Sub-base / Dandy Donuts

Sub Base, in the early 90s, was the absolute best sandwich you could get. Fresh baked bread piled high with all the "fixings". It's been a long time since I had the opportunity to re-visit the place (35 years) and I gotta say... DAMN IF They Don't STILL HAVE A GREAT SANDWICH!! The current owners, for the last 14 years, Not only kept the Sammy the best but they added Dandy Donuts. AND THEY ARE KILLER TOO! Hot and fresh just like the sandwiches. Treat yourself and stop by this iconic spot as soon as you can but get there early. The line moves quick but they close at 3. ENJOY!!

The sandwich was pretty good, I got the Italian. The bread was nice and soft and the toppings were limited but the flavor was great
The blueberry cake donut was really good & the sour cream donut was a little more cake like than I’m used to but it still tasted great!

The store is family owned. Their subs are great. I ordered the Italian sub, their bread is fresh. They pack a good amount of meats, cheeses and lettuce. It is great. Their donuts are fresh, light and sooooooooooooo good. I love their sour cream and cream donuts. They are across from Chamblee High School. Great place and good price.

Updated (7/2021): The 5 stars are for the donuts. The subs are fine. Go early so you have a lot of donuts to pick from! They don't take American Express.

My favorite donuts: Butter Milk, Blueberry Cake, Apple Cinnamon (with apple pie-like filling), Sour Cream, Honey Dip, Solid Chocolate.

As far as their subs, they don’t have very many toppings. They have: lettuce, tomato, and onion. They have mayonnaise, mustard, and Italian dressing. They have a variety of meat. I only had turkey, but it was really good. A 7-inch turkey sub is $5.19. Not bad!

I’ll definitely keep going back for the donuts!

Original (11/2020): 4 stars. This review is for takeout only. It’s also just for donuts, not the sandwiches. After seeing reviews though, it looks like we should check out their subs next time! We went at 2:30 pm on a Sunday. They were out of most of their donuts, so we definitely recommend going earlier.

It’s a very unassuming shop. Nothing special on the outside or inside. Plenty of parking.

We got a half dozen donuts. This is what we got, listed in order of my preference:
- Sour Cream - delicious
- Honey Dip - very good, didn’t taste like honey though; reminded me of a Krispy Kreme donut (not a bad thing!)
- Solid Chocolate - also very good, reminded me of an Entenmann’s donut (also not a bad thing!)
- Sugar Raised - decent, kind of plain
- Cinnamon Twist - just okay
- Lemon - didn’t have too much lemon, but I’m not a fan of lemon anyway

For a half dozen donuts, it’s only $5.69 + tax, which is so cheap!!

We’ll be back, and we’ll make sure to come earlier so we have more donuts to choose from. It’s good for the area, but we wouldn’t drive for it.

The donuts are very fresh and taste like carnival funnel cakes. We bought 13! I also asked for a bacon egg and cheese sandwich (which I don’t think they normally make) and the lady made me 4! So very nice. I definitely will be back!

Amazingly delicious donuts!! I drove an hour to get there. Heard about it and I just had to try them, I love donuts! Haha

Delicious donuts!!!! Hand made! Chain donut (like DD) places can’t really compare to this. They only make 50 dozen a day, so it’s not unusual for them to sell out. Sat mornings are particularly challenging it seems.

My family and I love Dandy Donuts! Great family owned shop with fresh donuts at really great prices & a good selection. I haven’t tried their subs yet, but plan to soon!

The donuts here are hands down the best I’ve ever tasted. I’m no connoisseur of donuts, in fact I wouldn’t previously have even considered myself to be a fan of donuts at all, but these changed my mind. I think these are considered cake donuts rather than yeast, but I could be way off. Regardless of what type of donut classification they fall under they are 100% delicious!! I like the chocolate and sour cream best. My least favorite that I’ve tried was the lemon, and that was because the lemon tasted kinda artificial.
I passed by this place a billion times never thinking anything of it, it is definitely a hole-in-the-wall establishment, until I read an article in Atlanta magazine. That’s when I finally decided to give it a try and my donut life changed forever!
Try to get there early for the best selection because the regulars have been known to wipe them out pretty early.
I’ve never tried the subs so I can’t comment on those but now I think I might need to grab a quick donut….

I have been going to Dandy Donuts since moving to Atlanta 18 years ago and being told it was the best donut in town. My friends were correct - the donuts and ham and cheese croissants (when available) are fabulous. And the family that runs the shop always remembers me, as I always bought dozens of donuts for each of my kids sleepovers - always a treat at our home! Great people!

Little shop in a big town. Good donuts, great service, atmosphere could use some updating, but if you like a small town feel, this is the place for you. Sour cream is the best donut.

These are the best cake doughnuts in the entire world. No doubt. So fresh, no need of crazy toppings, and fried to perfection while keeping dense and moist. Why are people getting these at Duncan around the corner when they can have this instead.

A family owned donut shop where I've been buying donuts for over 30 years. The quality & pricing is always the best ever! Across from Chamblee High School. They also do Sub's & snow cones. It's important to support family owned local businesses and they are well worth the support!

These are the best doughnuts in metro Atlanta without a doubt. Places like Sublime and Revolution don't remotely compare in quality and are 3 times the price. Dandys doesn't have any trendy flavors, they keep it simple. But the quality is always consistent, owners are always friendly, and they also have coffee and snacks you can get too. Their apply fritters and sour cream doughnuts are my favorite but they sell out very early so hope you get lucky.

Awesome doughnuts & Fresh! A great reminder to not ever eat a dunkin doughnut again! My father came here when I was a kid and now I remember why! YUMMY ! A light perfect texture and flavor dougnuts! When I am in town I will make this a regular stop! Highly reccomend this place! Thank you Dandy Donuts!
