Regional Fonte Nova

We spotted this restaurant on our walk around this quaint village, Armamar, the capitol of the tastiest apples that we have every had. We had dinner here on last night and this was the best decision we had. The host, Eladio was warm and welcoming. The menu is meat heavy but has side options. Meats were cooked beautifully. The buffet appetiser was generous and the olive oil which comes from their farm was delicious. Their apple pudding topped of with caramel port wine was the perfect finish. We chatted with Eladio who was really passionate about his town. 90% of the produce came from within the township he says. It is all about supporting each other. This meal we had here was way better than the expensive restaurants down in Régua (next to the station- they were pretentious and expensive)

So when visiting Regua, take the bus heading to Armamar and stop at the hospital and you find restaurant easily pass the church.

Forget the fancy chef restaurants around, this place was welcoming, warm and incredibly delicious! Simple and local food but at it’s best!
The hosts are sweet and the service was excellent.
They serve some good appetizers and port that are included the price of the main dish. Large portions dishes and a very big selection of wine.

What an amazing restaurant! The food was so fresh, so delicious, so authentic - we absolutely loved it. Our favorites were the black sausage, the beans, the roasted veggies and of course the meats. The apple mouse and the chocolate mouse were so delicious. And the local port wine was the perfect way to cap our meal. The service was truly nice! We felt very welcomed!

It is an unassuming family run restaurant. Food is fantastic, the local pork dish with chestnut and apple is wonderful. There’s set menu you can order for like 24 euros. Comes with free flow of soup, sausage and self service Parma Ham. Not to mention, the amazing view. And top notch service. Highly recommend.

This has been the best and most welcoming place I've been in Portugal. Everywhere and everyone have been great, but here you feel double the greatness:)
The dinner, with the spectacular view, has been the most relaxing experience I had for a meal. Everything is local, even the house wine, and the quality, tastes, and presentation of food is 10 out of 10.
Finally, and the most important part of my review is the owener, Eladio, who is so welcoming, respectful, and wonderful (20 out of 10). He even picked fruits for us from their garden right from the window.

YES! YES! YES! We traveled with "Porto Transfers and Tours" to the Douro Valley for wine tastings. But first, we found this fantastic lunch spot where all they speak is Portuguese and had the daily menu decided for us. Excellent cultural experience, friendly owners and amazing food. 5/5 and hope to come back one day!

Oh My God the veal steak.
We are so lucky to have found this place, probably one of the best dinners we've had in Portugal. Simply surrender yourself to the waiter and let them treat you to their best food.
We were so busy admiring the food that we almost didn't take any photos..
The view and the drive up is breathtaking.

I wish I could give a star rating higher than 5. This by far is the best experience I've ever had at ANY restaurant. The owner, Eladio, was so welcoming and warm, and we had such a great time chatting with him. There is a buffet appetizer that is already included in the price of the meals. The house wine was amazing, and the food too. words cannot describe how great this restaurant is. Forget about all the restaurant in Pinhao and just go here. You'll also get to enjoy the wonderful drive to Armamar. As if the food was not great enough, Eladio surprised us with amazing port wine, and fruits he picked right from the garden! Thank you for being so passionate about your job! Can't wait to come back!

Had a wonderful time at this restaurant. The drive up was beautiful, but the food and wine were really amazing and what we've been thinking about since last night! We ordered 20€ meals that came with appetizers and wow, did not disappoint! Outstanding - our waiter bright us FOUR appetizers that were so good, hard to leave room for the main course. Had the Porco bizarro (had chestnuts and baked apple) as well as a veal dish, both were outstanding. Highly recommend!

Exceptional! If you’re in Armamar don’t miss this place. Their food is authentic and the service is excellent!! I came here two nights in a row and really enjoyed my food experience.

We just finished our meal and it’s one of the best we’ve had in Portugal! From the appetizer to the main entree, to the dessert, it was all so good! Muito Bom! Also the views are great, it’s raining right now, and the restaurant feels so cozy. Such a great way to end our stay in the Duoro. Would def recommend! We had the pork with chestnuts and apples - YUM! And the crema for dessert! Absolutely the best :) Did I mention the service was amazing? 5 stars all around! Go for it, you won’t regret!

We had an amazing evening at Fonte Nova. The owner promptly greeted us with port wine and a beautiful table by the window. First came the bread and olive oil... next the apple fritters... followed by a homemade Portuguese soup... prosciutto and sausage. Finally the proprietor brought out our main meal which was a specialty of the house. We were highly impressed by the quality of our meal and with the service. If you want traditional Portuguese food for a good value look no further than Fonte Nova.

Recommended by our nearby appartment, Fonte Nova delivered. The concept is interesting: starters as a buffet of locally sourced typical regional bites, followed by a main course of your choice (10 options). The host is very friendly and funnily enough encourages you to keep eating from the buffet. Our main courses (salmon and veal/pork-mix) were very nice. The meat was a quite salty (which I like) so if you're not into that, you might want to give some instructions. Oh and the view of the surrounding area from our table was amazing 😍

Gorgeous place on top of the Douro Valley. We ate really well, very typical food, mostly meat based, incredibly generous portions, and very flavoursome too! Please go there on an empty stomach and prepare to be amazed and very well taken care of.

I've been meaning to write a review since our family of 4 visited in November. This was by far the best culinary experience we had in the Douro Valley. Impeccable service, and every dish we ordered was unique and hit the mark. Even the very traditional dishes on the menu have some flair and unexpected little flavor combination. Really special place. Don't miss it. The prices are stunningly reasonable too!!

Delicious local food!
After reading the reviews, this was an obvious choice for dinner. The food was amazing - we started with presunto (raw ham), rustic bread, apple fritters with port, olive oil and hearty bean stew followed by the Bisaro pork with apple, chestnuts, cabbage and potato. We enjoyed every mouthful!!

3 hours well spent! First of all, the place has a great view which alone makes it worth the visit. Then there are great starters - the bean soup is very tasty. Great olives too. As for the food, we tried 2 types of pork, lamb ribs, some small goat as well as cod. The fish was nice. Meat was decent, but didn’t take our breaths away. The service made it a 5-star experience though. We got recommendations, jokes and very pleasant service in general. That made us order 3 deserts, 2 types of ice cream and some coffee. We also got some porto and local apple brandy (similar to grappa) and we loved them both. In the end we bought 3 bottles of recommended wines, including one from Quinta Nova, which is a very respected Douro producer. We haven’t tried them yet, but I’m sure all 3 will be great. I always loved visiting local restaurants which are not tourist oriented. This is a perfect example. I wish them all the best and long years of successful business ahead.
