The Litchfield Historical Society is a true gem. They manage two properties, the Litchfield History Museum at 7 South Street in the center of town, and the Tapping Reeve House and Litchfield Law School at 82 South Street.

Their educational programming is wonderful from themed walking tours to summer camps in The Meadow to programming tailored to school children, they bring history to life and make you feel connected to the people who came before us and shaped the community.

I love the way the law school museum is presented as a "choose your own adventure" style experience. You select a law student and proceed through the museum and learn all about the experiences that student had. You also learn about the Litchfield Female Academy from a time when Litchfield was a "college town." The museums are engaging for kids and adults.

The Meadow behind the law school is a quiet and beautiful place to stroll and the home to the now annual October highlight, the Scarecrows in the Meadow which is. not to be missed.

A must on a visit to Litchfield.

A fine museum of local and Connecticut history. The building itself is of historic interest. Nearby parking is easy, and local refreshments of all sorts are within easy walking distance. Best of all, admission is free. There are exhibits included that are designed for hands-on use by children. Spend an hour or several hours, depending on your interests.

Excellent, beautifully curated exhibits. Learn about the rich history and traditions of this very quaint New England town! We saw the special exhibit on Litchfield's sporting history and really enjoyed it. Staff is friendly and the building itself is beautiful. The permanent collection is small but excellent, with some priceless treasures! Allow about 1 hour to explore the whole museum.

A beautifully curated museum that tells the story of Litchfield and the surrounding hill towns in the Litchfield Hills. A must see to understand the rich history and cultural heritage of the area. The Litchfield History Museum exhibits the evolution of the town of Litchfield, CT from its settlement in 1719 to today. Through changing exhibits, artifacts and archives, as well as hands-on areas, visitors can explore the diverse history of the town. Litchfield was a bustling commercial, political, and educational center and is a case study for the evolution of New England towns following the Revolutionary War. The town’s history includes that of the center village, Bantam, East Litchfield, Milton, Northfield, and pre-1850s Morris.

Very beautiful and holds an amazing archive. Be sure to notice and appreciate the stained glass window lit at night to honor the Litchfield Revolutionary War Patriots!
