Across the street from The Charleston Museum, the Joseph Manigault House is a stately manor home restored to its quasi-original status. While a pleasant overall tour, what totally stood out to us, was the in-depth and insightful tour guide who elaborated on a number of anecdotal tales that tie back to the personage of the owners or the history of the city. Unfortunately we did not get her name as it certainly warrants a call out. The tour normally takes about 30 minutes but because we were a smaller group, it ended up being about an hour. Well worth it! If looking to do a number of house tours we purchased The Charleston Heritage Passport which offered over six homes, the Middleton Plantation the Charleston Museum and few other sites. The passport lasts for five days after it's first use so plan accordingly but we found it was well worth it. Enjoy!

A gorgeous piece of architectural history that's been well preserved. Amazing details inside as well as interesting quirks. Impressive representation of excessive wealth of the times.
The staircase is a masterpiece that will leave you in awe and guessing how it was built.
*Guided tours only on the half hour*

Only allows visits as part of a group tour every hour and half hour. Our tour guide was pretty good and really drew us in with his to-the-point presentation. Visit combines perfectly with the must-see Charleston History Museum! The winding stairwell is beautiful. And the architect apparently had no formal training in architecture; must have been the enslaved that made the whole project possible?

Really enjoyed visiting this house. Again, if you are a history person this is a “must see” home. To hear about all the changes this house went though over time and to top it all off it was saved by these two woman who were trying to save pieces of history.

Would really recommend to go with a group of people.

I have never seen a house without a bathroom lol. You will have to see what they used... unbelievable!

We visited The Joseph Manigault House yesterday and it was an absolute gem historically speaking and a 'shout-out' to our tour guide. She was overwhelmingly welcoming and informative about the property.

I worked on the house back in the late 70s has servent hidden pass ways in the walls so you didn't see them leave nor enter a room. Lot of history in that old house. A must see if you're interested in the history of Charleston!

Historical house originally built for a rich planter's family survived many owners and multiple attempts of demolition. The original décor is recreated nicely and the curators collected an impressive set of period-correct furniture and dining table dishes. The guides are very enthusiastic and knowledgeable

I enjoyed the tour quite a bit - our tour guide was outstanding and had a wealth of knowledge to share with us. She knew about every piece inside the house, and was able to give an insight into what the daily lives of the owners. I wished that the original kitchen and stables were still around, but we learned that portion of the property had been sold some time ago.

We loved the G&G Birding exhibition at the Manigault House. The docents pointed out many cool facts and hidden treasures that intrigued our 10 year old grandson. The house and furnishings are exquisite, a must see while visiting Charleston!

We've started our day in Charleston by touring this house and then went to the Charleston museum that has quite a few mentions of it. Very interesting house with lots of antiques from 18th century and lots of history.

A lot of history here! I would recommend a tour. If you're looking for something else to do a plantation tour definitely supplements the history you'll learn here.

Excellent tour led by enthusiastic guide. The house was decorated for Christmas which added to the experience. I would have liked more time to admire each room so will certainly return!

This was a great tour during my visit to Charleston. The Manigault House is next to the Charleston Museum (& owned by it). It had guided tours and you learned a lot about the many owners/uses of the house. It has a smaller cantilevered staircase that is still in use. & on the 2nd floor there is a bow front chest. It was made & signed (hidden) by Boston, an enslaved worker who worked for one of the furniture makers locally.
