The Charles

This is a gem. The food is excellent. I need to mention their Scotch egg. It is as authentic as it gets. Steak Frites were also delicious.

Great service.

Real flower arrangements upstairs - not sure if that was because of a recent event.

Parking is inadequate but it is worth it.

First time there and this place didn't let us down. The outside is so charming, the front entry room show cased this beautiful old staircase. We sat upstairs in a room beautifully painted with giant flowers. There was a fireplace for decoration and plenty of tables. The food was amazing, we ate just the appetizers and they had the most wonderful flavors and everything tasted so fresh and flavorful. We ordered drinks that we saw on IG and even those had the flavors noted on the menu. The Charles is a place to go to again and again. Thank you to our server Amber Leigh. If you are looking for great service, this is the place!

We wanted to stay in town so we picked the Charles for a date night on a Saturday. Got there earlier than our reservation time so went to the bar to start off with drinks. Our drinks were great! I had the sangria (had 2 of them, it was that good). Chirag asked the bartender to make him something off the menu for his second drink, and the guy made something we both liked! I'm not even a whiskey person but I liked it.

We ended up ordering food there too. The bread was delicious! It tasted like they just took it out of the oven. While we were having our apps, the host said they had a table ready for us but we asked to stay at the bar because they were treating us so well at the bar lol!

This was our second visit. The first time we went was when the restaurant was just couple months old. We set upstairs that time. Our waiter was amazing at that time as well. I still remember how he let me try a drink first because I wasn't sure if I would like it.

I will say that the chicken and dumpling entree tasted different than the first time we had it. This time it was a bit too tangy. And I can't remember if there were green beans originally. But the dumplings (gnocchi) and mushrooms were good.

Very friendly group of staff and great atmosphere.

Had a great experience here. It was just before the holidays so it was busy but we waited barside and when 2 spots opened up they moved us right over. Waiter comped our appetizer because they said they were slow but I didn't think it was bad at all. Drinks and food were fantastic.

This was our first time to The Charles. We really enjoyed our meal. We went on a Wednesday night and to our surprise it was busy. We parked at the fire department next door. Ate upstairs, it’s very loud up there… We had the Shrimp and Grits, Caesar salad, Gluten Free bread, Chicken and Dumplings, and the butter cod. Oh and the key lime pie for dessert. Everything was was great and quite flavorful! We usually get Caesar Salad and these were nice and not overly covered in dressing. Can’t wait to go back this summer.

Been multiple times each season and the menu pays respect to whatever is in season, even the dessert menu.
Dishes I highly recommend trying on your first or 15th visit:

- French onion perogis appetizer
- kimchi short ribs
- Boston cod dinner
- every dessert on the menu

Had the absolute best restaurant experience in years the other night. From the warm and friendly staff to the handcrafted cocktail, everything was excellent. But the real reason I’m writing this post was the entree! The paella was so insanely delicious, I’ve been dreaming of it since. Highly recommend for really any occasion, but the vibe in the bar was perfect for date night or to meet up with friends!

9.14.23 My 1st time here, and I loved it. I was lucky enough to find parking right next door. We chose to sit outdoors and it was perfect because our waiter was very fast with the drinks and food. Everything tasted great. I thought the prices were a little high compared to other, similar venues, but it was worth it. The Beast of Bourbon was a fun drink and everyone in our party enjoyed the visit. We'll, be back.

This was a nice find. My husband and I were on our way to Maine for our anniversary and stopped in for a quick bite. We had the quick bite and a few drinks. The food and drinks were delicious, and we met another couple at the bar that had just celebrated their anniversary. The place is beautiful and the staff friendly. I really hope to come back.

Amazing service for a big and wild party, specifically our rehearsal dinner for the wedding. Close to 30 people in the private room upstairs. The wait staff was super nice and patient with our wacky little kids. Food was delicious, as always. We've been here a couple times for regular dinner and always enjoy it immensely.

The Charles is easily the best place for food, drinks, and kind service in Old Wethersfield. I live in town and have visited the Charles multiple times. Staff are so kind. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. My husband and I love this place for both casual and special occasions. Highly recommend for a yummy and unique experience!

Nestled in a historic district, charming area. We went here for an Anniversary, they served us a little champagne! (Very good) The servers knew everything about the drinks, were familiar with the food/flavors, and made stellar recommendations as a result. VERY pleased with taste: I don't like mushrooms, they found a way to make them taste amazing!! portions were appropriate - not too little, but not too much. We got lucky with parking, but I could see it being more challenging as this beautiful restaurant's popularity inevitably grows!

Been there twice. One of the best restaurants in the Hartford area. Amazing, delicious food, lots of options for non alcoholic beverages, great service. It's not cheap but absolutely worth it for a special occasion or a date night. Will definitely come back again.

This was my first dining experience at The Charles. We were seated upstairs where the atmosphere felt warm cozy and inviting. Our server Brianna was very busy with a full section. As busy as she was, Brianna was on point! She had a welcoming personality and was very attentive without being overbearing. The food we ordered was fantastic! The portions were perfect! Prices are appropriate and reasonable! What a wonderful dining experience at The Charles!

We came here for a belated Valentine's day. Everything on the menu looked amazing, we ordered more than we could eat! I highly recommend the brussel sprouts, the steak fries was also great. The drinks are delicious too. We had to skip dessert because we were too full!

Such a unique experience. Set in a house that feels classy but homely at the same time. An original menu with lots of options and creativity. I got the sake cocktail to start. We ordered the unique twist on a french onion soup with pierogies in it, which was fantastic. For our meals my wife got the Chicken & Dumplings (excellent) and I ordered the Vert Risotto with pork belly (scrumptious but needed the salty pork). My 2-year old daughter got the salmon kids meals, which was so big and only cost $6. They even brought out an ice cream with a candle for free since it was her birthday. Add in great service and it was an easy 5 ⭐. Highly recommended and eager to return!

Such a warm, inviting and historic place. The food is excellent too. There's nothing not to love about The Charles and we'll define back to taste everything on the menu. Don't forget to visit the cozy fireplace upstairs. We were also visited by a little squirrel who told us he hid his acorns in some mysterious places. That's just nuts!

My mom picked The Charles to celebrate Mother’s Day after hearing glowing reviews from others, and we were so glad that we did! The vintage feel of the restaurant was right up my mom’s alley, and it was impressive to see the beautiful condition of this antique home. The prix fixe menu for the holiday had a great selection, including the deviled egg appetizer, prime rib, and filet mignon. The meat was cooked to perfection, and I especially loved the sauce that was paired with the filet! They clearly have a very talented chef. Desserts of the carrot cake, affogato, and creme brûlée were all great too. Though we thought the waiter could’ve been friendlier (not even a Happy Mother’s Day to my mom), we did appreciate that the table was cleaned between courses and that each course moved steadily. We plan on visiting again to try their non-holiday menu!
