The Shepard and the Knucklehead Pub Reviews

Excellent place that carry many brews from a variety of microbreweries in and around New Jersey. Ambience is beautiful. What's also awesome about this place: they serve a great selection of food items! Wings, burgers, wraps, salads, down to NY strip and Porterhouse steaks. I had a strip with smashed potatoes and salsa/chips after a delicious buffalo wings app. This place also carries a good selection of spirits including top shelf whiskies that even attracts Ron Burgundy as a regular. We sealed the delightful evening with a couple of JW Blue Labels.

Note: a reviewer said this place was expensive. The average price for craft beers were about $7. That is a completely agreeable price that is quite common in any craftbeer spot. Reasonable food prices for all that only steepens in steak areas. The ambience, the courteous service, the delicious food cooked to your specifications, the crisp craft beers that seems to play a live orchestra in your mouth as you imbibe - are all part of the unified experience that is priceless.

Stop steak sandwich on garlic bread is AWESOME. I like it with mozzarella and blue. Wonderful fries with skin. Always cooked perfectly. Poutine is also great here.

We love this pub! Always an interesting list of craft beers on tap, and they will let you sample one or two. Staff is extremely friendly, polite and knowledgeable about the beers and other spirits available. Food is very good, and they have the best lobster bisque in the area!

It has a better beer selection than any other beer place I have been to. Even huge places in the city can't compare to the 90 beers on tap at the Shep. They have every kind of beer you could want and most of them are local. The food is incredible and they have great weekday food specials. The breakfast burger is amazing on the pretzel bun. The people there are so friendly. There is a great mix of people from families to college kids to business guys to people on dates. Everyone feels welcome at the Shep.

Great selection of craft beers on tap and reasonable prices. I absolutely love their Mac and cheese- it is incredibly creamy. Their wings are delicious too and the buffalo ones are topped with fresh parmesan. It's very cozy and a nice environment to hang out with a few friends.

Excellent beer selection. Decent food. Clean, interesting space. Even if you're not into craft beer, it's worth stopping here for after work drinks. If you're into craft beer, this is the place for you. This place is a great suburban haven for beer aficionados.

I Love this place!! The beer selection is unsurpassed in the NYC area. 90 crafts beers on tap!! NO mass produced "water with a head" beers here. Their menu keeps getting better. They recently switched to all homemade products and the chef is producing some very interesting and delicious items. The burgers are great, as are the Asian style wings. The pulled pork is tender and loaded with flavor. The nachos are a great choice as a starter. Chris, the owner, is great. Joe, his son, knows his beers. Ask for them when you visit. Caesar, the head server always has a smile and is very helpful. The Shepard.and the Knucklehead should be near the top of your list to visit in the near future, especially if you are looking to try out some great beers.

Cozy type tavern. Bacon Mac n' Cheese was really good as was the Lobster bisque. The chicken spring rolls were a little greasy but had a nice little kick to them. Food service was fast. Tons of beer to choose from. Waitress was very helpful and sweet. Accept cards and cash. Bar seating and regular seating. Restrooms in the back.

I give this place 5 stars for what it is: quite possibly the best beer bar in NJ and beyond. Their whisky selection does not match other places, though they do have some very good selections in that category as well. Their food service can be rather slow. If you order the 12 wings figuring it'll be a full meal for you, don't. They taste good, but are puny. The food is not bad though, but you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere. My suggestion is to go here for drinks, particularly if you like beer, and maybe some food to munch on. This is beer heaven, and the service is not only friendly and attentive, but knowledgeable about their formidable menu of beer. Tell them what you like, ask them for a suggestion based on that, and they will not disappoint you. So far as beer goes, this is not only the best bar in town and in the general area, it's at least one of the best in the state, probably in the region and even in the country as a whole. Go and enjoy. Nice decor, good service, and amazing selection of beers. Go and enjoy!

The Star Ledger gave them the title as the best Craft Beer Bar in NJ and I certainly believe they can take the reigns. Cloverleaf Tavern is certainly a great alternative, but I feel the Shepherd & the Knucklehead had a better selection. Here, they had just about 90 beer taps all neatly broken down into the types of beer they are. So many options for across the state plus beers across the country. It is really hard to sit down and just pick a few beers that you want because all the sought after beers are available here.

I cannot comment on the lunch/dinner options as I only had an appetizer, but I can say they had the best Bavarian pretzel that I have ever had. Extremely soft, good portion, and delicious beer cheese to go with it.

Overall, the pub area is not very large. Just about 12 chairs along the bar and 4 booths, but it does expand into a bigger area where the restaurant is.

I will certainly be coming back here.

We ate here for the first time today. They have beer on tap, lots of it and no bottles. The food is also really really good. I got a veggie burger it was yummy. My bf had the steak and said it was delicious. We will definitely be back.

I arrived at opening time at 12pm. So I had great service because it was just me and a friend and cant say what the evenings are like. However, The menu looked amazing, as I order the german pretzel which had good sauces on the side as well as a great Angus Fajita! I will def. go back and you should check it out. I think other stuff there has to be amazing. So check it out!

This is the top beer bar in New Jersey but a plus for this place is that the food is also awesome great service nice people owner is a Class Act and it's clean. Only disadvantage is there aren't a whole lot of tables and it can get quite noisy but it's worth the trip for sure.

Great beer selection and customer service. The vibe is always vibrant and full of interesting people. More of the college crew mixed with the local crowd. I got Spring Vegetable soup last time I was there and it was really good.

The Owner is great, you always get a warm hello with a smile from him. If you're sitting at either one of thier 2 Bar's or at a table the Shepherd & the Knucklehead is so relaxing. So many styles and types of Beer 🍺 to choose from. The Bartender is awesome, She is always so nice and smiling and if your not sure what Beer you want she can guide you from Porter's to Stout's to IPA's or Others and will be more than happy to get you a sample before you commit. Food is awesome and always prepared perfectly. Make sure you check the specials.... Don't let this place slip out of your sites, go take a visit..... Enjoy....
