Evergreen Cafe

Great neighborhood bar and wonderful well-priced food. Sadly, such places are rarer and rarer these days. If you have something like the Evergreen in your neighborhood, count your blessings. And if you don't, it's worth the trip. You won't find QR code menus that encourage you to stare into your device while you're out "socializing." Instead, you'll find a diversity of friendly faces and all the warmth of human society pressed shoulder to shoulder around the bar.

You'll notice if you read a few of the reviews here, that the only negative reviews are from complainypants whiners who are obsessed with the parking issue. What's so hard about looking or thinking ahead and merging to the left lane? If you think that a legally parked inert vehicle can cause an accident, you really shouldn't be driving.

And now there's a lot of unmerited glee circulating since No Parking signs have been posted this past week along this stretch of Penn Ave. For those of us living here in the neighborhood who need to cross the street to enjoy the park or walk our kids to school, we applaud anything that helps slow traffic on the deadly speedway that has become Penn Ave. Shout out to all the new No Turn or Red signs that have also recently arrived.

Do yourself a favor. Instead of hating on this beloved neighborhood institution, now that the parking out front won't be a "hazard" to distracted sloppy drivers, pop inside and give it a try. Good food, good times.

Absolutely fantastic tacos, and the homemade salsa's were great (be warned the spicy one isn't playing). I had the al pastor, the tinga, and the bistec, all were superb.

I love this place, there is nothing quite like it. Food exceeded my expectations, I love the prices and its a welcoming place. A go-to after events when the night isn't over.

Had passed this place a few times and it had been closed. Was surprised to see it open on Boxing Day.

Was even more surprised by the excellent Mexican food, the best I’d had in PGH and maybe better than most places I’d been in NYC.

The owner Phil was genial and welcomed a regular in and talked as I ate at the bar. Beer was cheap and looked good but I was recovering from a cold so I skipped it.

Given the quality of the other Mexican food I’d eaten in PGH, I’d say going to this place is a no brainer. They do take out and eat in but no Seamless.

The Tinga was tender and flavorful and so was the cotija and house made hot sauce. V fun to discover this hidden gem.

Talk about your local bar. The moment you walk in, you know you are in a place filled with friends. Everyone is welcoming from the moment you walk in. The food is wonderful. I had a burrito, and people I was with had tacos, and the nachos look like a must-have. Nothing was bad. The drinks were served super cold with a smile

Terrific neighborhood pub ... now with delicious burritos, tacos, and nachos! The staff are super chill and the layout of the place almost demands that you strike up a friendly conversation with the people next to you or across from you. Good selection of tap beers and shelf liquors. Always glad to have a chance to stop by The Evergreen.

Edit: all the folks who came here from Reddit to pile on about the parking on Penn Ave, the pub patrons who are legally parking directly beneath the City of Pittsburgh street sign that says they can legally park there during certain hours are not to blame. Instead of trash talking a small business, much less one like this that does a ton to build local community, why not petition the City to address their parking regulations? The parking regulations are what cause the traffic. And it isn't a matter of patrons "parking 15 feet away." Parking spots on Carnegie Pl can be filled up all the way down to the bowling greens. But be careful what you wish for. Once the City takes a look at Penn, they might decide to make it one lane/bike lane each way.

Really enjoy this place. The vibe is cool, though not for everyone… In my view, it’s a great local establishment with superb tacos!

Crazy good tacos! Their hot salsa actually has some heat, so, if you like spicy, get extra. Real corn tortillas and fresh fixings, they hold up the next day, even cold.

I had to edit my review to add that indeed; the tacos, burritos etc. are awesome! A few taco locos or burrito will be more than enough. I've recently been obsessed with the chicken tinga quesadilla! Service is fast and food prepared with care. The location is very convenient. Electric Unicycle and Onewheel charging friendly.
No smoking inside despite the vibe, but a nice garden chooch area where you can watch traffic coast by.

They have the best of the best taco's if you are ever around here definitely try the chicken taco loco OMG I could eat them every single day

A legit five star dive! Thanks to Phil and the workers for slowing traffic and looking out for us pedestrians. 🤙🏼 The food from Taquitos is heavenly!! Drinks are strong and very reasonably priced. The workers are friggin gems! I see black and brown neighbors here all the time. I feel welcome here 💜🧡 Highly recommended for a rest and a chat!
