One of the stop of the tour train. Take this little red train hop on hop off to watch around the old town, joyful to be bumped up and down all the way.
The highlight in the town is to visit the ancient underground mine. Different from the salt mines in Poland and Austria, due to the volcanic eruption, the metal mines here are rich in gold, silver and copper, and are narrow, dark and humid. There are running water on both sides of the trail, and sleeping upside-down bats can be seen in the cave, close at hand.
There are 14 levels in total, the top two levels are open for visitors, 50 meters deep, 8-9 degrees Celsius, equipped with helmet searchlights, and the whole journey takes 90-100 minutes to walk.

The museum of Slovak mining was was absolutely amazing and it is definitely a must see in this area. The tour took about 90 minutes and most of it took place in the mine itself. The tour guide was very nice and after such a short time you will get a feeling what it means to be a miner.

We had an excellent Tour with barbara who led us through the tunnels and explained everything in Perfect English, although not being the „english-speaking guide“ (why not though?)
Highly recommend!

An amazing experience. Highly recommend. You can also book English/German guide but it needs to be arranged in advance.

A very interesting museum. A guide to the underground levels of the mines. A number of floors. Wet and warm. The guide is talking in Slova only. Tours every 2 hours. There were 3 tours a day.

We really enjoyed our underground tour. We recently visited the very touristic salt mine near Krakow - while that was pretty, this museum provides much more insight into life as a miner and the development of mining techniques. It was really cool to walk through the cold, narrow tunnels. Its amazing what they achieved with such limited technology. We emailed the museum to book a time in advance and the museum arranged an English speaking guide (€15 extra for the group). The guide provided a good level of information and also some funny stories. The information boards on the surface are fantastic, but may be too detailed for some (they reminded me of my university geography textbooks).

Old disused gold mine that's been turned into a tourist attraction/educational experience. Good to visit and go on the tour down the mine. We joined a Slovak tour due to the time of day but the guide was really nice to us and tried to tell us about the workings of the mine in English between the bits in Slovakian. Worth a visit if in the area.

Great experience with lovely tour guide. Lots of historical details about gold mining and hard life in this part of Slovakia. Whole region (Banská Štiavnica) is beautiful and doesn't matter if you prefer history or nature, you will find enough of everything.

Well worth a visit. The guided tour of the mine takes about 1.5 hours. It is conducted in Slovak but there is enough English signs to make sense of it. You are issued with a rain coat, hard hat and torch. The tour involved walking through the tunnels and viewing the changing in mining techniques over the years. Adult entry is EUR 8 (seniors EUR 4) in July 2019. Parking is EUR 2.
Kids will enjoy with bit of mining equipment to explore.
There is a small shop selling mining items. Toilets are ok.

This place is really nice, it shows how the mining industry was evolving , u are given helmet cloak and flashlight and you go deep down to mines, just like workers did years ago, they tell you something about history , about techniques of mining, u see the accessories miners are using now and were using in the past , if u are lucky u will see famous miner's full moon which u Can find only here
