The bathroom is always clean and there's always toilet paper. The campground was empty, so we were the only family at that time. We stayed for 2 nights and 3 days. It was quiet and we seen a few deer both evenings. The only downside was the bathroom light wasn't working properly and there was a sign on the trail warning hikers to be aware that there have been attacks between eagles and humans/dogs.
Overall we had a nice and quiet camping trip.

Fantastic camping spot - one of the best in New Mexico for sure. We went during a very rainy weekend and the ground stayed solid despite the downpour. The hiking trails were great and full of interesting species.

Additionally, the forest ranger was quite friendly and helpful.

Red Canyon Campground is the trailhead for the Red Canyon, Spruce Spring and Box Spring trails. There is a no-fee parking lot just in front of the Campground on the right. The restrooms are next to the parking lot. These trails are popular, especially those that connect to the Manzano Crest Trail. Perhaps the most popular option is to hike loop trail routes up to the Crest trail, along the Crest, and then back down. Red Canyon Trail to Manzano Peak is perhaps one of the best kept local hiking and backpacking secrets. A well-maintained trail up to and along the Crest trail to the peak. Beautiful views along the way, lots of shade, cool temps at altitude during the summer, Aspen groves, and superb views from the peak. Heading up Red Canyon, the last water in the summer is at the last Creek crossing about a mile from the trailhead. The Red Canyon trail grade starts low, but it's significant as it reaches the Crest... Averaging 20 percent... Higher near the Crest trail. There is a very small area to pitch tents near the peak, with a much larger area in the meadow at the Ox Canyon Trail junction. Ox Canyon connects with Box Spring Trail a little South of the Campground.

Great campground with good hiking nearby! The family really enjoyed themselves.

No water and no man-made shade structures so plan accordingly.

Perfect place to take the family. There are many seats, and a small place to make a bonfire. There is also many trails, too many to explore in one day, so it's a perfect place to camp at aswell. Overall amazing views, and a very clean and well organized place, definitely recommend if you want to go to the mountains, and enjoy your time there.

First time there and the spot we picked was great perfect amount of sun/shade the fire pits are made to contain your fire allowing for a safe burn. Bathrooms were close by nice and clean.

We love going to Red Canyon because the campground is horse friendly. There are stalls/pens for our horses. The campground is usually quiet, not too much traffic up here. I think the biggest reason is that there is no water for fishing and no hookups for RV's in the horse campground. If you like hiking and avoiding the crowds, this is a nice place to visit.

Don't go on the weekend, during the week it's quiet and calm. Great for hiking or horse riding. Really one of New Mexicos best kept secret. You can hike all the way to the top of the mountains where there are supposedly caves at the top.

Some great hikes to be done out of this trailhead. I would recommend going up Red Canyon and down either Ox Canyon or Spruce Spring; it's great cardio going up, easier on the joints going down gradual. Wonderful scenery.

We go to hike the trails. Spruce Spring trail is moderate, some views, well shaded and in good condition. Mostly through Ponderosa pine forest. One of our favorite trails in this area

This campground was amazing. The only disappointment was the people camping across from me, using a generator EARLY in the morning. No consideration for tent campers.
