Bartender was friendly and so was the server, food was good and the place is clean. This is a nice place to get a drink and some food. It is worth trying about everything on the menu. It is worth a try. Everything I have had to get was tasty and cooked the way I wanted.

It is a typical, bleak February afternoon and I am glad to enter the warmth of the The Alibi. It is 2:30 in the afternoon and the spacious establishment houses a thin crowd, providing plenty of open seats for me and my good friend Ken. Having just spent 3-1/2 hours in a cramped Volvo, I push a stool aside to get belly-up to the bar, allowing me to work the stiffness out of my joints, as well as providing me the benefit of a closer look at the pretty barmaid tending to our needs. Television screens are strategically placed throughout the lounge, providing ample views of the Penguins-Flyers hockey game. Observing the decor, I realize that my 200 mile journey has landed me in Pittsburgh territory and I quickly put my eastern Pennsylvania sentiments in check - just as well, since the multiple screens eventually assaulted me with a Penguins victory.

A tradition held steadily over the years by Pitt-Johnstown graduates has resulted in my presence here. Although now surrounded by additional buildings and stores, since 1987 the Alibi has remained the meeting place for Ken and his old college buddies, serving as the launch pad for a day of fun that culminates in a Johnstown Chiefs hockey game. As we wait for the rest of our group to arrive, we open a portable humidor with a naive expectation that we could light up cigars, but are dissappointed to learn that smoking is not permitted in The Alibi. As we quench our thirst several times over, we strike up a conversation with Lisa, the barmaid. She seemed to be well net-worked with other local bars and she made some calls to find an establishment that would cater to our vices. She tells us that her friend Marcy's place will put up with our offensive habit. We thank Lisa for her help, then head to the other locale for a smoke and a few more beers. We learn that Marcy's husband is a Chief's player, indicating how entrenched the hockey team is in this community.

After an hour of heavy puffing, we head back to The Alibi to meet the rest of Ken's friends. Our group has now grown to about a dozen guys and we occupy a full side of the bar; as we bark out orders to Lisa, she delivers each drink with a wink and a smile. Not sure if her pleasant demeanor and attentiveness is an effort to gain larger tips, or if she could have a personal interest in me, I throw caution to the wind and invite her to join us at the Chiefs game. At first she hesitates, but then I seem to convince her to call me later to arrange a meeting at the arena. I scratch my number on a krinkly receipt that I found wedged in my pocket and hand it to her. I walk out of The Alibi feeling warm and light-headed, which I attribute as much to the hopes of seeing Lisa again as I do to the many beers I consumed.
A few hours later, we are at the Chiefs game; I keep my phone in my jeans, eagerly anticipating the vibrations that would signal the call I was hoping for. But alas, just as the Chiefs hopes for a win were dashed by an overtime Elmira goal, so were my hopes for a rendezvous with Lisa - the call never came.

This finally brings me to my assessment of The Alibi:

High marks for a sports-themed bar suitable for a large crowd,
High marks for a smoke free environment
High marks for cold beer with warm service,
and finally,
High potential for unrequited love.

I hope to return to The Alibi for two reasons: One - to try their food, and Two - more importantly, to once again try and win the affection of a pretty barmaid named Lisa.

Nice small town bar. Clean and well established crowd, good place to go for a few beers and quick bite to eat. Not a good place to pick up chicks however.

Always great when I visit--- but fair warning, if you are ordering something with mild sauce-- it's super sweet
