A “Belle Island of Petersburg, this lovely island boasts deep history. This marker is located next to the Civic Center and behind the Museum.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a historic district because in the 19th century, Pocohontas Island became a notable freedom colony. The first predominately free black settlement in the state and, by mid-19th century, one of the largest in the nation.
