My son, brother and I went on the tour of this beautiful Church. The tour guide, “Mr Derrick” (excuse me if I don’t have his name right) was very knowledgeable, friendly and funny. The tour was educational and fun at the same time. I have told all my friends to go visit this church. Please give any donation you are able to because this will go towards the non-profit which will allow these tours and the church to thrive. I don’t want to say what I learned because I want people to go and find out for themselves. I would go back again!
Thank you 😊

Wonderful and rich history shared by Associate Pastor Derrick. He gave a thoughtful and insightful look into the history of the church and the challenges faced. Also was quite interesting to learn of the contributions of each pastor and the periods of time in which they led the institution.
The tour was much more than just the church history and also gave insight into the history of Savannah, abolitionists contribution within the region, and civil rights struggles specific to Georgia. I highly recommend to people of all races.

Roped into chaperoning a school field trip, and the First Aftican Baptist Church was on our itinerary. Oh my gosh! I can not express to you how much of an impact and impression it has made on the kids & adults.

The history is led by the most incredible woman who has dived deep into the understanding of the impact, history, & and future of the First African Baptist Church. The narrative was told for the age group and maturity level, which was perfect. Enough to fully engage the group and leave you inquisitive for more depth of knowledge. I would honestly love to spend days with her asking questions and learning Savannah's history through her storied narratives.

To better understand the history of Savannah, you absolutely must visit!! The First African Baptist Chirch is quite iterally the foundation where Savannah was built brick by brick.

One on the best oral history tours I’ve ever experienced. Our host was so funny and informative and just full of so much knowledge. I highly recommend this tour and be sure to to the host for all her hard work and dedication to the research of the history of the church.

Loved the refreshing and spontaneous tour guide and the way he told the stories. Highly informative and I deeply appreciated the invite to the Xmas eve church service. As a slightly cynical ex church goer I was moved to tears with the generosity and openness of the beautiful people I met there

We enjoyed the history of First African Baptist Church on our tour. I particularly found the info about the underground railroad interesting and worth the admission. Proceeds go towards their work with incarcerated individuals. Tips: pay online to avoid waiting in line, we were concerned the doors were locked when we arrived but just wait out front and they'll be there.

Feb 2023 - The tour was an information presentation by church clergy/members as we sat with about 150 others in the historic sanctuary. Very positive and uplifting reminding us all how we much God has blessed us. The quilt description piqued my curiosity. The downstairs utility room was full of holes in the floor, more historic memorabilia, and had an acacia-wood object. We spent about 2 hours overall and were slow to leave as we chatted with other guests from around the area.

If you’re looking for an informative and unique tour skip the trolly and spend some time in this historic building. Our tour guide Joe was so energetic, interesting, personable, and knowledgeable. One of the best tours I’ve been on.

Yall, real talk. Gabe and I have done a lot of historic tours in our time together. This was maybe the best one ever. Real talk. The brother that did the tour today was possibly the best tour/ history guide that we've ever had. Seriously. We've been to a few cities. We're nerds like that. This young man was engaging. His facts were on point. He didn't talk down to us. He engaged us. He was woke in a way that didn't make the white peeps in our group feel uncomfortable. Sometimes, that's a real concern when you're addressing things like slavery. I wish I remembered his name. I heard him say he was a senior in Africana Studies at University of Georgia. But I missed his name.

We thoroughly enjoyed it. And our 11 year old paid attention the whole entire time. If you're ever in Savannah, catch this tour!!

Nice tour of the oldest black church in the nation. Founded by black freemen and services attended by slaves way back in the 1700s. Part of the Underground Railroad with a 4 foot crawl space (with holds in the floors for ventilation) for slaves looking to be moved to freedom. Fascinating history with a 1 hour tour. Worth the time and price of admission ($10 for adults). Check website for tour times. They even had a really old Apple Macintosh computer as part of their display. So cool!

I can honestly say the tour I had here yesterday with Joe Dobson was among the best tours I had during my week-long stay in Savannah. He was knowledgeable, informative, engaging and funny. And in the subtlest of ways, he preached the gospel of Jesus to his audience at the end of his tour. The history behind the oldest African-American church in the US is well worth the $15 cost of the tour...a must-see in Savannah. 🙂

They changed the hours so no longer a tour at 2pm. We missed the tour because of that, but there’s always another time! So happy there’s historic plagues up with detailing some of the history of both free and enslaved blacks during the 1700s-1800s. Rich black history! It’s worth the stop!

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. My husband and I actually met some people on the tour who are related to his dad! What a small world! This place is a jewel.

My sisters and I toured the church this past Friday while on a Sisters weekend. The associate pastor, Derrek Curry led our group of about 17 on one of the most informative tours I have been on. Derrek made us all feel so comfortable by his sincere kindness and humor. I was amazed at the profound history of this church and its role in the Underground Railroad. If you go, I hope you are blessed by Derrek as your guide.

Wonderful experience. Highly recommend taking the tour. Best tour in Savannah. The assistant pastor was informative and engaging in fun interactive, educational way. I learned so much and so grateful that we were able to fit it in on our last day. Make sure to look up when the tours are scheduled. They do not have them every day. I bought my ticket at the door and was credit card only. You can buy online.
