After years as a customer Markel sent me a letter saying they’d gotten a bad credit report on me so they were drastically raising my rates by over $380 per year. My credit is outstanding and has been so for decades. The letter said I had to contact LexisNexis to correct my credit report and then maybe Markel would refund some of the increase (ever tried to contact LexisNexis, or tried to get them to do anything?). On calling Markel, they told me they sent that letter to everyone and it had nothing to do with my personal credit — said the rate increase was due to the number of claims in my state.

So they lied about the reason for the rate increase and tried to push the blame off onto a massive credit bureau, just to cover their price gouging.

I canceled my policy and demanded a full refund immediately. I went online and got three quotes for replacement insurance, all lower than Markel. My new policy with a major insurer saved me about $500 compared to Markel.

The worst insurance company I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. I went to them for personal training insurance only to run into headache after headache. Stay away from this company!
