnishings are from the original house or were provided by Roosevelt family members.
This house-museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
All other days is open 10am-12pm and 1pm-4pm. There are 4 organized tours if there are enough visitors.
Free admission.
Located in Flatiron District, close to 23rd Street station (R and W trains).

"Speak softly and carry a big stick". While this quote from our 26th president was more related to his views on foreign policy, it is also an accurate representation of his historic birthhouse. While not as well known as other historical landmarks around NYC, it is a key view into one of our most impactful presidents.

On the ground floor of the house, pictures and press clippings trace the history of TR from a little ahsmatic boy into the rugged rough rider and future president of the USA. However the main attraction here is a guided tour throughout the upstairs floors, taking you thru the early years of the Roosevelt family and providing a glimpse into the young life of a future president. Given his birthplace has been deemed a national historical park admission is free, and tours are every half hour on the hour.

I visited the Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site on 4 March 2020 at 3:40 in the afternoon, which seems to have been the perfect time as there were very few people and I had time to look at the items in the gallery before taking the 4 o'clock tour. The gallery includes photographs of TR's life, some of his best quotes, explanations of his family history, as well as artifacts including family drinking ware, the last pen TR used as President, and election memorabilia. The Park Ranger who led the tour was very informative and clearly passionate about the history of TR and could relate him to other historic sites in New York City as well as National Park sites throughout the country. He led us from room to room, giving examples of what kind of events occurred there (such as the founding of the Natural History Museum in the parlor), and discussing how these events would have impacted a young Theodore Roosevelt and influenced his later policies. For a relatively small site, the TR Birthplace has a lot to offer and is a fantastic place to learn about one of the most popular Presidents!
