Fun grocery with excellent sandwich counter and meat deli. I always feel like I've walked into a grocery store in Sonoma or Sebastopol! Great fruit and veggies selection. Also extensive wine and spirits section. The coffee is excellent and its price is the best kept secret in the Bay!

Sandwich shop inside makes delicious fresh delicious sandwiches. The rest of the market has a big selection of high quality drinks, tea, chocolate, produce, and all the basics. Great service, I'm always happy to stop here when I need anything.

Great produce. Good combination of typical, almost old-school items combined with more contemporary foods like a modest offering of Miyoko vegan cheese products. Nice that that there is still a bulk section especially the spice one. Everyone who works there is friendly and helpful.

Fresh vegetables, the best Fuji apples. Well known for its wine selection. Left wall has local bakery bread.

Bulk spices so they are fresh and less expensive than McCormick's.

Separately owned butcher in three back has huge sandwiches but lunch only. Expensive meat. I go to nearby Ver Brugge which even has house made sausages for $5-9/lb.

I love this local grocery store. No lines!Despite its size, it has whatever I need plus things I can't find at major stores such as Safeway or Whole Foods, like certain decaf teas, ginger marmalade, and white rice flower. They also carry all the basics. Their produce is always fresh and they have ripe avocados. The meat counter is another story--very small selection. This store has a long history of good will in its neighorhood, and well deserves to be patronized.

I have been shopping at Star Grocery for years. It is well stocked and maintained and has quality goods, especially produce, all at reasonable prices. There is a wide selection of wines and a nice meat market which also prepares sandwiches to order. I love this store.

Our neighborhood is so lucky to have Star here. And if you like trying a wide variety of craft beers, which we do, you can't beat their selection. Lot's of gourmet items.

Entering Star Grocery is like stepping back in time: a family-run grocery store that really cares about their customers. They feature local produce wherever possible, and stock many hard-to-find, high end food items from around the world.

Great selection for neighborhood market--great produce, meats, dairy, wines and good choice of liquors and beer. You can also get most of your fancy baking goods, oils, vinegars, teas here too!

Star Grocery is the most interesting grocery store in Northern California. And it may be the most interesting retail business west of the Mississippi.

Let me substantiate that claim.

First, it is three businesses under one roof: a produce vendor, a meat market and a grocer.

The produce vendor stocks the best produce in the area. In a town that contains The Berkeley Bowl and The Monterrey Market, both of which offer extensive selections of produce, this is no mean feat. Both organic and non-organic items are for sale. And where it is possible, local and seasonal items are made available. It sounds corny, but it is an perfectly-curated selection of produce.

The meat market mimics the produce department. It too has a strong competitor just blocks away. But because it is compact and its selection is focussed on quality and seasonal tastes, it attracts locals who want the best food in a neighborhood setting.

And it is that quality, the best grocery items in a convenient location, which characterizes Star.

The rest of the store is a collection of, again, groceries that you want: fresh bread from local bakeries, top notch dairy items including a cheese selection that is curated by the same person each day, canned goods, baking goods, delicacies, pasta, breakfast cereal, a fine wine and liquor selection and a superb selection of beer, again, curated by the same person each day.

So far I've described a store that serves the neighborhood well. But there's more Star. Like a coffee service that is simple and delicious. And a table in the front window where you and linger and collect your thoughts. And a crew composed, to a large extent, by the most ambitious young adults from the neighborhood, high-schoolers and college kids home for the summer.

And if all of this we're not enough, there are also two wooden benches on the sidewalk in front of the store and a substantial awning the covers the entire sidewalk. And it is there that children eat ice cream after school, and dogs wait for their owners to shop, and locals put on bake sales and guys like me occasionally sit and watch the parade of people in and out of this marvelous little store.

No, there is no finer grocery store in this world.

So if you want to see what groceries, and perhaps life itself, should be like, get to Star Grocery.

Went for sandwiches but apparently you have to pre order before 1:30 but it's a friendly well stocked family market. Will be going back

Great selection, outstanding service and a real Berkeley Historical Landmsrk. Not to mention Star Meats. A full service butcher with fantastic sandwiches at lunchtime.

Star makes grocery shopping an old fashioned pleasure rather than an engineered assault on the senses. Prices often better than the big chain down the road.

Cool neighborhood market offers a wide variety of foods, beverages, kitchen gadgets, etc. They also carry locally made items like the ReGrained bars made from spent beer brewing waste. No waste there! Eat beer! 😎

Very good selection of high-quality food. I got veggie sausages and decaff PG Tips there, also some interesting premade salads.
