College Works Painting (CWP) was hired to pressure wash, scrape, sand, prime, paint exterior of my house. Trims were in a good shape and were not to be painted. Pressure wash was disastrous, as CWP damaged main entrance door finish and some widow trim paint. The entrance door was installed in 2014 fall and had a $6,800+ price tag. I am trying to arrange door repair.
CWP did not cover areas not to be painted with protective plastic prior to pressure wash. Prepping was not thorough. Downspouts were not removed from the house prior to pressure wash as so required by the JSA agreement (JSA). When I asked contractor front men to follow JSA and he just ignored it. Only after my several inquiries two out of four downspouts were removed. When painting began, I noticed the paint type was not as required by contract. CWP intern has been alerted and asked to verify whether correct paint was being used for the project. CWP initially confirmed the paint was correct but then admitted the cheaper paint was actually used for house painting. CWP claimed this incident to be and error made by the paint store, however I had hard time believing it. There were areas to be painted with oil based paint according to contract; however CWP painted them with latex. These areas include balcony floor, wooden handrails and a cellar door. Oil based paint cannot be used over latex and, to fix this, latex should be now removed, prepped and redone. I am considering repainting the house.
Front porch was installed in 2014 fall with high end TREX materials. It was not protected in any way prior to painting. One of the painters, when asked to use drop cloth to cover porch, talked back in inappropriate manner and refused, which tells a lot about their work ethic. As a result paint was spilled on TREX porch floor and handrails. CWP also did not use drop cloth while spraying a balcony over the porch, which resulted in tiny paint mist come through floor gaps and settle on TREX porch. There are signs on a porch floor indicating painters attempt to wipe out paint spillage, which made matters even worse as they rubbed paint deeper into TREX pores. This type of damage cannot be cleaned and porch cannot be brought to its original condition by cleaning since TREX cannot be cleaned with chemical agents or treated with abrasive materials. The porch has to be rebuilt to its original state. Front porch TREX project cost was $3,500+.
More on painting crew work ethic. They come early about 7 am and start talking very loud. They would put job related garbage into our recycling bin. They would smoke on the property and dispose cigarette butts into our garbage bin. They would use our driveway for parking, leaving engine oil marks. They would not like to talk or even listen to a customer. They would no show when expected and agreed to with CWP and show up when not expected.
A word on CWP management of the project. CWP intern job management was a complete failure in every step of the way. The CWP intern was often hard to get in touch with. He would not follow my alerts on project implementation. His contractors did not receive and/or listen to those alerts; neither would they listen to alerts coming directly from me. On almost every matter his answer was he needed to check with a manager.
